Professional Semester 3 – St.

Mary’s Catholic School Taber

Brendan Kearl – P.E 7, 8 and 10
September 5 – December 21th

Grades: 7, 8 and 10 A/B Unit: # 1 Outdoor Sports Dates: September 5th – September 21th (10 classes, 45 mins)

Introduction and Explanation:

This unit combines the use of good weather with outdoor activities and provides a variety of well know sports to help integrate
the students and to my teaching style. My teaching philosophy includes allowing student to try and practice a wide range of sports and
games that can help with all the curriculum outcomes. This is why I spend only three days with soccer and two days will ultimate
Frisbee, rugby and flag football. By doing so student do not get complacent with a certain sport but continue developing all aspects of
sport and maybe be introduce to a new sport that they will fall in love with and continue playing for the rest of their lives. I have also
synced up my teaching of the first two units (Outdoor sports and volleyball) with all three grades I will be teaching, grade 7,8 and 10.
This way I will be more easily focus on getting to know students and their weaknesses and strengths rather than focusing what and
how I am going to teach the material. After the first two units I will break the grade 7 and 8 into one schedule and the grade 10s into a
different schedules.
In all my units this year I will try and fit in at least one general learning outcome (A,B,C or D) from the Alberta curriculum to
again provide a variety of topics throughout the unit. I also tried to focus on SLOs that would help the students build a good
foundation and understanding for PE class for the rest of the semester/year. SLO A -1 will be covered by focusing on running, cutting
or shuffling to get open in the variety of sports. Getting open also helps with understanding spacing and the relationships with
teammates and the object of the game. This outcome will be formatively assessed by Plickers self assessment question on there
personal skill level. Outcomes B -6 will be covered from multiple conversations in class about the benefits of PA and that not matter
your body size or shape PA is good for you. This will be formatively assessed through a self-assessed Plickers question. C -1 and 3
will be identified by having student work and communicate and play fair with teammates and opponents because in this unit they will
always be on a team with not always their friends. This will be summative assessment by a peer assessment through a Plicker
question. D -1 will be covered through fitness testing at the end of this unit and through a formative question of if they are involved
with any activities outside of school. If they are not involved with an activity I will invite them to the cross-country team I will be
coaching. This again will be assessed formatively through a self-assessed Plicker question.
The technology I will be using this unit will be online video to show rugby games and skills and Plickers which is a data
gathering tool that is fast and easy to use in the classroom. Plickers explanation:
