Introduction
• General physical characteristics:
– Polymers vary in form from viscous liquids (oligomers) to
brittle, rubbery, or gummy solids
– Solid polymers can be amorphous (glassy), crystalline, or both
– Polymer properties may change with physical stress
(stretching, compression)
– Polymer solutions are viscous, even at low solute
