Race Night Thank You Watton U3A End the Year With a Concert
A charity race night was held in memory of Stewart Dickson at
Thompson Community Hall on the 8th December 2018 and what a
fantastic night it was! Due to the incredible generosity of all our race-
goers and donations we were able to raise £1800 which will be split
between two charities, The Big C and The Watton Thursday Club. We
would like to thank all our local sponsors, Ward Gethin Archer, The
Italian Job, Sowerbys, Dutch Flower Parade, Adcock & Sons, Berwick
Jewellers, The Wayland News and M & C Talbot Builders. We would
also like to thank Pete and Sandra Merry from Babacos for the amazing
food served on the night. And finally we would like to thank everyone
who bought tickets and supported the event.
In November Graham Watts came to our
meeting to tell us the history of Dale Farm,
a 2 acre plant lover’s garden in Dereham.
Graham started out as a parks apprentice at
South on Sea then moving to Kew
Gardens, after which he went to Cambridge
as Parks Manager. He met his wife Sally,
who had trained as a florist, working at
Cambridge Parks dept.
In December 2006 they came to view Dale
Farm with the intention of buying a
property with a large garden. The garden
was what they were looking for with a
spring fed pond and on that visit Graham
went round the garden taking soil samples
in jam jars. Subsequently they moved in to
Dale Farm in 2007. First they needed to
clear most of the garden and the pond. This
work has resulted in a beautiful garden with
over 1000 plant species in planted borders
and waterside gardens, including a
collection of 110 species and varieties of
hydrangea. To help control the parrot
feather weed in the pond Graham
introduced some grass carp to the large
pond. Ultimately he wanted to support the
National Gardens Scheme and opened Dale
Farm to the public in 2010 in this scheme.
Dale Farm has raised over £65000 for NGS
between 2010 and 2018. Throughout the
talk Graham illustrated the stages of hard
work and the ultimate finished garden with
lots of photos. A marvellous talk giving our
members inspiration for our own gardens.
There was no speaker in December. On 30
November 29 U3A members went to
Richmond Park Golf Club for a delicious
Christmas lunch then on 5 December over
30 members enjoyed a Christmas party at
the Christian Community Centre with
entertainment by our very own Watton
3rdAgers Ukulele Group (pictured).
The speaker for January will be Julian Horn
with How, Why and Where Watton started.
The pub lunch groups will not be meeting
in January.

Hand Book Sales
Happy New Year to you all from
everyone involved in the Bookworm
sales. Our first one of 2019 will be on
Saturday 13th April, at Thompson
Community Hall, starting at 10am. As
well as a new selection of books for you
to browse, with no book costing more
than one pound, we’ll also have for sale
plants, filled tubs, and gardening
paraphernalia. The ever popular chocolate
tombola makes its reappearance too.
Refreshments including light lunches will
be available until 3.30, plus whole cakes
and bakes for you to take home. The sale
closes at 4pm.
If you have any spare plants, either indoor
or garden varieties, all donations will be
most welcome. Collection can be arranged,

We wish you all a Happy New Year
We have had a packed programme of
events in 2018, culminating last month in
our Friday Christmas Party. We enjoyed
hilarious entertainment with The West
End Waiters, exchanged gifts and cards
(in our usual entertaining way!) and
indulged ourselves with the huge
selection of savoury and sweet snacks
(and the odd glass or two!). On display
was our entry for the Shipdham Tree
Festival. The theme was “Peace in our
Time”, which members of the committee
interpreted (as only keen horticulturalists
can) with “Peas in our Thyme” with
home made decorations of pea pods,
doves and herbs. Money raised was for
the charity YANA (You Are Not Alone)
which offers support for farmers in crisis.
Time to look forward with a new
committee whose first innovation is to
bring forward our first event, the
members only Beetle Drive and Fish and
Chip Supper.
This is a hugely popular evening, so
make sure that you get your orders
placed. If you have not yet joined us,
this would be a great introduction to see
what £12.00 a year membership gets
you!

Watton Museum
What does 2019 have in store?
As we approach a New Year, the
excitement continues to grow around our
little town. We remain in forethought of
our townsfolk as they find new and
enticing appraisals for us to follow up.
Just recently, confirmed through
Gressenhall museum, we prepare a new
exhibit of eighteen worked flints which
includes weaponry! This will be on
display in our new bespoke cabinets
being built for the start of 2019. Another
recent acclimation comes from the
Second World War. A local family have
donated a 'Goldfish Club' membership
card! If you are like me and do not know
what this is; a membership card comes to
those who survive being shot down and
using the emergency dinghy! The card in
question comes from a family in Griston
and we are extremely grateful for this
acquisition.
It would be hard missed that this year
was the one hundred year anniversary of
the Armistice. What it also means is that
it has been one hundred years of the
Royal Air Force. With our little town
having such a strong history with the
RAF, a lot has happened in celebration.
As a result, we have had a donation in
the form of a model Spitfire from
Carbrooke school. This will be going on
display with a great thanks to our young
students for their hard work and hope
they are as proud of themselves as we are
pleased with the outcome. Thank you
Carbrooke school.
On the subject of our youngsters, our
rotational cabinet display will be
changing over in the New Year. We have
a rolling display to showcase various
different organisations in and around us.
January will see the Kids Club display
but also a Toys display with some
interesting and lovely exhibits of a
toymaker very close to the heart of
Watton Museum. Definitely something
we cannot wait to share with the public.
Our future rotations also include the likes
of the Women's Institute and Scoulton
History Club. This display changes
throughout the year, so there will be
something new to keep everyone coming
back to see what Watton people have
given their community!
Our position in the town and community
spirit grows on a daily basis and we are
always trying to build that enjoyment of
history for our town and give back. We
are always appreciative of the work and
efforts that our volunteers and trustees
put in for Watton to enjoy. We began by
being lottery funded but do rely on
public donations for our running costs, so
please, should you find yourself in
Watton, come and talk to us. See what
we have to offer and see what we have
for sale and ask us questions! Talk to us
about how you want to help and what
you can do for our wonderful museum,
but most importantly, have a very Happy
New Year!

Having just walked back from town in
the chill wind it was a sharp reminder
that we have reached that time of year
and by the time you read this article the
dawn of the year 2019 will have come
and gone. I now find myself thinking of
the new year ahead and 2018 that is
sadly so nearly passed and I like so many
of us will be yet another year older. I
would like to think that 2018 has been a
good year, our committee and several
non committee members have worked
hard to make WMS a success in various
ways and my thanks goes out to you all,
when I walk in to our hall on a Monday
morning and see some 20 or more
members socialising, playing cards or
pool, working in the workshop or our
garden area or just having a cuppa and a
chat I realise we must have done
something right. Thank you very much
Gentlemen, a good job well done!.
Sunday 9th December was our visit to
“St Marys Church”, West Tofts for a
Christmas service, to those of you who
don’t know “St Marys” it is on the
“Battle Area” and comes under the
umbrella of the Ministry Of Defence
who are kind enough to allow the church
to be used at important times during the
year. The church was full to capacity
(possibly up to 400 people) the service
was approximately 1 hour and was
followed by a glass of Mulled wine and a
mince pie outside in the surrounding
grounds, under marques, it was attended
by 34 WMS members, wives and friends,
and an enjoyable time was had by all.
Well that’s probably enough from me for
this year it just remains for me to remind
members of our opening and closing
times this Christmas as follows: We will
close for the festivities on *Wednesday
19th December at 1pm*, we will then re-
open on *Monday 31st December at
10am to 12pm* there after our times
will be back to normal.

Viking –
Rediscover the
Legend
Some of the most significant Anglo-Saxon and
Viking treasures ever discovered in Britain
will go on display together at Norwich Castle
Museum & Art Gallery from 9 February to 8
September 2019.
Featuring star objects from the British
Museum and Yorkshire Museum, Viking:
Rediscover the Legend will offer a fresh
perspective on how Vikings shaped many
aspects of life in Britain.
The exhibition will include the Anglo-Saxon
York Helmet, the most outstanding example
of its type to survive, as well as the most
significant Viking treasure ever found in the
UK – the Vale of York, Cuerdale and Bedale
Viking Hoards.
These finds will be shown alongside
highlights from Norwich Castle’s own
extensive collections, including items on
display for the first time, and will be
interpreted in new ways which challenge our
perceptions of what it means to be Viking.
Andrew Woods, Senior Curator at the
Yorkshire Museum, said: “This is a unique
opportunity to see some of the best Viking and
Anglian treasures in the UK displayed
together for the first time. It will feature stand
out loans from the British Museum and
Yorkshire Museum, combined with new
research and exciting displays. It will also be a
rare opportunity to see the most significant
Viking Hoards ever found in this country on
display together in the same venue.”
Maria Bojanowska, Dorset Foundation Head
of National Programmes at the British
Museum said “The British Museum is
delighted to be working in partnership with
the Yorkshire Museum on this exciting
exhibition. Viking: Rediscover the Legend
will shed new light on some of the most
significant Viking Hoards to be found in this
country. With the support of the Dorset
Foundation, we are able to tour the exhibition
to the University of Nottingham Museum, The
Atkinson, Southport and Norwich Castle
Museum, and share these stories with as many
people as possible across the UK.”
Tim Pestell, Senior Curator of Archaeology at
Norfolk Museums Service said: “Norwich
Castle is an ideal venue to host a show about
Vikings – Norwich itself bears traces of its
own history as an Anglo-Scandinavian town
and is positioned at the centre of an extensive
region well-known for its Viking heritage.
Extensive and important finds of Viking and
Anglo-Saxon material have been made
throughout Norfolk and the wider East
Anglian area, many of which are now in the
Norwich Castle archaeology collections. We
are thrilled to be working with the British
Museum and York Museums Trust to explore
the legend and legacy of the Vikings through
some of the most beautiful and important
Viking artefacts ever discovered in the UK.”
Cllr. John Ward, Chairman of the Norfolk
Joint Museums Committee, said “We are
delighted this fantastic exhibition is coming to
Norwich. It will build on the huge success of a
previous British Museum touring exhibition at
Norwich Castle, Roman Empire: Power &
People, which proved that there is a huge
appetite for high-quality archaeology
exhibitions. We look forward to Viking:
Rediscover the Legend bringing in visitors
from across Norfolk and the wider region and
attracting high numbers of school visits to
explore this powerful part of our local and
national story.”
The exhibition opened at the Yorkshire
Museum in May 2017 and has also visited the
University of Nottingham Museum and The
Atkinson, Southport. Norwich Castle is the
last chance to see this magnificent show and is
the only showing in the East of England.
Items from the Norwich Castle collections
going on display for the first in this exhibition
include a unique high-status gold lozenge
brooch from Attleborough, the Hingham
Hoard of four silver brooches and 23 silver
pennies of King Edmund, and two silver
pennies of King Æthelred, a mysterious East
Anglian ruler known only from this coinage.
In total 43 new and previously unseen items
from the Norwich Castle collections will be
included in the exhibition providing a
fascinating local perspective on this national
story.
The kingdom of East Anglia was conquered
by the Vikings in 869 when King Edmund was
martyred and then buried at Bury St Edmunds,
and became one of the principal areas of
Viking settlement in England. It is not known
exactly when Danish Vikings settled in
Norwich but it is likely to have been in the
late 880s. As well as the sometimes
spectacular finds from the period found in the
area, East Anglia’s Viking heritage lives on in
the survival of Viking place-names in the
region such as Scratby, Filby and Mautby.
Viking: Rediscover the Legend will explore
the complex interaction between the Anglo-
Saxon and Viking cultures at both a national
and local level.
The exhibition will be supported by an
extensive schools programme and events
programme including talks and Viking themed
holiday activities for the February half term
and Easter.
Norfolk Wildlife

In November we had a good turnout for Gemma
Walker’s very interesting talk on NWT’s new two
year project “Wildlife in Common”.
The aims of the project are to reconnect and
celebrate common lands with community led
solutions for improvement where needed.
Volunteers have been equipped to carry out survey
work, with some trained in historic recording.
Sixty commons are being targeted and five sites are
listed for historical research. NWT wish to make two
documentary films and develop circular walks
leaflets.
On Wednesday January 9th we are welcoming
Andrew Clarke from the North Norfolk Local
Group, to give a talk on
“Birds and Wildlife of
Antarctica”. Andrew
worked in Antarctica for 40
years and will speak on the
wildlife living there and
current efforts to preserve it.

Christian Community

Catty Remarks
According to most estimates, cats have been domesticated for about
10,000 years. In cosmic terms, that's a mere eye blink, but it was still
time enough for cats to embed themselves into our lives, our
language and if they're feeling chilly, our beds. In fact, the sheer
range of cat-related idioms in English and other tongues is
astonishing. Here are a few with meanings and origins and a liberal
sprinkling of guesswork.
Cat burglar. Meaning – a highly stealthy burglar who relies on
physical agility.
Origin – this phase comes from cats' outstanding natural athleticism
which they owe to such physical attributes as an unusually flexible
spine and shoulder blades that are attached with supple muscle rather
than rigid bone. The phrase was popularised by Alfred Hitchcock's
film To Catch a Thief (1955).
Catnap. Meaning – a short light sleep during the day.
Origin – this word comes from cats' tendency to sleep whenever they
can. On average, cats sleep for roughly 16 hours a day, which means
they spend about a third of their lives asleep. So by the time a cat is
nine, it's only been awake for three years! But, as anyone who's been
owned by a cat will know, their sleep is often light – which is why a
seemingly slumbering cat can magically appear at your feet at the
mere crinkle of a food packet.
Have kittens. Meaning – to be extremely upset or worried.
Origin – during the Middle Ages, a pregnant woman who was in
pain was thought to have been
cursed by a witch to have kittens
clawing inside her body instead of a
baby – a prospect, understandably,
that would make her distraught
(she's having kittens') Although this
ghastly myth sounds preposterous
to modern ears, it was taken
seriously for centuries: records as
late a 1654 show that a woman
appealed to a Scottish court for
permission t end her pregnancy
because of the 'cats in her bellie'.
Looked what the cat dragged in.
Meaning – an affectionate greeting
for an unexpected or overdue
visitor, sometimes suggesting a
bedraggled appearance.
Origin – its not uncommon for
domestic cats to bring home dead
prey in their mouths, by which time
the prey is usually the worse for
wear. Why cats do this we can't be
sure. One longstanding theory is
that it's a gift – a cat's way of
expressing loyalty or gratitude to its
owners. But more recently a less
flattering theory has emerged: given that
your cat probably never sees you
catching anything, it's concluded that
you're a useless hunter and is trying to
help you out with a tasty snack. It's the
thought that counts. Grilled shrew
anyone?
Pussyfoot around. Meaning – to behave
In your garden

A very happy and healthy New Year to
you all. I hope your Christmas was all
you hoped for and you have now got over
the hangover and weight gain. These two
last can be dealt with by visiting that
outdoor space near the house. A little
light digging anyone? Maybe not but if it
snows it will probably be necessary to
shovel some of that away from paths.
That brings on the main word for January:
“don’t”. Don’t step on frosty grass. Don’t
step on anything covered in the white
stuff. Don’t wander carelessly on slippery
paving – take a little exercise and de-
grease it.
Most of what can be done in January is
indoors. Clean up the tools and put them
away if you didn’t do this in autumn (no I
didn’t either), wash pots and trays ready
for seed sowing in spring. Sow sweet
peas if you are getting a bit stir-crazy and
want something to do that says
‘gardening’. When Monty Don sowed
sweet peas a couple of years ago he started
some in autumn, some in January and the
rest in spring. If I remember rightly the
autumn and January sowings did better
than the spring ones. That’s enough of
indoor/outdoor things to do as these
normally take place in the shed or the
garage, neither place being comfortably
heated. So indoors proper. If you can
bear it, have a look round the garden see
what is growing, flowering or generally
looking good. If you are missing out then
try and visit an open garden in the area to
see what’s really on offer. If that’s not
possible take a gentle stroll round the area
to see what the neighbours have on show.
Start to plan both for this year and next
winter and cuddle the catalogues round the
fire. If you grow veg you may already
have your seeds with seed potatoes
chitting merrily. If you want to grow veg
and are not sure about these things buy
some potato growing sacks as these
normally come from the seedsmen with
enough potatoes to go in them and full
instructions. I can pretty much guarantee
this will either have you hooked or from
here on this column will be in the bin as
soon as it arrives.
Trees with fancy bark do well in January:
very cautiously or indecisively.
Origin – although this phrase is meant as
a criticism, it derives from the
immaculate care and caution that cats
often show when walking which allows
them say, to negotiate a cluttered window
sill without knocking over any ornaments
(or only rarely). Their extraordinary
sense of balance also plays a part. This
Prunus serrula or Tibetan cherry has
beautiful shiny bark but takes ages to get to
the point where the bark is at its best and is
not suitable for a small garden. Acers look
pretty good in winter, Acer Griseum is the
paperbark maple and although slow
growing can reach 15 x 12ft so it is said to
be suitable for small gardens but prefers
company and a woodland setting which
might rule it out for small gardens. Silver
birch with its pure white bark is popular and
I have long wanted to plant one and coppice
it to three stems. Grown like this it is
stunning but does require a bit of room.
Perhaps a little more down to earth for the
small garden might be bamboo. Yes you
did read that right but careful attention to
what’s on offer is a must. The clump
formers are best with those having thick
coloured stems the best of these.
Phyllostachys is the main part of the name
with aurea (yellow stems) nigra (black
stems) and aureosulcata f. aureocaulis is
lovely with golden/orange canes. These
clump formers can be further restricted by
growing in pots or tubs. To make the stems
even more outstanding trim off all the side
shoots to leave the top few feet with
foliage.
Coming a little further down to earth, how
about dogwoods? Popular in municipal
and supermarket carparks these can be
overlooked as dowdy. So they will be if
left to their own devices. They will
produce wonderful coloured stems if
pruned hard in spring. The first bit of the
name is ‘cornus’ after that you get alba
siberica, which is the ever-popular red,
despite the rule that ‘alba’ normally means
white. Then there’s sanguinea ‘Midwinter
Fire’ with orange and pink stems that look
like flames and a black version whose
name escapes me. They are all very
tolerant of soil conditions but must have
the oldest stems cut out at the end of
winter as the new ones will have the
brightest bark next winter. Carpark
owners please take note. A last species
with coloured stems is the willow. Salix
alba var. vitellina and its relatives have
scarlet, pewter/purple and buff. The
vitellina is vigorous and is useful if you
want to make baskets or screens. Kept
well pruned to make the most of the
coloured stems these willows will thrive in
the same places as dogwoods including
clay and wet.

develops about 10 – 12 weeks after birth.

That’s quite enough on bark, let’s look at
flowers. There is quite a selection of
flowering trees and shrubs, most of which
have scented flowers. One of the most
popular is viburnum bodnantese ‘Dawn’
semi evergreen with pink buds in clusters
that sit until the weather warms up a little
then open to beautifully scented blooms.
The scent will fill quite an area on a mild,
still day so it’s as well to make sure you
like it. It will take a lot of pruning and
goes on and on through autumn and
winter. Mahonias have yellow flowers in
a shuttlecock shape with a good scent.
The drawback with this species (if it’s in
the wrong place) is the leaves as they are
sharp. Witch hazel flowers on bare stems
and have a citrussy scent. The old
favourite ‘Pallida’ has pale yellow flowers
but now there are more hybrids,
particularly ‘Jelena’ with coppery orange
and ‘Diane’ rich red. They are slow
growing to 10x10ft but can be grown in
containers. In autumn the leaves match
the colour of the flowers. What a neat
trick. There is a winter-flowering
honeysuckle, fragrantissima being one
variety with tiny white flowers and strong
scent. The flowers are miniature versions
of the climbing honeysuckle.
Further down to the ground we have iris
unguicularis, the Algerian iris. This will
flower from now until spring, even
pushing up through snow. Should we get
snow it’s best to cut the flowers in bud as
they will last better in a vase. Hellebores
are starting to come into their own – plant
near a path so you can turn the flowers up
to see the spots and splodges inside.
There are now varieties with upturned
flowers but I haven’t seen these offered
much. I suppose their popularity will
increase! We have winter flowering
pansies and violas, crocus, cyclamen and
the good old snowdrops coming into their
own this month and of course there is a
clematis for this month ‘Freckles’ with
white flowers, speckled maroon inside.
There really is a wonderful choice to pep
up the garden this month and most of the
flowers will keep going through February
so you get your money’s worth.
You may have noticed I have not
suggested things to do for once. Take a
rest and plan but, unless the ground is
covered in snow, there they will be so
keep weeding.

Watton Society's November 'Film Night;
presented by Philip Slater, was a night of mixed
entertainment, from nostalgia to comedy. A
weekend with photographers from Thetford
filming their visit. A vicar and projectionist
getting it wrong and how to do it properly,
(surprise, surprise). A cartoon of 101
Dalmatians, Pongo finding a mate, and his
master finding a girlfriend, very funny. A day in
the life of an English Electric Lightning test
pilot.
Winston Churchill's properties, inside and out,
and the herring fleet in Yarmouth. Just some of
the evenings entertainment, plus popcorn at the
interval. The Society;s next meeting is on
Wednesday 16th January when we are visiting
the Watton Museum. at an earlier time of
7.30pm. In the meantime a very Happy
Christmas and good health in 2019 to one and
all, and we look forward to seeing you all in
January.

Neighbourhood
Plan Update
Shaping the future of Saham Toney!
A presentation on the status of the Saham Toney
Neighbourhood Plan was held on 7th December
to provide more information on the Site
Allocations. In addition, there was an update on
the status of the Village Character Assessment,
the Sensitivity Analysis and the Design Guide,
all of which are being developed by a landscape
consultant. We had hoped that our local MP,
George Freeman would be at the presentation
but events in Westminster prevented that
happening.

All of the proposed site will be reviewed for
suitability for development by an independent
organisation and that review is due to be
completed by 27th March 2019.

With Cllr Tina Kiddell
As you read this, we will be heading into a
new year full of hope and new resolutions. In
fact, as I write this we are just getting back to
normal after the mad few weeks leading up to
the festive market, which was a great success,
with so many people in town. Many thanks to
Lings for making my ride through town
extremely memorable, wow, what amazing
bikes, it’s got my appetite going for getting
back on to two wheels.
Ever since I joined the council, I have had a
bee in my bonnet about getting things for the
youth in our town. Having got two 17-year
olds whom have grown up in this town, I
know first hand at the lack of youth provision
there is for this generation. Im pleased to
report that we are in talks with the youth
advisory board to hopefully bring together
some ideas that will finally bring together
some ideas that we can bring to fruition.
Watch this space.
The neighbourhood plan led by Cllr Jane
Fountain and aided by Cllr Pat Warwick has
shown concrete evidence and proof of need to
hopefully secure some funding for projects
that im hoping to push forward. This is with
what we have already gathered by talking to
people. The neighbourhood plan questionnaire
will be landing on your mats in the very near
future and it will be your chance to have your
say on how you would like to see your town
grow in the future. Without local knowledge,
wants, and grips and groans, we at the council
can not move things forward without your
input, and as ive explained, the powers that be,
in charge of funding etc, need to see evidence
of want. So, this is our time to put our
thoughts down so please fill out the
questionnaire.
I am forever reminded how much better things
work in town when we have joined up thinking,
and talk to each other, and it is this that
prompted me to ask George Freeman if he could
help facilitate a meeting with some of Watton’s
business men and women to come together
around the table and share ideas, and to
hopefully bring some energy to areas that need
attention. I am calling it WATTON WORKING
TOGETHER. It is my belief that rather than
bemoan the state of our town, we should work
together and get things done ourselves.
Again, watch this space, I will update you all on
all developments.
With the new year we will be heading to our
local town elections in May. This is your chance
to put yourself forward to run for your town.
You need to live or work within a three-mile
radius of town and to be able to dedicate some
time to bring our projects to fruition. Details will
be available nearer the time from Breckland
Offices. Rest assured in the meantime, your
current council is working very hard to bring our
town towards a much brighter future. We will
continue to work for as long as you keep us in
office, after all it is your votes that put us in
council, and it is you that we work tirelessly for.

We started of the festive season in good cheer
with plenty of atmosphere at Broom Hall in
the newly refurbished Chestnut Function
Room.
We welcomed our guest speaker, Kathy Webb
from Palm & Sole in the Norwich Lanes, who
creates, develops and blends aromatherapy
products. She also holds workshops and
experience events which celebrate how unique
each person is.
Kathy has spent time as an aromatherapist,
including time at the Big C. She was
subsequently asked to make products for
clients, from which her current business
emerged. Much re-balancing can be helped
with aromatherapy, with the products to
improve skin, body and mind.
Kathy was thrilled to have won three awards
for her products last year.
A range of Palm and Sole products were
available to try and purchase, along with make
-up from House of Colour, Christmas cards
from EACH and ponchos and wraps from
Country Meadow Makes.
Our Spring lunch will be on Wednesday 20
March when we welcome Watton’s Town
Mayor Tina Kiddell as our guest speaker and
looking onwards to our Summer event which
is Afternoon Tea at College Farm Thompson
on Thursday 20 June.
Wayland Women in Business is a networking
group for ladies from all walks of life, whether

headache and muscle tension while
improving concentration, digestion and
metabolism. There are several ways to
induce relaxation alongside slow, deep
breathing; listening to soothing music, a
guided relaxation or imagery, focusing
attention on things that are happening right
now, in the present moment rather than
dwelling on the past or future and
sometimes it can be a long soak in the bath!

my studio in the Wayland Area of Norfolk.

We were lucky with the weather
on Sunday 25th November: there
were threatening skies but we
managed to set up and lay out our
bottle straw draw stall on the
town’s Christmas Market in time
for what turned out to be an almost
non-stop stream of customers for
over three hours from before the
official start to after the Christmas
Lights switch-on. Fortunately the
generosity of our members meant
that we did not run out of goodies
until the last minute. In that time
we reckon to have sold some 2,500
straw, attracting nearly 400
winners of everything from a liter
of whisky to a sachet of orange juice. First
time organiser was Michael Haythorpe and
on duty for the early session were Mike
Gicquel & Martin Anscombe (see pic),
soon to be joined by Paul Weatherill (one
way to keep warm in Yogi Bear costume)
who rejoined us after a stint of driving
Father Christmas up and down the High
Street in his Jeep to the delight of the
gathering throngs. A rota of other
Rotarians sold straws for the numbered
prizes during the afternoon, and we are
pleased to report a profit of £376.00 was
eventually paid into our charity trust fund
account via Lloyds Mobile Bank. We find
it odd that the banks are limiting the
number of bags of cash that can be paid in
at any one time - no thought has been
given to the fact that such community and
other charitable events generate a lot of
cash for small charitable organisations.
We have spoken of RotaBoards previously
in this column. Originally, their purpose
was specifically to show off children’s’
schoolwork in places other than their
schools, where, by and large, the general
public does not get to see them. We have a
number of display venues, such as the
Queens Hall and the Sports Centre, and we
would like to hear from any other pubic
access venues that may like to display a
board or two. More importantly, because
of the pressures on schools - teachers’ time
etc - not all schools are able to regularly
produce and update a board of children’s
work, so we are considering offering
boards to other organisations who may
wish to advertise their activities. Anyone
wishing to hire a board or can offer a
display space is invited to contact our

Aviation Society
Whenever a club holds an annual general
meeting it is quite common to assume that
the event will be received with less
enthusiasm than normal but, not on this
occasion; the West Norfolk Aviation
Society and its members enjoyed an
evening in the spirit of what would
normally be regarded as a party, with food
and liquor being supplied by our host and
hostess at the Mundford Bowls Club.
Entertainment was provided by a comedy
double act comprising the Chairman, Chris
Halliday, and the proxy secretary, David
Allen.
A motion to re-elect all current officers
was proposed and seconded. To confirm
solidarity, the chairman light-heartedly
bestowed upon the worthy, hand crafted
medals he had constructed himself from
non-negotiable UK currency.
Fred Miller, our technical officer, proposed
the introduction of a logo to help others
identify our organisation; this could be
used as a transfer to emblazon various
garments we might wish to adorn. The
motion was carried and new member,
Mem Memet, a graphics designer, agreed
to undertake the assignment.
David Tyler, our treasurer, reported that
we had a healthy set of accounts and it was
agreed by all that the current annual club
subscription of £10 per member should
stand for the coming year. It would appear
that this is not a deterrent to prospective
recruits especially when the buffet each
month is all inclusive. There is no
restriction on membership and it’s
particularly nice to welcome a growing
number of lady members and, lady
speakers too.
After the meeting ended the rest of the
evening was devoted to a video
presentation, courtesy of Fred Miller and
projectionist Andrew Barnes. This was
entitled ‘The Gimli Glider'. This aeroplane
turned out to be a Canadian B767 airliner
which ran out of fuel at 40,000ft and
managed to land without loss of life on a
disused airstrip actively being used for car
racing events. The air accident report
claimed that it was not pilot error or an
aircraft fault but a situation brought about
by lack of training i.e. an administration
blunder; confusion over whether the fuel
was measured in gallons or litres. Steve de
Rouke, long standing member and retired
airline pilot, then took the floor and spoke
of similar experiences he had encountered
himself.
At the end of the evening the secretary
thanked the chairman for executing his
duties so well and in return the chairman
thanked the secretary for having been
responsible for ‘holding the club together’
during the last twenty five years. In
recognition of this David was presented
with his favourite tipple, a bottle of
Dalwhinnie malt whiskey together with a
little light reading material; 12kgs worth of
vintage aviation history.
Chris went on to thank our charming hosts,
Val and Len, for their contribution and
participation throughout the year and,
likewise, were presented with tokens of
our gratitude.

Little Acorns which runs from the Youth
& Community Centre in Harvey Street,
Watton will be closing its doors for the
final time on Tuesday 18th December
2018. Angie and I have been running Little
Acorns since January 2003 and have seen
many children come through the doors.
We would like to thank everyone who has
supported us over the years and helped to
keep us open. Unfortunately due to lack of
children and not being sustainable
anymore, we had to make the very hard
decision to close.
We will be having a sale of all our
equipment and resources at the Youth &
Community Centre, Watton on Saturday

Christmas
Preparations
When did your preparations for Christmas
begin? Inner Wheel ladies started their Club
preparations on November 6th when they
gathered at member Brenda's home for the
first of five Tuesday rehearsals for our
Christmas Concert. The chosen words had
been typed out, the music gathered and June
primed to get us singing. Starting on the right
note, breathing in the right place and,
crucially, to look as if we know what we are
doing……….well, we just hope it will be
OK on the day!
Then it was time to move on to member,
Pam's home on November 19th to pack the
large pile of assorted gifts collected by
members to be wrapped and sold as Pretty
Parcels at the Town Festive Market on
November 25th. Thankfully it was a fine and
almost sunny afternoon and the town was
packed. The stall proved very popular and
our ladies were kept very busy, we hope all
the children and the mums and dads enjoyed
their parcels. The sum of £391.70 was raised
which will be added to our charity funds.
Westfield
Umbrellas
Unfortunately Westfield School were
unable to enter into the parade of
decorated umbrellas in the Town
Carnival Parade in September.
However they had purchased an
umbrella for each of their 10 classes
which are now wonderfully hanging in
the school hall having been decorated
beautifully by the pupils. Their efforts
are pictured (right) and are well worth

The next event, this time on a truly horrible,
wet, windy and grey morning was the Coffee
Morning in the Queens Hall on Saturday,
December 1st. Despite the weather a number
of people turned up and the refreshments and
the raffle were enjoyed by those who had
braved the elements. As a result we were
able to make a £200. donation to the Queens
Hall Maintenance Fund. We are all grateful
to have our Queens Hall so beautifully cared
for.
On the same evening, President Val attended
the Thursday Club Christmas Party taking
chocolates kindly donated by one of our club
members. We are always pleased to support
the work of this splendid club.
Then, on December 12th it was time for
THE CONCERT. The Hall decorations were
splendid and the flower arrangements done
by member Bunty, looked stunning. The
ladies donned their black and red, the West
End Waiters added sparkly red ties to their
usual outfits and we were ready (picture).
We had chosen the theme of Peace and
Goodwill this year and the selection of
readings, poems and songs reflected this. The
hall was packed and people enjoyed the
concert and then tucked in to lunch of a
a viewing if you are able.
The designs for the Umbrella
decorations was either a book theme
e.g Elmer the elephant in the picture,
or original design by the pupils. The
art work in all of them is wonderful
and the pupils are to be
congratulated. Each class is named
after a particular animal.
The Umbrella Festival was organised
by the Watton & District Rotary Club
and it has been decided to repeat the
event at next year's Town Carnival.

and the raffle did well and one very lucky
lady was presented with the first prize of a
beautiful hamper by our town Mayor,
Councillor Tina Kiddell.
This event raised the wonderful sum of £771
(I reported on the Christmas donations to
charities we have already made in the last
edition of the Wayland News).
We do sincerely thank the citizens of Watton
who attend our events and help us to make
them such happy and successful occasions.
The ladies wound up this very busy period
with their own Christmas party at member,
Jenny's home on December13th. Time to eat,
drink and be merry amongst friends.
As we say Happy Christmas to each other
may we also wish all our friends in Watton a
very Happy Christmas and New Year too.
P.S. At the beginning of January Mullengers
in Watton High Street will have tickets for
our next two events. Our Annual Barn Dance
on February 15th and the first of our
lunchtime concerts on Wednesday,
February27th. We hope to see you there!
