I have often met people who complain about how reading is just boring and they
just can't seem to take time out for it. Well, if you ask me, my End Semester
Exams are approaching and I am in an endless battle of procrastination and more
procrastination. Yesterday, I was supposed to finish 2 Units but what did I do? I
finished a 400 page novel. Don't ask me how. Anyway, you see, reading is so
captivating that it makes you want to forget your crucial tasks and devote time to
it. This isn't necessarily good.
However, I will tell you one thing, I wasn't a reader myself and to be honest, as
lame as it sounds, I started reading Enid Blyton & Roald Dahl. This sparked my
affection towards paperbacks & hardbacks. There was something so enthralling
about living in another individual’s world and live in their adventure. You also
learn so many things! For example, vocabulary and the subtle art of exaggeration.
So, if you want to get interested in reading, read a relatively small and easy book
about your interest. For instance, I would highly recommend books like Night by
Elie Wiesel or Man’s Search For Meaning by Dr Viktor Frankl if you like Wars.
They are compact & not difficult to read. If you like Mysteries, Agatha Christie is a
wonderful writer to start with. I have read countless books by her. I am not telling
you to start with a book like War and Peace or The Fountainhead.
Take your time with it. No rushing. Be patient with it. You can't expect a suitcase
full of thrill and an enthralling plot from the first chapter itself. A plot takes time
to build. If you don't enjoy the book, keep it aside and read something else. Life is
too short for reading books you don't enjoy.
Also, one more thing that works for me. When you buy books, you are essentially
spending a lot of money since books aren't cheap. So, you have 4 options:-

Leave it in some forgotten nook and corner of your house and let it get
dusty and mouldy.
Or, which works for me, feel guilty of spending your hard earned (in my
case, hard given) money. Let the guilt do it’s effects and voila! You might
just actually read a book.
Ask people for suggestions. Ask your 6th grade English Teacher perhaps.
Remember that no book is too “below par in terms of intellect” for you.
An innocuous looking Children’s book with illustrations might just teach
you a lesson for a lifetime. It might throw you back into your childhood.
It’s about perspective.
Finally, if you got past Buying a book & not discarding it, here is the fun part. This
is what I do when I want to enjoy reading:-
Give the book a chance to blossom. Trust me, they aren't boring.
After you read a book, discuss it with somebody. I don't know, maybe
write a review.
And if you got through all these 3 steps, reward yourself by buying another book
and perpetuating the cycle. Good Luck!
