Typical Section Closure Dike A

 Deep Mixing Soil Improvement (DMSI) is used to

strengthen the soft foundation

 Work must be done when the Reservoir Level is Low

DMSI – Soil Improvement to Support Dike
Soil Improvement Options

 Replacement is one of the simplest. Replace soft /

organic soils with good soil or Engineered soils (e.g. soil
cement) But limited in depth.

 Densification of loose soils or potentially liquefiable soils

is common by heavy tamping or vibration techniques. But
is usually noisy and can impact nearby structures

 Consolidation/Dewatering. Preloading embankment fill

is well proven, including control rate of embankment.
Acceleration of consolidation can use vertical sand drains

 Grouting is pumping material to set or gel in pre-existing

openings or by displacement grouting. But for large area
will be irregular or inhomogeneous.

 Admixture Stabilization includes Deep Mixing Soil

Improvement (DMSI) is used to strengthen the soft
foundation

DMSI Improvement Ratio (IR)

Improvement Ratio = Area DMSI Twin Column / Area Covered by a

Single DMSI Twin Column
IR = 1.49/ 4.59 = 32%

Twin Column of DMSI

Area of Twin Column Area Covered by a DMSI Twin Column =

of DMSI = 1.49 m2 2.7m x 1.7 m = 4.59 m2
DMSI Improvement Ratio (IR) Impact on
Soil Properties (Cohesion for Stability)
Cohesion for Soil mass with DMSI under Embankment

Cu = quck/2 x IR

Where: Cu = Cohesion
quck = Design Compressive strength of DMSI Column
= 1/3 of Compressive Strength Trial Mix = 700 kN/m2

E.G. for IR 32% Cohesion Cu is 700/2 X 0.32 = 112 kN/m2
