Timeline Tool: Timeline “Readwritethink.org”
While searching for a timeline tool on the Internet I came across a great resource
called “Readwritethink.org.” I choose to use this interactive tool for the timeline tool
component of the TPACK project. This interactive timeline tool was extremely simple to
use as allowing for the process of creating this timeline to be more focused on the content
and not solely on learning the new technology. The timeline tool on “readwritethink.org”
allows for you to create a timeline using text and pictures. The tool only permits for you
to use a brief amount of text, which creates a very easy to read and summative form of
timeline. You may also embed links to further websites to enhance the information
included in the timeline. The timeline I created included what I believe to be the most
important events leading up to women’s suffrage. My timeline includes pictures and text
and if need be can be easily printed out in order to allow students without computers to
take it home.
I really enjoyed using this timeline tool. There are many timeline tools that can be
used in the classroom but I found that this specific one was very self-explanatory making
it a very good classroom tool. The timeline tool forces the students to condense the
information in order to create a condensed history lesson for them to have for themselves
and share with their peers. I inserted several pictures into the timeline as well because I
am a very visual learner and having these pictures along with the events makes it much
easier to remember. If I could change this timeline tool I would allow for videos to be
imbedded into the timeline to add more depth to it but I still do appreciate how simple
this tool is to use. As a high school history teacher I could use this tool in so many
different ways and for many different lessons. I would like to typically use this for events
in which there are several main events that are very significant in order to see the process
of the events. I believe the lesson on women’s suffrage is a perfect example of this.

Video Creation Tool: Bitable
Videos can be very purposefully integrated into social studies classrooms
especially at the high school level. Videos are a simple way to steer your classroom away
from boring lecture-based lessons into more technology based, creating an exciting
learning environment. I used an application called Biteable to create a digital storytelling
tool. Biteable is a great tool that can be used to craft short videos. It is a very self-
explanatory tool that any student in the 21st century will be able to use easily! You may
choose from hundreds of templates to create your story along with music and color
schemes that truly allow you to personalize your video.
I used the application Biteable to create a video to explain a particular political
party in the United States. In this lesson the students were instructed to research different
political parties and choose one to create a video advertisement for. They were instructed
to watch professional campaign videos to understand what those candidates include in
their videos to make them persuasive. Students were free to use creative liberties in their
campaign video in order to make their party as appealing as possible.
The Biteable I created was on the Green Party. I researched the Green Party
mainly searching through their official website. The video included all of the points that I
found to be the most important to the Green Party making it appeal to the audience as the
best party to join. Creating this Biteable was a fun way to learn about a political party
without simply taking notes or writing a research paper. Using this tool gave me great
confidence that not only I could use this tool to enhance my lessons but my students
could use it as well in place of traditional assessments.

Assessment Tool: Kahoot

Assessments in the classroom have come so far from simply paper to pen tests

and quizzes. With technology becoming such a prominent figure in the classroom it is

important that we as teachers use technology to assess students in different ways. I have

recently discovered an assessment tool called Kahoot. Kahoot is a way to assess students

in a fun game like manner. To use Kahoot students can use laptops or smartphones to

participate in the quiz. If you have a smart board in your classroom you can project the

questions on the smart board. The questions will appear along with a timer. The students

can create code names or use their own name to keep track of how they are doing. The

score will be based on a gold, silver and bronze system.

The Kahoot I created was for a government class in which I was teaching the

three branches of government. I created the questions to align with what the students

were learning with key phrases they would be familiar with. By using a Kahoot quiz

every once in a while throughout a unit as a teacher you are able to see where the students

are at without making the quiz weigh as much as a normal one would. Kahoot quizzes are

fun and can be used as a game-like activity in the classroom. You can use Kahoot for

many different purposes but I found this way was effective in my field experience

classroom.

Multimodal Tool: Padlet
The multimodal tool that I used for a lesson on the Industrial Revolution is a
website called Padlet. Padlet is essentially an online pin board on which you can post
practically anything from text to videos. This tool is a perfect way to spice up note taking
inside or outside the classroom allowing for easy access to links and other resources,
which would be more difficult simply completed with pen and paper resources. The tool
Padlet is multimodal because it has many different capabilities, this allows for the
information that a teacher teaches to not be confined to the four walls of the classroom.
Using Padlet is simple and a great way to stay organized when sifting through
multiple Internet resources. There are no limitations in Padlet as to what you can add
making it a great tool in the classroom. This multimodal tool is a great asset in a high
school classroom because it brings research and note taking to a whole new level. It
allows for students to collaborate by laying out their notes and research in a very easy to
see and accessible fashion. This was a great tool to use for the assignment on the
Industrial Revolution because there are so many primary documents and videos on the
Internet that would add some much depth to a student’s understanding of this time period.
This tool is also a great way to make research easier to navigate. Often times I found
myself drowning in research not knowing how to take it all in and how to gather all my
sources in an organized fashion. Padlet is a great way to stay organized especially while
writing research papers in high school.

Synchronous Collaboration Tool: Google Hangout

Google is constantly adding to their applications, cleaning them up and finding

new ways to improve. A recent discovery of mine has been “Google Hangouts” and I
have used this tool to replace other forms of video conferencing because it has proven to
be efficient and effective. Many schools are transitioning into becoming “Google
schools” which means every student has a Gmail account. I may be biased but I have
found Gmail to be the user-friendliest account for emailing. Anyone with a Gmail
account also has access to the wonderful synchronous collaboration tool, Google
hangouts. Google Hangouts is a great tool to use in the classroom as it fosters
synchronous collaboration from as close as the next school over or across the pond.
In a lesson I created about civic responsibility I included a videoconference with a
school from Austria. Prior to the videoconference we would have a discussion as a class
about civic responsibility in a democratic society. After discussing the main points the
students would complete a case study on civic responsibility in order to spark questions
about how civic responsibility works in other countries based on their form of
government and different culture. Once the students were able to create interview
questions for the high school in Austria we would then video call them using Google
Hangouts. This allowed for students to draw from the ISTE standard, “global
communicator.” They were able to gather information thousands of miles from their
comfortable classroom environment. I am really looking forward to using this tool in my
classroom as I believe it is such an important aspect of social studies is to learn about
how other countries operate as well as your own.

Image Based Tool: Piktochart

The image-based tool I used was an infographic using the tool Piktochart.
Piktochart is an application in which you can create posters, infographics and
presentations. These infographics have HTML publishing capabilities meaning that
anyone can view your beautifully created graphic design. This makes it a very useful tool
in the classroom because it is easily accessible with a computer. Piktochart is a great
resource for teachers and students to use in order to make eye-pleasing graphics that
include can include whatever content you so choose.
I used the application Piktochart to create an infographic about the Irish
immigration to America during the potato famine. In this lesson students are instructed to
research a culture that immigrated to America making it the great melting pot that it is. I
chose to research the Irish immigration after the potato famine because of my own
heritage. Making this infographic was fun and simple. The application Piktochart is very
self-explanatory and can be used many different ways in order to create whatever kind of
graphic you need for class. I think this tool would be a great one to use as opposed to
PowerPoint in order to present information in a new and creative way. Students will be
able to invoke creativity and artistic ability into their use of Piktochart making it a great
tool for the classroom!

Digital Storyteller: Google Tour Builder
Google Tour Builder is a truly Revolutionary tool that acts as a digital storyteller.
This Google tool is an easy to use and very thorough way of creating virtual tours that
can include images, voice, video and text. This resource is a great way to go to every
monument in Washington D.C. without leaving your classroom. Google Tour Builder
utilizes the amazing mapping capabilities of Google Maps connecting them in order to
create a captivating lesson. This application is a great way for students to have a visual of
what they are learner if they are not able to get there themselves.
The Google Tour Builder I created is a expedition throughout the city of Rome. I
would be able to integrate this tour into a lesson in an Ancient History class easily by
giving students a visual of Rome now. I know that Ancient History was not my favorite
subject in high school because I did not feel that I could really connect to that time period
very well, but after traveling to different Ancient cities I felt that I had a deeper
connection to that specific history. If I am able to bring that feeling to my students
without breaking the bank I will! By creating this Google Tour Builder I was able to
choose famous landmarks in Rome in which held the history of the great city. I included
pictures and text to describe the history behind it and the significance it holds in Rome.
This virtual tool is a great way to connect history to a visual aspect in order to draw in
your student’s attention. Students can also easily use this application in order to make
their own tours!

Text Based Tool: Prezi
The text-based tool I choose to work with was Prezi. Prezi is an application that is
accessible to anyone with a computer. With Prezi you can create PowerPoint like
Presentations that have a new flare to them. This text-based tool is a very fluid as it is
based on a large blank canvas as opposed to individual slides as PowerPoint does. This
fluidity gives way for easily comprehendible Presentations that all link together in one
big picture.
The Prezi I created was for a lesson on the Cold War. Using Prezi inspired me to
be more creative than I generally would be if I used a basic PowerPoint Presentation. I
created the Prezi to resemble a newspaper from the Cold War. I included the date from
the time and “headlines” that could have been used for the time as well. This Presentation
brought to life the lesson on the Cold War as the students were not simply flipping
through slides but reading through a newspaper. The Presentation is pleasing to the eye
and adds a flare to the monotony of slide presentations. Prezi is a tool that both students
and teachers can make great use of as it is easy to use and a fun way of making
presentations more fluid and interesting.
