Husn akhlaq Importance of good Character

Abu Hurairah narrated that The Messenger of Allah said:

“The most complete of the believers in faith, is the one with the best character
among them. And the best of you are those who are best to your women.” [Vol. 1,
Book 7, Hadith 1162 Graded Hasan]
Moral character is something we should be weary of. Our faith and character have
a direct connection. Allah has asked us to do the acts of worship so that we are
reminded of Him and we become good in our character.
This means our Shahada, our Salah and other pillar should make us bond a strong
bond with Allah. It should help us bring fear of Allah so that we do not do it. We
should think, how can a believer who stand sincerely in front of Allah for prayer,
praises Him and then asks dua(supplication) from Him ask Him to save him from
hell fire and give him paradise and after finishing the Salah turns to sin evil and
wicked acts. He steals, he speaks bad about people(backbite), he breaks promise
and he lies. This means he is not praying sincerely and he does not fear Allah as he
should.

Recite (O Muhammad SAW) what has been revealed to you of the Book (the
Qur'ân), and perform As-Salât (Iqamât¬as¬Salât). Verily, As-Salât (the prayer)
prevents from Al-Fahshâ' (i.e. great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse)
and Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil wicked deed)[]
and the remembering[] (praising) of (you by) Allâh (in front of the angels) is
greater indeed [than your remembering (praising) of Allâh in prayers. And Allâh
knows what you do. (Surah Ankaboot 29:45)
Our Role Model:
In order to know what comprises good character we should have a role model. We
cannot have description of good character only written in books and passed down
to us we have to have a person who lives by it. A person who actually faces the real
life and still holds on to good morals, he deserves to be followed. This was our
Prophet. He is affirmed in the Quran to be followed and his character is also a
sunnah we should follow.

Indeed you have an exalted standard of character.Surah Qalam 28: 3
He was very considerate to his companions he treated them well. In an authentic
hadeeth Amr ibn Al aas thought that he was the most beloved companion to
Prophet and asked him who was most beloved to him to which he replied Aisha
and then he asked from men and he said her father and the he mentioned many
other companions. It shows how well the prophet treated his companions, making
him think that he is the most beloved to him.

Generosity and magnanimity

In Islam we earn for our livelihood and the remaining is given to those poor and
needy below us. The wealth we have is bestowed to us by Allah and it is a test of
our kindness and generosity. Greed removes kindness and mercy from our heart.
Spending from what Allah has given makes us realize and sympathize with the
poor and bring humility. The companions of the prophet ‫ ﷺ‬would give all of their
wealth for the sake of Allah and leave with nothing for themselves and families
except Allah and His messenger. We think our wealth decreases by spending but
Allah is the one who spends on those who spend for His sake.
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said that:
He heard the Prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬said: "There were three men among the Banu Israel, one
leper, one bald and one blind. Allah wanted to test them. He therefore, sent to them
an angel who came to the leper and asked him what he would like best. He replied:
"A good colour, a good skin and to be rid of what makes me loathsome to people".
He (the angel) rubbed him and his loathsomeness vanished and he was given a
good colour and a good skin. He then asked him what type of property he would
like best. The leper replied that he would like camels - [or perhaps he said cattle,
for Ishaq (one of the subnarrator of the Hadith) was uncertain, either said: 'Camels,'
or: 'Cattle']. He was given a pregnant she-camel. The angel invoked for Allah's
Blessing on it. The angel then went to the bald man and asked him what he would
like best and he replied: "Good hair and to be rid of what makes me loathsome to
people". The angel ran his hand over him and he was given good hair. He then
asked him what property he would like best. He replied that he would like cattle, so
he was given a pregnant cow. The angel invoked Allah's Blessing on it. The angel
then went to the blind man and asked him what he would like best, and he replied:
"I wish that Allah restore my sight to me so that I may see people." Thereupon the
angel ran his hand over him and Allah restored his sight. The angel then asked
what property he would like best. He replied that he would like sheep, so he was
given a pregnant ewe. Flocks and herds were produced for the three men, the first
having a valley full of camels, the second one, a valley full of cows and the third
one full of sheep. Then the angel came in the form of a leper, to the one who had
been a leper, and said: "I am a poor man and my resources have been exhausted in
my journey, and my only means of reaching my destination are dependent on Allah
and then on you, so I ask you by Him Who gave you the good colour, the good
skin and the property, for a camel by which I may get to my destination". He
replied: "I have many dues to pay." The angel then said: "I think I recognize you.
Were you not a leper whom people found loathsome and a poor man to whom
Allah gave property?" He replied: "I inherited this property through generations".
The angel said: "If you are telling a lie, may Allah return you to your former
condition". The angel went in the form of a bald man to the one who had been
bald, and said the same as he had said to the former and received a similar reply.
So he said: "If you are telling a lie, may Allah return you to your former
condition". The angel then went to the one who had been blind and said: "I am a
poor traveller and my resources have been exhausted in my journey. My only
means of reaching my destination are dependant on Allah and then on you, so I ask
you by Him Who restored your eyesight for a sheep by which I may get to the end
of my journey". He replied: "Yes, I was blind. Allah restored my eyesight, so take
what you wish and leave what you wish. I swear by Allah that I shall not argue
with you today to return anything you take, as I give it for Allah's sake". The angel
said: "Keep your property. You have all simply been put to a test, and Allah is
pleased with you and displeased with both of your companions".

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬as saying that Allah, the Most Blessed
and High, said:
O son of Adam, spend. I will spend on you. The right hand of Allah is full and
overflowing and in nothing would diminish it, by overspending day and night.

During the time of tabuk Umar radhi Allahu anhu prepared to donate half of his
wealth for sake of Allah and he presented it to the prophet ‫ ﷺ‬and he found that
Abu bakr had already spent all of his wealth for the sake of Allah leaving his
family in the care of none but Allah.
Charity is one of the ways for keeping hell-fire away from us. Each one of us have
some capacity of good deeds, so the one who has wealth should spend for sake of
Allah to purify his soul before it is lost or squandered in useless things of this
dunya.
'Adi bin Hatim (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "Protect yourself from Hell-fire even by giving a
piece of date as charity."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Aisha radiallahu anha gave all she had for a place in charity. The messenger of
Allah ‫ ﷺ‬asked her “O Aisha what have you left behind?” and she replied “ O
Allah I have left such and such amount for us” to which Messenger of Allah said, “
No oh Aisha what you have given away is yours(in akhirah) and what you have left
behind is that which will be gone and consumed ( this dunya)”

Truthfulness and Honesty

Truthfulness is a quality even a Non-Muslim loves. Everyone loves truthfulness to
be told to themselves even if they don’t speak the truth. In Islam truthfulness is a
duty and lie is a great sin. A person who lies is written with Allah as a liar;
whereas a person who tells the truth is written with Allah as a truthful person.

‘Abd Allah (b. Mas’ud) reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him)
as saying :
Avoid falsehood, for falsehood leads to wickedness, and wickedness to hell; and if
a man continues to speak falsehood and makes falsehood his object, he will be
recorded in Allah’s presence as a great liar. And adhere to truth, for truth leads to
good deeds, and good deeds lead to paradise. If a man continues to speak the truth
and makes truth his object, he will be recorded in Allah’s presence as eminently
truthful. [Sunan Abi Dawud 4989, Sahih (Al-Albani)]
In day to day life we face many situations where Shaytaan tells us to lie.
However, lies only brings more problems, and telling the truth only avoids many
problems. By lying we may escape a few problems, but with telling the truth we
escape all the lies we have to tell in future to cover up the first lie. Lying is such an
evil sin that Allah’s messenger ‫ ﷺ‬forbade lying even if it be in a joke or a ‘white
lie’ except in some situations.

Hasan (Al-Albani)]
Islam gives utmost importance to honesty. Honesty in who we are and how we deal
with people. It should be a character of every Muslim. It is a part of eman. It is
part of honesty to tell truth about oneself in places of work, college and studies.
We may get a seat in a famous college if we lie and show a fake degree, but this is
with the displeasure of Allah and dishonesty. We can expand our business by lies
and fake buying and selling , but it only by the displeasure of Allah. No matter how
much we try and lie to increase our wealth or get better education, what is written
for us will come and that which is not written will not come, but by dishonesty we
earn the sin.

Humbleness and meekness
Allah does not love arrogance and anyone who has arrogance even the weight of an
atom shall not enter paradise. Arrogance is to think too high of oneself and low of
others and show this behavior in manners, speech and behavior. Allah loves those
who are humble with oneself with others and even with the creation of Allah.

Allah does not like the arrogance nor the one who boasts of his status. The more we

Tawwakkul or reliance on Allah
A believer places all trust in Allah. He is arazzaq, wali and Ghani,He takes care of
all of us and feed the birds who go out empty stomachs at dawn and return full
stomachs during the dusk. Reliance or tawwakkul means to have complete faith that
if I obey Allah’s command Allah will provide for me, protect me and remove me
from evil. This was the tawakul of Hajar the wife of Ibrahim when she was alone in
the desert with her child ismail. She knoew this is the command of Allah and that
the hardship she is facing is kkahir for her and Allah will protect her, provide for her
and remove the difficulty. Allah helped her in ways she did not image, a spring from
the earth dug by an angel, a caravan to help them and take care of them- Allah sent
by Allah- the wali of the believers.

2. So when they have reached their prescribed time, then retain them with kindness
or separate them with kindness, and call to witness two men of justice from among
you, and give upright testimony for Allah. With that is admonished he who believes
in Allah and the latter day; and whoever is careful of (his duty to) Allah, He will
make for him an outlet,
3. And give him sustenance from whence he thinks not; and whoever trusts in Allah,
He is sufficient for him; surely Allah attains His purpose; Allah indeed has appointed
a measure for everything. Surah talaq 65:2-3
