2. Before we get to that point, we need to understand what
persuasion is and how we can write it.
3. When we are writing persuasively, we are arguing our point of
view. Can someone tell me what a point of view is? We talked
about this when we were looking at the speaker in reading.
Students will raise their hands to answer. A point of view is a
position that we take on a subject or topic. This is typically how
you feel about the subject.
4. Raise your hand if you like math. Some students may raise their
hands. Some of us like math while others don’t like it.
5. Raise your hand if you like science. Some students may raise
their hands. Some of us like science while others do not.
6. We all have ideas of what we like and dislike. When we are
writing persuasively, we are trying to get people to see our side of
the topic and to side with us. Debates are an example of
persuasion.
7. Today we are going to be writing a book review on a book you
have read. Can someone explain to me what a book review is?
Students will raise their hands to explain this to the class. A book
review is telling whether or not we liked the book and why. What
are some important concepts to include in a book review? Turn
and talk to your partner before we share with the class. Students
will talk with a partner before taking turns to talk with the class.
8. As a class, we are going to write one based on our read aloud,
Ramona Quimby Age 8. This will be written on our chart paper or
on a notebook on an elmo.
9. First we have to decide if we are going to recommend this book.
So show of hands if you would recommend this book to a friend to
read.
10. Next, we need at least three facts to support our decision.
11. Finally, we want to make sure to the Title and Author are on the
review.
12. Some sentence stems to use would be….
a. I would recommend __________ by ______because
_______.
b. I would not recommend ________ by ____ because ______.
c. A reason to read this book would be ____________.
d. A reason not to read this book would be ____________.
Name: _________________________________________
Example:
I would recommend The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place: Book I: The Mysterious Howling by Maryrose
Wood because it keeps the reader on his/her toes the whole time. A reason to read this book would be that the
reader wants to know where the children are from. Another reason I would recommend this book would be to figure
out what the mysterious howling is. The last reason to read this book would be that the characters are funny and
the sounds they make are fun to read. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did.
