Prince. This is a very strong explanation of the Learner Profiles and
how they are important for inventors - 6

What are the three most important IB LEARNER PROFILES for being an INVENTOR? Explain:
1. The first one is thinker because I think you need to think creatively and critically to invent something new. If you don’t think critically then you
won’t come up with anything and you won’t be able to copy somebody else ideas.
2. The second one for me is caring because you need to care about the users that are using your invention and you need to care about the
world. For example cars, cars are very good for people but not the world because it’s polluting the world.
3. Lastly is inquirer, first the inventor needs to ask what do people need or what will help the world. Then after you have your question you
solve it by inventing something.

How will learning to TINKER and INVENT help you understand SYSTEMS better?
● We need to understand the system to make something. For example, you want to make a phone but you don’t know what to put inside then
you can’t make it.

● So then you need to learn about the system to understand how it works.

● Then you need to use your system on your invention, then hopefully you’ll have a good invention.

Pick an IB LEARNER PROFILE that you need to work on. Set yourself a goal for improving in this unit:
● I pick inquirer because I want to show independence and ask more questions about my work or project. I will try to be on time this unit and
finish every assignments I have and get 7-8 on my grades.

THE STEAM ENGINE

Features:
● The steam engines has hot steam that uses a boiler to create heat energy then part of it
turns into work. The steam then can be more heated by letting it pass the superheater
from the boiler to the engine. A superheater that is mostly used is a couple of parallel
pipes group together that there surface is exposed to the hot gases.

● A reciprocating engine is a piston and cylinder type of steam engine. It pressure the steam
into the cylinder by a valve mechanism. When the steam expands it will start to push the
piston that is connected to a crank on a flywheel to produce a motion.

● The steam turbine discharged at a high velocity that goes through a nozzle then flow
through moving blades and stationary, this causes the rotor to move at high speed. The
steam engine is more compact and make more higher temperature than the reciprocating
steam engine. This mechanism is used worldwide to get electricity.
● The steam engine was also used for taking water out of the mines. Then many more
development has been made to make it easier and more efficient to use.
● Once the steam engine for taking water out has been made, a carriage steam engine has
been made. It is for carrying people or things around without using your energy. This was
very successful in Wales.

History and Uses of the Steam Engine:

● In 1698 Thomas Savery made a pump that is operated by workers to raise water from mines. Then in 1712 Thomas Newcomen
developed a better and easier steam engine that has a piston to separate the condensing steam from the water. Then in 1765 James Watt
improved the Newcomen steam engine by adding separate condenser to avoid heating and cooling with each stroke.
● A steam carriage was built in France by Nicholas Joseph in the 1769. Then in England a man Richard Trevithick was the first man to use
the steam carriage on a railway. In 1803 he build a locomotive that in 1804 was very successful in Wales.

THE INDUSTRIAL FACTORY

Features:
● The industrial factory was a big change since the industrial factories was made it
produced lots of thing in a low price which farmers started to lose jobs. Then children
started to work there but they worked each day for too long that many children dies but
the population increases too. Since the children need to take care of their families by there
own because people doesn’t buy vegetables and meat with the farmer anymore.

● There are four reasons the industrial revolution started and in England. First Britain has
many coals and irons. Secondly, Britain has many empires to get raw materials. Third,
Britain has work-force already because of the agriculture revolution. Lastly, Britain has
many inventors that has been very successful.

● The technological improvement is necessary because of the cottage and spinning making.
This means that the cottage revolution will extinct because we can buy it from the
industrial factories.

● The workers wages was very low during the industrial revolution. The factory was not fair
to the workers and a professional worker gets only 1.5 euros for each week! Womens gets
only 35p a week and children only gets 17p a week.

● Once the industrial revolution grows the rules started to grow as well. Rules are enforced
such as children under age 9 is not allowed in the cottage areas, children age 8-13 can
only work for 6 and a half hours a day. Then a man named Robert Owen was willing to
change things by giving better apartment and water to the workers, he also set up some
infants schools.

History and Uses of the Factory:

● In the modern history we change from an agriculture economy to an industrial economy. The process begins in the 18th century an it
spread to around the world. The word Industrial Revolution came from an english man for the development of the country.

THE RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE

Features:

● I think one of the features is that rube goldberg can be build with anything. For example its using an umbrella and some frying pans to
do it. So this allow us to be creative and think of things that fits your design, using a lot of things is better than using only one thing for
the whole design.
● The bad things about this is that everything needs to be connected and has to work together. If it somehow didn’t connect to each other
or doesn’t work together the machine will fail immediately. This also requires to test something out first before doing it.

● In this picture that I think that the machine can also tell us something or a message to the audience that is watching the machine. They
might not have a message to tell the audience but it should have a purpose there, maybe for decoration but it still has a purpose.

● I think the rube goldberg machine also uses science to know like the potential energy and the kinetic energy. If you only uses your
creativity it might fail.

● The rube goldberg machine is that it always need something to make everything work which is usually a ball then it carry on to
other object.

Uses of the Rube Goldberg Machine:

The Rube goldberg machine is basically just a very complicated machine that does very simple task. For example in the video that I just watched
is just to let the reindeer with a broom hit a button to light up a christmas tree, which we can just hit the button and it’ll will work. So it can be used
for many thing that are simple.

How are Steam Engines, Factories, and Rube Goldberg Machines similar?

● One things that is similar and is also our key concept is system! These machine works together and all of the have different parts doing
different jobs. If one thing does not work the whole things fail, this way we need to always check if all the parts are working.

● These machines are all man-made. These are not from the nature and it is build by people to do useful(not useful) things.

● These machines are all powered by resources such as fuel. If they are not powered then they are useless.

How are Steam Engines, Factories, and Rube Goldberg Machines different?

● All of the machines use different materials. That means they are completely different on the materials.

● The machines are all used for different things. For instance, the factory was used to build things like the cotton for dresses.

● Every machines has it purpose. These machines purpose are very different from each other like the rube goldberg are for fun.
