Assignment 1 (A)

Power Transmission – Gear Drive

1. A gear box has an input speed of 2000 rpm clockwise and an output speed of 500 rpm
anticlockwise. The input power is 50 kW and the efficiency is 60%. Determine the following:

i. The input torque

ii. The output power
iii. The output torque
iv. The holding torque

2. A gearbox must produce an output power and torque of 40 kW and 60 Nm when the input
shaft rotates at 1000 rpm. Determine the following:

i. The gear ratio

ii. The input power assuming an efficiency of 70%

3. A simple train has 3 gears. Gear A is the input and has 50 teeth. Gear C is the output and has
150 teeth. Gear A rotates at 1500 rpm anticlockwise. Calculate the gear ratio and the output
speed. The input torques on A is 12 Nm and the efficiency is 75%. Calculate the output
power and the holding torque.

4. A simple gear train has two spur gears. The input gear has 20 teeth and the output gear has
100 teeth. The input rotates at 2000 rpm clockwise.

i. Calculate the gear ratio and the output speed

ii. The input torque is 15 Nm and the efficiency is 65%. Calculate the output power
and the holding torque.

5. Calculate the gear ratio for compound chain shown in figure below. If the input gear rotates
clockwise, in which direction does the output rotates?
GEAR TEETH
A 20
B 100
C 40
D 100
E 10
F 100
6. Gear A is the input and revolves at 1200 rpm clockwise viewed from the left end. The input
torque is 30 Nm and the efficiency is 70%.

GEAR TEETH
A 50
B 150
C 30
D 60

Calculate the following:

i. The output speed and its direction

ii. The output power
iii. The fixing torque

7. Explain in detail three (3) types of gear that used in real engineering applications.
