Form 2: Statement of Purpose

Name of applicant Aly Mohammed ElSabbagh

Proposed graduate program Educational Leadership

I have always been interested in languages and language

teaching. When I got my B. A. in English language from
the Faculty of Alsun, Ain Shams University, in 1980, I
took up teaching as a career. I was lucky enough because
the School where I started working furnished the
atmosphere I had been dreaming of. The school principal
was so understanding and appreciative. The colleagues I
worked with were no less. The success I achieved as a
young teacher went beyond my expectations. I was soon
given significant tasks and every day I discovered that I
could do something that distinguished my overall
performance. On that very first year of my work
experience, I wrote and directed a play which was
televised on Channel II of the Egyptian TV, as part of the
school activities. It was considered a remarkable
achievement and was deemed for a time, a source of pride
for my family which motivated me to work still more
enthusiastically and continue my policy of self
improvement. Furthermore, the students I was teaching
were more than idealistic. They did inspire me and they
did teach me!!!

It may sound a bit strange to say that I have been actually

teaching for thirty years now! In fact, the school where I
work has given me a multitude of responsibilities to do at
the same time. In addition to being a teacher, I am a
senior master and a coordinator at a time and a vice
principal and a principal at other times! I am always given
the task of writing an operetta for the school party and
possibly help in directing and staging a play for the same
purpose. This varied experience has given flavor to my
work and has definitely enriched and influenced my life
style.

The problem in most schools in Egypt is mainly

administrative so much so that parents nowadays evaluate
a school by the efficiency of its managing staff. I share
them their views because even if you have a wonderful
building fully equipped, and an excellent teaching staff, it
will not help much if they lack a convenient atmosphere
that can nurture their talents and feed their energy.
Unfortunately, so many Egyptian schools lack aim,
independence, courage, synergy, clear vision, proper
assessment systems, coordination and flexibility, let alone
academically qualified educational leadership. This
accounts for the noticeable deterioration in students’
levels in all stages of education.

After accumulating such a wide range of experience, I

have lately thought of putting it all in action and do
something more authentic and professional. Believing that
I should not just rely on my experience, no matter how
varied and long it is. I believe I should be academically
qualified and professionally recognized. The Educational
Leadership Professional Educator Diploma will do the
job! I have had a brief idea about the program courses and
I think it will make a difference. I have a feeling that I
will have a new start when the AUC program starts. It is
generally known that leadership has become a science as
well as an art that cannot be acquired just through years of
experience. I know well that academic study is a must to
understand one’s job and see things in their right
proportions. I strongly believe in team work and
coordination conducted by aware and academically
qualified leaders to maximize the students’ output which
is the ultimate target of the whole educational process.
Besides, I think continuous improvement based on proper
evaluation will enhance performance and ensure quality
education.
