Neste trabalho, Babalawo Obanifa deve examinar brevemente Opa Osooro / Opa
In this work babalawo Obanifa shall briefly examine Opa Osooro /Opa Osun, its
uses, and how it can be consecrated. Opa Osooro which is also know as Opa
Orire (Ekiti) Opa Orere(Oyo),it is also know as Opa Osun or Opa osungaga). It
is used by Yoruba babalawos (diviners) as a symbol of office. Some orisa preists
or preistess also have it, some family compound also consecrate it as a symbol of
authority in the family. But it is commonly used by babalawo, and the staff of the
babalawo are called
Opa Osun.
Blood sacrifices are made to the staff as an altar to Orunmila. The sacrifices are
believed to replenish the babalawos abilities and power (ase) to prevent death
and overcome other destructive forces. When not in use, the staff is stuck into the
ground in front of the babalawo’s house (and by an akoko tree) to protect the
babalawo while he sleeps.
The first thing to do If you want to Consecrate Opa Osun is not to buy a ready
made one. Go to the blacksmith Who made them. Tell him you are going to pay
him well that he should make the bells of the Opa osun without dipping them to
the water through out the process of making. Tell him you Dont want the bells
part and the bird to be make with using of water. He will understand your need
and charge you accordingly. After the whole staff has been make following the
instruction giving. Then get the following leaves :Ewe Oyoyo /ewedu,
Ooyo(leave of Corchorus Olitorius) ,Ewe Awayeiku (leave of Calyptrochilum
christyanum,)Ebire tabi ebolo(leave of Crassocephalum rubens),Ewe efun ale
(Leave of Aerva lanata) Ewe Abamonda (leave of Bryophyllum pinnatum), Ewe
jenjoko (leave of Cissampelos mucronata) ewe Omisisin (leave of Aberus

bowl put all the leaves inside.imprint odu Osetura seven times and pour it Inside.
Use the gin to squise it. Did the bird and the bell part of osun staff up side down
Inside this prepration. Use Y shape stick to support it to make sure it is standing.
Leave it to get consecrated for seven day. After seven day. Remove it and use a
cock to venerate it and kola nut with four lobes. You throw the rest of the
preparation to Ogun and Esu shrine respectively. Your Opa osun has become
consecrated. You must not allow it to lie down again. It must always remain
standing.
It is instructive that many Opa osun be seen around or sold today did not pass
through this procees, especially the blacksmith special process of not using water
to make the bells and the bird part. Beware of what you have with you. This
documentry is aim at preventing the extinction of this estoteric knowledge.
