1. A school district offers hockey and basketball. The result of a survey of 300 students
showed: 120 students play hockey only, 90 students play basketball only, 30 students do
not participate in either sport. Of those surveyed, how many students play both hockey
and basketball?

2. In a class of 450 students, 300 are taking a mathematics course and 260 are
taking a science course. If 140 of these students are taking both courses, how
many students are not taking either of these courses?

3. In a class of 50 students, 18 take music, 26 take art, and 2 take both art and music.
How many students in the class are not enrolled in either music or art?

4. (a) E = {x : x is an integer and 2 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 12 }
M = {x : x is a multiple of 3}
P = {x : x is a prime number}
(i) 𝒂 ∈ 𝑴 ∩ 𝑷
Find a.

Answer ............................... [1]

(ii) Find (𝑀 ∪ 𝑃)′ .

Answer ............................... [1]

(b) In a survey, 90 people were asked “Do you own a car?” and “Do you own a bicycle?”. A total of 27
people said they owned a bicycle. Of these, 13 owned only a bicycle. 11 people owned neither a car nor a
bicycle. By drawing a Venn diagram, or otherwise, find how many people said that they owned a car

Answer ............................... [2]

(a) The Venn diagrams show a Universal set, E, and subsets A, B and C.

(i) Shade the set (𝐴𝑈𝐶)′ ∩ 𝐵. [1]

(ii) Express in set notation the subset shaded in this diagram.

5. In a survey, 60 students are asked which of the subjects Biology (B), History (H ) and
Spanish (S) they are studying. The Venn diagram shows the results. 27 students study History.

(a) Find the values of p and q.

Answer p = ...................................q = .............................. [2]

(b) Find n(H ʹ).

Answer ..................................... [1]

(c) Find n((B ∪ H ) ∩ S ʹ).

Answer ..................................... [1]

6. (a) In a group of language students, 24 studied Spanish, 23 studied French and 15 studied
German, 12 studied Spanish and French, 10 studied German and French, 6 studied
Spanish and German, 4 studied all three languages. By drawing a Venn diagram, or
otherwise, calculate the number of students who Studied
(i) both Spanish and French, but not German,
(ii) only one language.

Answer (a)(i) .......................................... [1](ii) .......................................... [1]

(b) The set A consists of the points whose coordinates (x,y) are given by
𝐴 = {(𝑥, 𝑦): 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1}
The points in set Bare given by B#{(0, 0), (0, 1), (1, 2), (2, 5), (3, 6)}. Find
(i) 𝑛(𝐵) (ii) 𝐴∩𝐵

Answer (b)(i) n(B) = …………………[1](ii){…………………….} [1]

7.

56 people went on holiday to Madeira. All 56 people had the opportunity to go on a boat trip, a
coach trip and a helicopter trip.
32 went on the coach trip. 30 went on the boat trip. 10 went on the helicopter trip. 12
went on the boat trip and the coach trip but not the helicopter trip. 4 went on the boat trip
and the helicopter trip but not the coach trip. 2 went on the coach trip and the helicopter
trip boat not the boat trip.8 did not to go on any of the trips.
Let 𝑥 be the number of people who went on all three trips. Let B, C and H be the sets of those
people who went on the boat trip (B), the coach trip (C) and the helicopter trip (H).
(a) Complete Figure by writing, in term of 𝑥 where necessary, the number of people in each
region of the Venn diagram. [4]
(b) Hence find the value 𝑥. [2]
(c) Write down the value of
(i) 𝑛(𝐵𝑈𝐶),
(ii) 𝑛((𝐵𝑈𝐶) ∩ 𝐻),
(iii) 𝑛((𝐵𝑈𝐶𝑈𝐻)′ ), [3]

Answer (a)

(b) = {x: x is an integer and1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 8 }.

P= {x: x> 5}. Q= {x:𝑥 ≤ 5 }.
(i) Find the value of n(P U Q).
