School Council Message – David Lee

What will it take to make a change?

Hello Mount View Community,

This week, there were a number of issues raised to the School Council which resulted in some constructive discussion
and next steps. I'd like to acknowledge those parents for their courage and initiative to voice their concerns in an open
forum - it is a great way to facilitate two-way communication and continuous improvement.

We also went on to reflect on some of the achievements that made our hearts jump with joy - from all the big events
like the carnival, concert, to the amazing achievements from the JSC.

However, it was still very evident there are major concerns that persist in our school. After all the continued messaging
and reinforcement about what is acceptable road behaviour, it is really disheartening and alarming to see these
reckless and illegal actions, not to mention abusive behaviour towards other parents and teachers.

One of the key IB principles our children are striving to be every day is being Caring.

What message are we sending with this kind of behaviour? What will happen the next time our children encounter their
own a disagreement or conflict?

I sincerely hope this message resonates with many of you, because until there is significant change, this will constantly
cause stress and put lives at risk.

Best regards,

David Lee

Carnival Success

Last week we celebrated yet another successful community event with our Annual Twilight Carnival providing fun and
entertainment for our families and the wider community.

From the Carnival Committee’s perspective the event was an absolute success. Prior to the Carnival our intention was
to deliver a stress free, engaging and enjoyable event for community members of all ages. With the increased number
of rides, we significantly reduced cues, with an enhanced Cultural Food Stall we added diversity of food, with a new
layout we added atmosphere and by drawing upon our existing infrastructure our event was a simple logistical
endeavour.

Although not the prime objective, it is with great sense of achievement that we can report our event raised in excess
of $25,000; money that will now be put towards the funding of our new playground facilities.

There were some significant contributors who ensured the success of various aspects of the event. Thank you to each
and every one of you, particularly our Carnival Committee who contributed so much to the success of the event.

We also had significant support from our major sponsors:

Principal Appointment Alison Rees

Congratulations to Alison Rees who has been appointed to the position of Principal at Templestowe Valley Primary
School. We congratulate Alison on this well-deserved promotion and commend her for years of dedication to our
school. Alison will be working away from MVPS for the next few weeks, returning for the final week of the school year
to celebrate her time at our school. Alison will begin her new role in 2019.

Facilities Update

As announced in recent newsletters our outdoor facilities are undergoing a major facelift. It is with great excitement
that we share updates on progress.

This week we signed off on the final design and installation of our new playground located on the southern section of
the Walden Sports Field. It is expected that the playground will be fully operational on day one of the 2019 school
year.

Further to this we have also began

receiving tenders associated to the
$200,000 Government Grant we
received as a result of PE teacher
Merryn Ashcroft’s visionary
thinking. Our installation will
consist of synthetic surface with 3
mini Basketball/Netball & Hot Shots
Tennis courts. The basketball rings
will be able to rotate with netball
rings being adjustable.

Student Behaviour Management @ MVPS
Recently concerns have been raised within our community about behaviour incidents happening
at our school. As a school we take behavioural issues seriously and have the wellbeing and welfare
of our students as a priority.

Whole School Transition ‘STEP UP’

This week all our students had the opportunity to experience their 2019 year level by participating
in our STEP UP transition program. Students were able to learn and understand the routines and
practices of the setting they are transisitoning into for 2019. Our aim is for students to be familiar
with their new environment, teachers and peers. This was the first session of 4 rotations where
students were in House colour groups and the classroom teachers organised activities that were
relevant for their particular year level.

Coping well and adjusting to changes brought about by transition form year to year is important,
as reseach indicates that a successful start to school each year is associated with future school
success and academic achievement (2011, Davies et al). It has also been associated with more
stable peer relationships, betteer behavioural and emotional outcomes, and better school
attendence.

Our goal for the STEP UP transition program is for the students to:

• experience continuity of learning

• feel positive about themselves as learners

• display dispositions for learning

• have a positive relationship with educators and other students

• feel safe, secure and supported at school

• display social and emotional resilience

• feel a sense of belonging

Here is a photo of our Year 6 students listening to Ex Mount View students who are currently
attending Glen Waverley Seconday college in Year 7. Thank you to Sandani, Caitlin, Jin & Nathan
who addressed the students with an extensive presentation outlining what it was like go to high
school. Topics included uniform expectations, getting lost, detention and lockers.

Get involved in the School Banking program

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young

Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children
who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking
earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting
rewards.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a
Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student
as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students
who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2018
School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit
commbank.com.au/schoolbanking.
Thank you for supporting the School Banking program and remember,
School Banking day is every Monday morning.
Please note that the last school banking day for 2018 will be Monday 10th December and any
children wanting to redeem their rewards, their last day for that will be Monday 12th November, to
give time for the rewards to come and be distributed.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE CANTEEN

The last day to order a lunch order from the canteen
this year is Wednesday 19 December.
The canteen will reopen on Thursday 31 January 2019.

FOOD FOR FAMILIES APPEAL

Mount View Primary School has registered to participate in the 2018
Food for Families Appeal which is organised by the Wesley Mission in
conjunction with the Leader Newspaper group. During the last twenty
years, community support for this appeal has been tremendous and the
Wesley Mission has highlighted the Mount View community as a very
caring and generous group.

The aim of the appeal is for students and their families to donate one or
more items of non-perishable grocery products or toiletries in an effort to ensure that homeless families,
individuals and people in need are supported, particularly over the Christmas period.

The school has set aside the period from the 26 th November– 7th December (two weeks only) to conduct the
appeal. We ask that during this time family give consideration to donating one or more grocery items for such
a worthwhile cause.

Students are requested to take the grocery items to their classrooms first to encourage others to participate in
the appeal. The grocery items will then be sent to the office for storage during the time of the appeal before
being collected by representatives from the Wesley Mission. Please ensure that any grocery items donated
have current used by dates.

More information about this appeal will be sent to all families via Compass over the next week.

Giving Tree Appeal - Supporting Children

at Christmas
- Salvation Army
Another appeal for the year is a very special one. Each class raises money in order to purchase gifts and toys
for children in need. The Salvation Army distributes these over the Christmas period.

We invite all the students in the school to donate a gold coin so that each class could purchase two age-
appropriate presents, one for a boy and one for a girl. If each class was to raise approximately $40.00, then
two presents could be purchased to make Christmas a more joyful time for many families.

With over eighty presents purchased by the school and placed beneath the “Giving Tree”, we will then ask
for a representative from the Salvation Army to accept the gifts from each class at the school’s assembly
on Monday December 10th at 2:40pm.

Information about this appeal has been sent to families via compass and from the discussions that students
will be having in class. Please help us to make Christmas a special time for children in need.
