Global Citizenship, Locally Rooted Globally Respected

“Global Citizenship, Locally Rooted Globally Respected” is the slogan of

Universitas Gadjah Mada. After all, what does it mean?
We know that starting from the year of 2016, Indonesia has been
participated in ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). This program is aimed to
increase the competitiveness of ASEAN and so, to compete with China and India
to attract investation from another countries. Foreign investments are very
important to increase job vacancies and to increase prosperity. Thus, one ASEAN
country is allowed to sell her products easily to her neighbor in across ASEAN
countries. Hence, the competition will be more strict (BBC, 2014).
The incoming question is, are we ready?
There are many challenges to prepare ourselves to enter the program of
AEC. The bureaucracy has to be more simplier. The useless rules have to be
reduced. And the most important thing, the human resources have to be prepared.
This is where the education sector takes part. In every education level,
starting from primary schools, everyone should be introduced to the concept of
AEC along by increasing their skills so they would be prepared in the future. But,
when the globalization era has come to the entire world, with or without AEC, we
still have to be prepared.
Sometimes, because of globalization, we feel that the world is shrinking.
There is no borders among countries. The world is not more than a village when
everybody knows each other and there is no borders among its citizens.
Everybody is connected. And with this connection, sometimes we can forget our
roots, our traditions, our culture, and our identity.
Global citizen is someone who identifies with being part of an emerging
world community and whose actions contribute to building this community’s
values and practices.” (Israel, 2014). Furthermore, a global citizen is someone
who is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own roleas a world
citizen (Oxfam in Arendt). How to be effective global citizens? Arendt said, to be
effective global citizens, young people need to be flexible, creative and proactive.

They need to be able to solveproblems, make decisions, think critically,

communicate ideas effectively and work well within teams and groups.
That is where Universitas Gadjah Mada stands as a world class university
that based on its local culture, but affected the world. Universitas Gadjah Mada is
ready to provide the best human resources who does not only know about their
cultures, but also able to compete in this globalization era to face the ASEAN
Economic Community.
Finally, Dean of Faculty of Economics and Business, Prof. Wihana Kirana
Jaya, M.Soc.Sc., said, “We’re ready to support UGM to become the University
that is Globally Respected, Locally Rooted,” (UGM, 2013).
