SERVER

A server is a computer program that provides services to other computer programs

(and their users) in the same or other computers. The computer that a server program runs in is
also frequently referred to as a server. That machine may be a dedicated server or used for
other purposes as well.
ROLE

A server role is a set of software programs that, when they are installed and properly configured, lets a
computer perform a specific function for multiple users or other computers within a network. Generally,
roles share the following characteristics.

Active Directory
msdn.microsoft.com
Active Directory (AD) is a directory service that Microsoft developed for Windows
domain networks. It is included in most Windows Server operating systems as a set of
processes and services. Initially, Active Directory was only in charge of centralized
domain management.

Web server
Web servers are computers that deliver (serves up) Web pages. Every Web server has an
IP address and possibly a domain name.
Domain
Domain is a group of computers and devices on a network that are administered as a unit with
common rules and procedures.
Organization unit
An organizational unit (OU) is a subdivision within an Active Directory into which you can
place users, groups, computers, and other organizational units. You can createorganizational
units to mirror your organization's functional or business structure. Each domain can
implement its own organizational unit hierarchy.
Domain Users and groups
Shares
It is a device or piece of information on a computer that can be remotely accessed from another
computer typically via LAN or an enterprise internet.
Server Manager
Is a new feature that is included in Windows Server 2008, which is designed to guide
information technology (IT) administrators through the process of installing, configuring, and
managing server roles and features that are part of the Windows Server 2008 release.
Disk partition
Disk partition is the creation of one or more regions on a hard disk or other secondary storage,
so that an operating system can manage information in each region separately. And A hard disk is
part of a unit, often called a "disk drive," "hard drive," or "hard disk drive," that stores and
provides relatively quick access to large amounts of data .
Client
A client is a piece of computer hardware or software that accesses a service made available by
a server. The server is often (but not always) on another computer system, in which case the client
accesses the service by way of a network.
FEATURES
DNS
(1) Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an internet service that translates domain name into
IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really
based on IP address. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the
corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4.
