2. Lesson Objective & Targeted Outcomes
➔ The Learner Will be begin to identify what persuasion is in writing.
➔ The Learner Will be able to write a persuasive book review that includes an introduction, reasons supporting the student’s opinion, linking words to further
explain,and a concluding statement.

4. Knowing the Students
➔ Prior to the lesson being taught the students will have written their thoughts on a book they have read in their reader’s journal which will be used to see
how they develop their thoughts of what they have read.
➔ The book review is going to be the baseline assessment to see how the students are writing/developing their thoughts.
➔ The students will have a basic understanding of writing a few sentences in order that create a paragraph.
➔ Depending on the time of year, we may have talked about book reviews prior and how they can help us decide if we want to read them. If that has not
happened, then this would be the first introduction to book reviews.
➔ Students must already have the knowledge of the book they have previously read.

2. Before we get to that point, we need to understand what
persuasion is and how we can write it.
3. When we are writing persuasively, we are arguing our point of
view. Can someone tell me what a point of view is? We talked
about this when we were looking at the speaker in reading.
Students will raise their hands to answer​. A point of view is a
position that we take on a subject or topic. This is typically how
you feel about the subject.
4. Raise your hand if you like math. ​Some students may raise their
hands.​ Some of us like math while others don’t like it.
5. Raise your hand if you like science. ​Some students may raise
their hands.​ Some of us like science while others do not.
6. We all have ideas of what we like and dislike. When we are
writing persuasively, we are trying to get people to see our side of
the topic and to side with us. Debates are an example of
persuasion.
7. Today we are going to be writing a book review on a book you
have read. Can someone explain to me what a book review is?
Students will raise their hands to explain this to the class. ​A book
review is telling whether or not we liked the book and why. What
are some important concepts to include in a book review? Turn
and talk to your partner before we share with the class. ​Students
will talk with a partner before taking turns to talk with the class.
8. As a class, we are going to write one based on our read aloud,
Ramona Quimby Age 8. This will be written on our chart paper or
on a notebook on an elmo.
9. First we have to decide if we are going to recommend this book.
So show of hands if you would recommend this book to a friend to
read.
10. Next, we need at least three facts to support our decision.
11. Finally, we want to make sure to the Title and Author are on the
review.

4. When you finish your book review, you can either write
another one or you can try writing a review on a tv show or
movie you have watched recently in a different format than
what you used the first time.

the class meeting area. We are going to spend a few minutes
sharing with a partner and as a class.

Tomorrow we are going to talk a little bit more about what persuasion
is and how we can use it in our writing.

reader wants to know where the children are from. Another reason I would recommend this book would be to figure
out what the mysterious howling is. The last reason to read this book would be that the characters are funny and
the sounds they make are fun to read. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did.
