NEMA Enclosure Types.

3.2 Solenoid Valves

3.2.1 General

(a) A solenoid valve is operated by a built-in actuator in the form of an electrical coil (solenoid) and a
plunger. Solenoid valves are normally used as three or five way pilots for the operation of air
actuated on/off process valves for ESD or sequence applications, sample valves, dampers etc.
Solenoid valves shall not be used to directly switch process fluid unless agreed with the Owner.

(b) The solenoid valve capacity (Cv value) shall be sufficient to achieve the specified opening or
closing (stroking) time for the final process valve. The minimum port size in the solenoid valve
shall be stated by the solenoid valve Vendor/Contractor and shall be taken into account when
calculating the stroking time.

(c) The use of pilot operated solenoid valves is not recommended. Where the service may require
ports in excess of 0.5 in (12mm), (e.g. on long stroke, large volume pneumatic cylinder actuators),
volume booster relays, quick exhaust valves operating in conjunction with the solenoid valves
shall be considered.

(d) The cases and enclosures of solenoid valves installed outdoors shall give protection to IP 65 (to
IEC 529) or NEMA 4.

(e) The solenoid valves shall be capable of a minimum of 106 operations without failure.

3.2.2 Electrical

(a) Coils for solenoid valves shall preferably be specified either for operation at 24 V DC or 110 V
DC or 120 V AC, 50 or 60 Hz. On existing plant, the operating voltage will be determined by the
available existing supply, whilst for new plant, the voltage will be dependent on the allowable
voltage drop in field cables of reasonable cross-section. It should be noted that response times on
DC operation can be approximately 50% higher than on AC operation.

(b) Solenoid valve coils shall be moulded (silicon impregnated) and encapsulated and specified for
continuous duty at the rated voltage and frequency.

(c) The solenoid shall be capable of operating at the nominal voltage ± 10%.

(d) The solenoid coils shall use BS 2757 or NEMA Class F insulation, as a minimum, in all general
services. BS 2757 or NEMA Class H insulation shall be used as a minimum in all emergency
shutdown services.

(e) The solenoid shall be fitted with voltage suppression diodes, preferably integral with the coil, to
eliminate the generation of high voltages when the coil is de-energised.

(f) Intrisically safe, low power solenoid valves may be used where the Owner's preference is for an
intrinsically safe system.

(g) The solenoids shall be provided with integral function box with terminals. Flying leads shall be
wired to the terminals. The cable entry shall be stated on the Data Sheets and shall be 0.75 in NPT
or 20mm ISO. Terminals shall be suitable for 2.5mm2 cable. Both junction box and terminals
shall be suitable for the hazardous area classification.

(h) Solenoid valves used in hazardous areas shall be certified by an approved body for use in
GENERAL ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION GES J.07

Rev 0 1999
accordance with the area classification. The requirements shall be detailed on the Data Sheets.

(i) Solenoid operated valves without manual reset facilities are preferred. Emergency shutdown duty
solenoid operated valves shall not have manual reset. On other duties the solenoid valves may be
specified to be either automatically, electrically or manually reset depending on the project
requirements. These shall be detailed on the Data Sheets.

4.0 MATERIALS

4.1 Materials

4.1.1 The valve bodies and trims of solenoid valves on air services shall be manufactured from type 304 or
316 stainless steel.

4.1.2 Where solenoid valves are approved for installation directly in process lines the construction material
shall comply with the requirements of the piping specification.

4.1.3 Brass or aluminium shall not be used for solenoid valve bodies or trims on any service.

4.2 Service

4.2.1 All parts exposed to the process fluid shall be resistant to the corrosive properties of that fluid.

4.2.2 No copper or copper bearing alloys shall be used in solenoid valve components in contact with process
fluids, or in locations where exposure to sour gases (containing sulphur compounds) may occur.

5.0 MANUFACTURE

5.1 QA/QC

The Vendor/Contractor shall submit to the Owner, for approval, details of his proposed quality
assurance and quality control plan.

5.2 Certification and Labelling

5.2.1 Solenoid operated valves shall be certified as being suitable for installation and operation in accordance
with the specified area classification. The certification of valves for use in hazardous areas (normally
Ex 'd' or 'Explosion-proof') shall be by CSA (Canadian), FMA or UL (USA), BASEEFA (UK) or to
IEC/CENELEC Standards.

5.2.2 All solenoid valves shall be provided with identification tag plates and manufacturer's nameplates.

5.2.3 The solenoid identification tag plate shall be stainless steel, engraved or stamped with the valve tag
number and securely attached to the valve.

5.2.4 The valve identification tag plate shall not be part of the manufacturer's nameplate.

5.2.5 All solenoid valves shall be provided with a permanently attached manufacturer's nameplate which shall
include, where relevant, the following information:

Manufacturered name, Model and Serial Number

Date of Manufacture
Company Purchase Order/Contract Number
Rating of pressure retaining parts

6.0 INSTALLATION

6.1 Solenoid valves operating in conjunction with process valves without positioner shall be installed
directly in the instrument air line to the actuator. Where solenoid valves operate in conjunction with
control valves with positioners they shall be installed between the position output and the actuators.

6.2 Solenoid valves which have flying leads shall be provided with a junction box, suitable for the
hazardous area and complete with 2.5mm2 terminals for the termination of the leads.

7.0 INSPECTION

7.1 Procedures

7.1.1 It is normally not necessary to inspect solenoid valves at the Vendor/Contractor's premises before
shipment.

7.1.2 The Vendor/Contractor shall ensure that internal inspection is carried out in accordance with the
Vendor/Contractor's Quality Plan.

7.1.3 All valves shall be checked for damage and conformity to the Purchase Order/Contract immediately on
receipt at site.

7.1.4 All valves for installation in hazardous areas shall be checked to ensure the suitability of the protection
for the relevant area classification.

7.2 Tagging

The valves shall be checked to ensure that all valves have been correctly tagged and identified.

7.3 Nameplates

Nameplate details of each valve (See Section 5.2.5 (e)) shall be checked.

8.0 TESTING

8.1 Factory Testing

8.1.1 Witnessed factory testing of standard solenoid valves at the Vendor/Contractor's premises shall not
normally be required. The Vendor/Contractor may be requested to supply the results of internal testing
of minimum solenoid hold-in and drop-out voltages (or currents), and valve leakage.

8.1.2 Witnessed testing may be required if:

valves have undergone major modification to meet specific requirements,

valve is a new or unproven model,
Vendor/Contractor is a newly qualified manufacturer.

all data is supplied and is correct.

8.2.2 Solenoid valves shall be checked to ensure that these are free from damage, function correctly and are
completely in accordance with the specification.

8.2.3 Solenoid valves shall be tested for operation and leak tightness in a fully equipped workshop before
installation.

8.2.4 All tests shall simulate, as far as is reasonably practicable, the design process conditions.
