Architecture

A. User Analysis

The users of the healing place (interfaith retreat village) are classified into three (3): the tourist, administrative
personnel and service and maintenance personnel. The proposal will accommodate tourists, teenagers and above, which is
divided into two types: Walk in tourist and Stay in Tourists. These tourists are the main users of the project and greatly
involved in the healing environment of the interfaith retreat village. The administrative personnel are the people with
important positions and responsible in keeping the sacredness of the healing place and supervising the healing place’s
program improvement in healing, meditating and relaxing. Service and maintenance personnel are the people who are
responsible in keeping the tourists safe, well accommodated, comfortable, secured and relaxed. They keep the spaces well-
organize and accommodating.

The table shows who the users and what kind of users will be in the proposal project. Identifying users is essential
in providing proper spaces. It is to understand how to align the activities and the spaces that the users require.
Designing spaces will be based on what the needs and what are the activities of the prospect users. Then after, the
design and arrangement of the spaces will tell how user should act and move.

B. Activity Flow Diagram

To be able to design the spaces properly, activities of the user should be address appropriately. To analyze the
activity thoroughly, the proponents create diagram that identify the activities in detailed. The activity flow diagram
shows connection between user and spaces. These diagrams analyze the activities that the user should perform/practice
in every space which is based on the goal of the proposal. Each user has its own activity, the diagrams below is based
on the activities that every type of user should perform.

CHAPTER 5 | 418
Hillside Eco-tourism Healing Place: Integration of Interfaith Retreat Village through Environmental Art Therapy Approach and Organic Architecture

Tourist is the major user of the healing place. Stay-in tourist is the type of tourist that chose to experience the
overall programs, activities and other healing process. These tourists experienced the sacredness of nature and the
harmony between man and God through activities in every space which helps the user in its healing. Activities in the

healing place strengthen the spiritual, mental and physical aspect of human. These activities depend in every space,
wherein spaces in the healing place dictate what activities that user/ visitor should perform/ act. Through the strong
connection of spaces and nature, activities are done according to the desire function of the space. These activities help the
tourist to be connected and engage in nature. The activities in all spaces also build a strong connection between man and
God.

2. Tourist (Walk-in/ Day tour)

CHAPTER 5 | 421

Ma. Lerry May S. Del Rosario | Mercado, Judea Ann A. | Ringor, Khaye Celeanne T.

The activities presented in the diagram highlights how spaces control the environment and the behavior of the
people. The day tour or walk-in tourists are the visitors that have limited opportunities to experience all the activities in
the healing place; one of these are relaxing activities wherein beauty of nature is the focal point and is exclusive and open
for all who seek relaxation within nature. The activities that are open and accessible for day tour or walk in tourists are

also manipulated by spaces and nature. These activities will make the tourists enjoy every spaces and design elements
wherein nature is the focus and incorporated within the space. These activities will also help in healing physical and
mental aspect of people.

3. Administrative Personnel

CHAPTER 5 | 423

Ma. Lerry May S. Del Rosario | Mercado, Judea Ann A. | Ringor, Khaye Celeanne T.

All employees have important roles to play, but the management and administrative staff are the backbone
of most lodging operations. Administrative staff oversee all aspects of healing place operations, including
maintenance (guest services), security, and finance and accounting.

4. Service and Maintenance Personnel

CHAPTER 5 | 424

To remain the safety, cleanliness and security of healing place, service and maintenance staff ensures that
everything is run smoothly and that everyone is safe and comfortable. This can extend from assisting the tourist from their
entry to patrolling the grounds at night to prevent any disturbance to the tourist.

C. Behavioral Analysis

The analysis of the user behavior is established on the classifications of the users within the healing place. The
behavior of use within the spaces is based on the interviews and researches on the previous chapters that the
proponents presented.

Arranging spaces based on its use and function is essential in the proposal. It is to separate and classify each space
based on the activities that will be performing in an area. Spaces that have the same effects and goals are clustered and
connected according to its activities and uses. The spaces are divided into several classifications: Administrative building,
Therapeutic Area, Universal Spirituality Spaces, Recreational and relaxation Area, Camping Site and a Connecting
Garden.

Classifying private and public spaces are the basis that the proponents considered in arranging of what spaces are
connected and adjacent with each other. Activities and type of users are also the major factor in identifying the connection
between spaces. The both types of user are active in some major spaces, these are the reception area, lobby, visitor lounge,
and the accounting window. It is based on their activity diagram. The connection of spaces in the administrative building
is carefully analyzed to be able to create spaces that are very convenient and accessible for all the users.

Therapeutic area consists of spaces that are related or connected with the physical and mental healing process.
Engaging the user with some activities that gives them relaxation, peaceful of mind and positive energy will help with
their fast recovery. In this area, cultural art of Filipino is one of the highlights in this area. The arrangement and clustering
of spaces are based on the activities that connected or related with the physical and mental aspect of people.

The spaces in univesal spiritual area are clustered by identifying what space need more privacy and spaces
that should be open to public. Meditation area are separated from public/ social spaces like recreational, and
cultural spaces, it is due to the required environment of the space. Meditation spaces need a peaceful and quiet
environment. Its location is distant from public spaces.

Recreational and relaxation spaces are separated from private areas like spiritual and therapeutic area. The
area is for recreational activities like swimming, picnics, and sigh-viewing. Sanctuary gardens are also provided in
this area. This recreational area is initially provided for day tour/ walk-in users to experience the power of nature
in healing and in relaxation.

social area of the users/ tourists. It has different types of garden and dining areas. It consists of different paths
going to different destinations of the proposal.

Immersing oneself in the outdoors helps people connect with nature in a way that's not possible
while surfing the web or even walking at the park. This is especially important for young people because
they're the ones who will be tasked with protecting the environment. Camping is a fantastic activity,
providing hours of enjoyment and a welcome opportunity to connect with loved ones, as well as nature.

E. Qualitative Analysis

The following qualitative analysis embodies the qualities of the proposal in the project and will serve as basis of
design needed in the Interfaith Retreat Village. It includes the five major concerns in formulating a design: goals, facts,
concepts, needs, and problems; in different areas such as function, form, economy, and time. The analysis was formulated
from the gathered data and comprehensive studies conducted in the previous chapters.

Each religion has different beliefs and practices, the challenge will be how to create an interfaith place without
affecting the differences of beliefs and practices of different religions. And through architectural manipulation on lights,
