Our vision is implemented through a greater strategic plan that starts

with the cultivation of forestry in a sustainable way and then the

production of boat building specific timber, as in ancient times
according to the directions that we have through the ancient book of
Theofrastos “Enquiry into Plants” 370BC-287 BC in order to be able
to construct these types of sailboats that were used to transport
goods between the islands of the Hellenic Archipelagos. These
products were organic and natural as there was no other way at that
time. These products helped the local communities to be autonomous
and self-sufficient having their own products. However, with
commerce there was an exchange of ideas and culture

In order to implement our strategic plan, with its purpose which is

charitable, cultural, historic, artistic and educational and prove that
in modern times these boats of ancient descent, can sail efficiently
the Hellenic Archipelago.
One key step was to construct “Medon Ploioni”, which it’s an exact
replica of a 1800 sailboat. A characterized type of vessel called
"Tserniki" with a "sakoleva" rigging (a square sail held spread by a
diagonal antenna in a relatively small mast), according to the plans
and design of Admiral Paris "Greek Sakkoleva-1835", the design,
which refers to this particular vessell’s hull and rigging. The earliest
depictions of the rigging of sakolevas found on tombstones and reliefs
date from the 1st to the 3rd century, in Italy and Greece. These boats
were extremely fast and could easily handle the rough and rapidly
changing unpredictable Aegean and eastern Mediterranean weather.
Carrying light cargo and mainly used for smuggling or piracy, later
on as sponge diving boats, very rarely for fishing. This type of boat
disappeared by the end of WWII. These boats were, in length, from
9m to 19m, but usually 12 to 14m.

The experimental reconstruction of this boat has been a gargantuan

effort since its reincarnation includes πρωτόλεια non-published
academic research and studies. The study of the design and the
construction has been carried out by Nicholas Vlavianos and the
shipwright team under his direction and supervision.

However, the project of the construction was initiated almost 20

years ago as personal challenge of Nikolas Vlavianos. He started

a row, consuming personal funds, energy and resources. When

maintained and traveled to the ancient routes.

Our vision has cultural implications, as maritime heritage that is kept

alive and preserved in time. Furthermore, rescue and dissemination
of our shipbuilding and naval art, which is derived from the depths of
our history. The activity we propose is environmentally compatible,
since the ships we are utilizing are sailboats, have zero carbon
footprint and do not burden the environment.

Our vision is sustainable, as we transport naturally grown organic

products, in small-scale and create jobs across the country.
In addition, the existence and sailing of these traditional sailboats,
enriches the story telling the touristic narrative of Greece, as proven
pieces of maritime history, tested in time.

Finally, our vision is to spread the idea that such vessels can stay
functional so that a single individual or group of people who want to
rescue a traditional wooden sailboat through our model can do it with
the lowest possible financial contribution on their part.
