EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Ashtakavargha system is devised as a numerical scheme of interpretation that lets us easily
see a snapshot assessment of the strength of a house through a unique point system. The
Ashtakavargha system is a method of calculating the powers of the planets relative to each
other. Therefore, it can be used in any chart i.e. all the divisional charts, along with Chalita
Bhava charts (diurnal charts) and even with Horary Astrology. This system also gives the
power of each planet for all twelve houses. For each and every house, all seven planets
contribute their power or strength in terms of numerical value. This makes it easy to compare
the powers of the planets for each house. There is no other system which can give such a
clear cut view of the comparative strengths of all the planets.

By employing the Ashtakavargha system along with other principals, the following things
can be determined with great accuracy:

 Predicting the general strengths of the planets and the houses


 Anticipating certain important events in a person’s life
 Forecasting dasha results
 Overall life readings
 Profession of the person
 Timing events for important results
 Day to day power of the horoscope and results
 Marking the evolution of the achievements in the life.
 Prasna Charts
 Political and Social forecasting
 Transit results

In this study we have taken our sample to size to around 20 horoscopes with special reference
to marriage. It was found that the results were significantly good with respect to marriage
with some deviations. More research on the same can give more fruitful results in the near
future

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION

ASTROLOGY

Astrology is the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial objects as a
means of divining information about human affairs and terrestrial events. Astrology has been
dated to at least the 2nd millennium BCE, and has its roots in calendrical systems used to
predict seasonal shifts and to interpret celestial cycles as signs of divine
communications. Many cultures have attached importance to astronomical events, and some
– such as the Indians, Chinese, and Maya – developed elaborate systems for predicting
terrestrial events from celestial observations. Western astrology, one of the oldest astrological
systems still in use, can trace its roots to 19th–17th century BCE Mesopotamia, from which it
spread to Ancient Greece, Rome, the Arab world and eventually Central and Western Europe.
Contemporary Western astrology is often associated with systems of horoscopes that purport
to explain aspects of a person's personality and predict significant events in their lives based
on the positions of celestial objects; the majority of professional astrologers rely on such
systems.

1.2 ASHTAKAVARGA
Numbers are a simple way of understanding many facts of life. Ashtakavargha charts are an
easy way to understand a horoscope. Simply look at the numbers and you will know a great
deal about the person. This is not numerology but part of Astrology. A quantitative way of
assessing your possibilities in life. The aim of this is to let you know in how many ways you
can use the Ashtakavargha chart. Believe me; I am going to discuss only the simple methods
that even a novice in Astrology can easily understand.

In most of the computer generated horoscope you may have seen a set of charts with 12
numbers in each of them. Normally we are used to seeing the names of planets (Grahas)
instead we see either 2 digit numbers in 1 chart and single digit numbers in many other
charts. So what are these numbers? Is this some kind of a numerical way of understanding
our life? Yes it is.

This is what the ancient masters of Astrology have often used while reading a chart and
Maharshi Parasara calls it that part of Astrology that is more dependable and that which never
fails. In fact these charts were used along with the other charts with planets in them,
combining them seem to make a horoscope reading more reliable.

You may have seen several Ashtakavargha charts. Usually there is one for every planet. The
chief amongst them is called the Sarva-ashtakavarga and is always the biggest chart when
compared to the other Ashtakavargha charts. Sarva means all-encompassing and this chart is
a sum total of all other Ashtakavargha chart.

Rahu and Ketu do not have separate Ashtakavargha charts as they are shadow planets. So you
will have 7 plus 1 and that makes it 8.Most people have no idea that it is one of the very
useful information available in their horoscope

1.3 TOPIC CHOSEN FOR STUDY

1.4 NEED FOR THE STUDY


Vedic Astrology has provided us many predictive methods including Jaimini, Parashara,
horary methodology etc. However it’s really cumbersome to arrive at a definite conclusion
when certain principles are contradicting.

Ashtakavargha system provides us the mathematical snapshot of planets and bhavas which
acts a good tool in delineating the chart with maximum efficiency.

1.5 OBJECTIVES

1. To study the Ashtakavargha principles.

2. To study the impact of Ashtakavargha principles on Natal charts

3. To gain an insight into the Marriage perspectives with respect to the Ashtakavargha

principles.

4. To suggest suitable strategies for effective Ashtakavargha utilization.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study covers the introduction to Ashtakavargha and its various principles. But special
reference is given to effects of Ashtakavargha points on marriage. However the analysis
depends upon the data of respondents with respect to the parameters and critical variables.
The topic, scope of the study is limited to the analysis and evaluation of various parameters.

1.7 METHODOLOGY ADOPTED

1.7.1Sampling

Sampling unit comprises of secondary data obtained through internet and journals and
other secondary data and data obtained through survey method directly from the
respondent by the means of questionnaire.

A sample of 20 was chosen for the purpose of the study

Convenient sampling: for the purpose of study convenience sampling was adopted. It’s a
type of non-probability sampling. The respondents who were willing to participate in the
study were taken as sampling units.

1.7.4 Data collection methods

Primary data: The primary data are those which are attained by the researcher from
the field directly for the first time. Primary data is gathered through direct interview,
observation etc. The advantage of primary data is that they are truthful and further suit
the purpose. The primary data is collected with the help of questionnaire and interview

method. The data required for this study was mostly collected directly from the
respondent.

Secondary data: The required secondary data is collected from the company records,
books, journal and internet etc.

1.8 LITERATURE REVIEW

Ashtakavargha takes into cognisance the actions and interactions of the transiting planets
with regard to their radical situations and by a certain manipulations of the benefic and
malefic influences given rise to such movements and measured numerically as so many units-
certain important events are determined. ( B V Raman , Ashtakavargha system of prediction

Multiply the sodya pinda of Venus by the number of bindus in 7th from the Venus in his own
Ashtakavargha. Divide the product by 27. When the Jupiter transits the asterism represented
by the remainder, marriage is likely. . (B V Raman, Ashtakavargha system of prediction
chapter91 p-88)

Multiply the sodya pinda of Venus by the bindus in the 7th from Jupiter. Divide the product
by 27. When Jupiter transits the star indicated by the remainder, death of the partner may take
place. . ( B V Raman , Ashtakavargha system of prediction chapter 9 p-89)

Total the bindus in Saturn Ashtakavargha from lagna to the sign occupied by Saturn. Total
also the bindus from Saturn til the lagna. These two numbers will indicate the age when the
person is likely to suffer from misfortunes and troubles. (B V Raman, Ashtakavargha system

There is a misconception that Ashtakavargha is applicable only to rasi charts. Parasara does
not say it. Parasara lists the divisional charts in which different areas of life are seen, at the
very beginning of BPHS. So all the analysis in the rest of his classic applies to all the
divisional charts, unless Parasara explicitly mentions rasi chart (P V narasimha rao,
introduction to Vedic astrology, chapter 12 p-154)

The another technique to calculate the Dasha results on the basis of Ashtaka Varga is to
divide the Dasha years in twelve equal parts and first starts from the Antardasha Rashi of the
sign occupied by Dasha Lord and that sign should have minimum of 5 benefic out of 8
benefic points to give benefic results and next Rashi Antardasha will be the next sign from
the sign occupied by Dasha Lord. If the Antarrashi has less than 4 benefic points then that
part of the Dasha brings frustration, ill health and setbacks though there may be exceptions.

The Antarrashi periods of 6th, 8th or 12th house generally create hurdles, disappointments
and crises as per my researches. (Wonders of Ashtakavargha an article by vishal aksh)

In an Ashtakavargha horoscope if a planet is at the cusp at the beginning or the end of a


zodiacal sign then the results obtained may be doubtful and so will be the case if in a Chalit
horoscope when there are two houses in one zodiacal sign or one house containing two
zodiacal signs. Hence astrologers are advised to consider the degree Cal difference and the
zodiacal sign of planets while giving predictions.

Ashtakavargha horoscope which consists of 8 columns inclusive of lagna/ascendant and the


final 9th column gives the total known as Samudaya Ashtakavargha or Sarvashtakvarga.

Some astrologers give predictions based on Bhinnashtakvarga which does not include
Lagnashtakvarga (benefic dots based on ascendant) where the total is 337 is not proper.

Samudaya or Sarvashtakvarga can be prepared without the preparing of Bhinnashtakvarga


with much less difficulty ‘Balo Balishtho’ (Prashna Marga Ch 32 sloka 59-60; Horasara Ch
17, sloka 73-74; Phaldeepika Ch 24, sloka 34-35 and Jataka Deshmarga Ch 9, sloka 35-36)

1.9 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The various limitations of this study are listed below:

1. The scope of the study was confined to only fewer respondents

2. The information gathered is based on respondents. Hence it may/may not reflect

the true situation.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

2.1 ASHTAKAVARGA DEFINED

ASHT’ in Sanskrit means eight; it denotes eight types of energies denoted by planets, which
every planet in an horoscope generates with respect to itself, Lagna and six other planets. The
energies released can be benefic or malefic.

2.1 Introduction

Analysing a chart and making correct predictions requires mixing many different
principles and making fine compromises and judgments. Sage Parasara said that it is
difficult for even great Maharshis. In Kali Yuga41, human beings become sinful and the
sins kill their intelligence. Parasara said that the intellectual pygmies of Kali Yuga
cannot cope with too many complicated principles and presented Ashtakavargha as a
simple technique that lets them make reasonable predictions without much fuss.
Ashtaka means “consisting of eight” and varga means “a group”. Ashtakavargha is the
system of analysing a chart with respect to a group of 8 reference points.

When we analyse the positions of planets with respect to lagna, we have the concept of
good and bad placements. For example, Jupiter in the 9th from lagna will be well placed
and Jupiter in the 3rd will be badly placed. Mars in the 3rd from lagna will be well
placed and Mars in the 9th will be badly placed.

However, lagna is not the only reference point in a chart. We have Sun and Moon. In
fact, all the planets serve as reference points in a chart and they represent the sources of
various energies that are present in a native. Based on the houses in which different
planets are placed in transit, they can be benefic with respect to some energy sources

and malefic with respect to some. If a transiting planet is benefic with respect to more
energy sources, then it brings good results.

So Ashtakavargha is essentially a system that tells us the benefic positions of lagna and
seven planets with respect to each other. This can be used to analyze the strength of a
natal chart, but it is much more important in analysing transits.

2.2 Samudaya or Sarvashtakvarga

A table consisting of 12 houses and 7 planets i.e. of 84 squares (in which starting from
lagna/ascendant & all seven planets together) is prepared by putting all the dots/zeroes and
adding them together is known as Samudaya or Sarvashtakvarga.

The total benefics should be written in each house along with the planets and zodiacal signs.

Samudaya or Sarvashtakvarga can be prepared without the preparing of Bhinnashtakvarga


with much less difficulty ‘Balo Balishtho’ (Prashna Marga Ch 32 sloka 59-60; Horasara Ch
17, sloka 73-74; Phaldeepika Ch 24, sloka 34-35 and Jataka Deshmarga Ch 9, sloka 35-36).

Planets which are exalted in their own zodiacal signs, in friend’s house, in quadrants, trines
and Upachayas (3, 6, 10 & 11) houses being strong etc, but if they have less than 28 benefic
dots then they shall give adverse results.

Weak planets such as


Owners of 6th 8th and 12th
Planets of 6th 8th and 12th
Debilitated planets, planets with malefic or in enemies house
Have more than 28 benefic dots then they shall give benefic results.

House and Lords of the House


Zodiacal sign rising at the eastern horizon or ascendant/lagna and its lord/lagnesh and the
lords of the subsequent houses are to be noted.

For each and every house a minimum number of benefic dots have been determined & they
are as follows:

Any house containing benefic dots less than shown above will give that much less benefic
result in proportion to the difference from the benefic dots. On the contrary if benefic dots are
more than those shown above then the benefic results will be that much more in proportion.

If these houses are aspected by benefic planets then the extent of benefic results will be much
more. If instead it is aspected by malefic planet then the benefic results will get reduced.

The houses which contain less than benefic dots shown above if aspected by malefic planet
then the malefic results will be much more and if aspected by benefic planets then the malefic
results will get reduced.

Should such houses be aspected by benefic as well as malefic planets then the results would
be mixed.

Houses which contain 30 or more benefic dots give benefic results, houses with 25 to 30
benefic dots give average results and houses with less than 25 benefic dots shall give adverse
results.

Houses with 30 or more benefic dots should be taken into consideration for commencing
good work.

For travelling and other religious workhouses and ascendant with less than 25 benefic dots
should be avoided.

2.3 Match Making for Marriage

In marriage if the Bride and Bridegroom have more than 30 benefic dots in their rashi (Moon
sign) then they would have a happy married life and would be successful.

If instead in the rashi or moon sign one has 30 or more and the other has 30 or less then their
marriage will give mix results. It would be good in some aspect and bad in other aspect.

In case they have 25 or less than 25 in their rashi or Moon sign then their marriage would be
unhappy and a failure.

2.4 Inheritance

If the 4th house has 24 or more benefic dots and then the house does not have any malefic
planet or is not aspected by malefic planet.
And in the same way the 2nd house does not have malefic planet nor is it aspected by malefic
planet and has 22 or more benefic dots.
Any one of the above two combinations in the native horoscopes can give inheritance.

2.5 Self Earning

If the 10th house has 36 or more benefic dots and it does not have any malefic planet nor is it
aspected by malefic planet then the native will be self-made, will earn well and shall lead a
happy life.

2.6 Gains

If the 11th house has 54 benefic dots and it does not have any relation with malefic planet
then the natives earns a lot without hard work.

2.7 Sudden Monetary Gains


If the ascendant has more than 25 benefic dots & the 9th house has more than 29 benefic dots
and both these houses have no connection with malefic planet then such native gets sudden
monetary gains.

2.8 Prakeerna Yogas

In a native’s horoscope the special good/auspicious results can be known from the benefic
dots in various houses. As for example, if the 12th house contains less number of benefic dots
as compared to the 11th house then the native shall be rich. If the case is reverse then the
native will always have economical difficulty. If the 11th house contains more numbers of
benefic dots than the 10th house then the native will get more money than the efforts put in
by him. In case the benefic dots in the 11th house are less than the 10th house then the native
will get less money as compared to the efforts put in by him. In this way the difference in the
benefic dots also give difference in results.

Add up the benefic dots in the lagna/ascendant, 2nd house, 4th house, 9th house, 10th house
and the 11th house. If the total is more than 164 then the native is happy and his income will
be more than his expenses.

Add up the benefic dots of the 6th house, 8th house and the 12th house. If the total is less
than 76 then the income shall be more than expenses. If the total is more than 76 reverse is
the case.

Add the benefic dots in the lagna/ascendant, 4th house, 5th house, 7th house, 9th house and
the 10th house. Add up the benefic dots of the remaining houses. If the first total is more than
the second then the native is wise, doer of good deeds, satisfied and will be charitable.

The names have been given as above. If the total of Poshak is more than Ghatak then the
native is a rich man. If the total of Bandhu is more than Sewak then the native will do
independent business and will have good colleagues/ associates.

If the 11th house has more number of benefic dots than the 10th house but the 12th house has
less benefic dots than those in the 11th house and the 10th house, and if the benefic dots in
the lagna/ascendant is more than the 12th house then the native will be famous, rich and
strong. The results will differ according to the difference in the number of benefic dots.

2.9 Poisoning-Illness

If Rahu is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house then the native is likely to be bitten by poisonous
snake or can have food poisoning at the age shown by the number of benefic dots in those
houses, and if in that year Rahu happens to transit the same house then it is definitely going
to happen. If Mars is placed in any house then at the age indicated by the benefic dots in that
house the native is likely to get injured by weapons. In the same way where Saturn is placed
then at the age indicated by the number of benefic dots in that house the native is likely to get
ill or there are sad occasions at that age.

2.10 Poverty-Illness

Take lagna/ascendant, 9th, 10th and 11th houses. If in each of these houses the benefic dots
are less than 30 the native will be poor, ill and hot tempered.

If in the above houses the benefic dots are between 19 and 22 and there are malefic planets in
trines then the native lacks happiness.

2.11 Wealth and Children

Where Jupiter is placed then at the age indicated by the number of benefic dots in that house
the native gets children and wealth.

2.12 Marriage

Marriage of native takes place at the age indicated by the benefic dots in the house where
Venus is placed.

Directions

Lagna/ascendant 12th house 11th house —————East

10th house 9th house 8th house—————-South

7th house 6th house 5th house—————-West

4th house 3rd house 2nd house—————-East

Add up the benefic dots in the above houses as per the directions given. The direction which
has the highest benefic dots indicates benefic results in that direction. The direction which
has the least number of benefic dots indicates that the native will have loss in that direction.
Hence the native should avoid that direction. The native shall benefit from staying in
countries/region of the direction(s) which has maximum number of benefic dots, and also the
direction in which the planets are exalted in their own zodiacal signs etc.

The direction indicated by the group which has 2nd house is favourable for making money.
The direction indicated by the group which has 8th house is the direction in which the
native’s death takes place.

2.13 Important Yoga’s-Luck

Note the number of benefic dots in Lagna/Ascendant. If the native is born in Sampat Suchak
yoga (indicating richness) then the native will after the age indicated by the benefic dots will
get honour from government, money, son and higher education etc.

2.14 Longevity

If the 12th house lord is in the lagna/ascendant in the zodiacal sign ruled by Saturn and if the
ascendant lord and the lord of the 8th house are weak in strength, then the native will live as
much years as indicated by the benefic dots in the ascendant. Note this happens only in
Capricorn and Aquarius ascendant.

2.15 Determination of Longevity

For determining the life span of the native the use of Samudaya/Sarvashtakvarga is of prime
importance. Compare the benefic dots in the ascendant with those in the 8th house. Also
compare the benefic dots placed in the Moon sign and the 8th house from the Moon sign. In
case the benefic dots in the ascendant and the Moon sign are more than their corresponding
8th house then the native will have Deergha Aayush/Long life. If they are equal then the
native will have average life span and if they are less than the native will have short life span.

2.16 Affluence

If the lord of the ascendant is in the 4th house and the lord of the 4th house is in the ascendant
(Parivartan yoga-Exchange of the lords of the houses) and if the benefic dots are 33 in both
the houses then the native shall have affluence and have kingly status. He will be best among
the people.

2.17 Financial Gain

If the benefic dots in the ascendant and the 11th house are more than 30 and if these benefic
dots are same in both the houses then at the age indicated by the number of benefic dots the
native will get financial gains from the King/Government.

If in each of the first, fourth and the eleventh house the benefic dots are more than 30 then the
native after the age of 40 will have commanding personality and will earn lots of money.

Counting from ascendant and starting from the 4th house till the 9th house if all the 6 houses
have benefic dots between 25 and 30 then the native shall after the age of 28 at any time will
be as rich as King Kuber (King of wealth).

If exalted Jupiter is in the 4th house and if there are 40 benefic dots, Sun in the ascendant of
Aries and if Moon is in Capricorn then the native will be like King.

If the ascendant has 40 benefic dots; Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Venus is in Pisces, Mars is
exalted and Saturn is in Aquarius then such a native will be extremely rich and King of
Kings.

If there are 30 or more benefic dots in the ascendant, 9th house, 10th house and the 11th
house then such a native will be happy like a king all through out his life or shall have power
and affluence like that of a king.

Minister

If the ascendant, Moon sign, 10th house and the 11th house; all these four have 30 or more
benefic dots and if the ascendant is fully aspected by Jupiter then the native becomes minister
or a chief minister of a state.

Leader

If the ascendant has 30 benefic dots and majority of planets are placed in the 9th and the 10th
house then the native enjoys happy and relaxed life. If instead there are 35 benefic dots in the
ascendant then the native is also leader amongst his family members.

Ownership of Vehicles

If the 4th house has 30 or more benefic dots and it is associated with benefic planets either by
placement or aspect then the native owns vehicles.

If the ascendant lord is in the 4th house containing more than 30 benefic dots then the native
is happy and without any problems.

Vargottam planet in any house that has more than 30 benefic points then the native shall have
good results of that house in great extent.

2.18 Difficulty due to Evil Spirits

If the Moon is weak and if the Moon sign lord is having less than 25 benefic points and if
Moon is fully aspected by Saturn (birth is on New Moon day and if Moon is aspected by
Saturn) then that native is harassed by evil spirits.

2.19 Upturn and Downturn

In a horoscope there are minimum benefic points (for e.g. 18) in any house and the next
house contains maximum benefic dots (for e.g. 35) Then all of a sudden the native
experiences good luck or Upturn in his fortunes. On the contrary if any house contains
maximum benefic dots (for e.g. 35) and the next house contains minimum benefic dots (for
e.g. 18) then the native experiences all of a sudden bad luck or downturn in his fortunes.

If in all the houses of horoscope there are benefic dots between 27 to 29 then the native leads
happy and leisurely life through out his life span.

2.20 Information regarding Zodiacal Signs

All the 12 zodiacal signs are divided into 3 parts. Each part contains benefic dots of 4
zodiacal signs. There are many ways given by our Rishis & Sages to form these divisions.
Some of them are given below:

1Aries to Cancer; Leo to Scorpio and Sagittarius to Pisces.


2 Aries to Cancer; Leo to Scorpio and Sagittarius to Pisces. Deduct from them the benefic
dots from the 8th and the 12th
3 Pisces to Gemini; Cancer to Libra; Scorpio to Aquarius.

5 12th house to 3rd house; 4th house to 7th house; 8th house to 11th house;
6 Kendrasthan/Quadrants (1,4,7 & 8);Panafars/Cadent houses (2,5,8 & 11);
Apokilams/Succedent houses (3,6,9 & 12

2. The 2nd division has more benefic dots then the middle 1/3rd life is a happy one.

3. If the last division has more benefic dots then the last 1/3rd life is a happy one.

If in all the three divisions it has nearly same number of benefic dots then the whole
life is seamlessly a happy one.

If in any division the benefic planets are placed then that part of the life is a happy
one. If in any division the benefic as well as malefic planets are placed then that part of life
gives mixed results. That division which contains malefic planets will be unhappy and sad
one.

2.21Various Yogas

Kaahal Yoga

If the 3rd division is bigger than the 2nd division and the 2nd division is bigger than the first
division then Kaahal yoga is generated. The result of this yoga is that as the age advances the
life of the native gets better and better and he leads happy and prosperous life.

Result of Mudal Yoga

If the 2nd division is bigger than the 3rd and the 1st division then Mudal yoga is generated.
The result of this is that the native will be fond of music and of witty nature. He will be
happy & prosperous in the middle life.

Bheri Yoga

If all the 3 divisions are nearly same then Bheri Yoga is generated. Such a native’s whole life
is nice and smooth.

If the 2nd division is smaller than the 1st and the 3rd division then Damar yoga is generated.
The result of this is that the native’s first and the last 1/3rd of the life is a happy one.

2.22 Results of Planetary Transits

If in a horoscope any of the houses contain benefic dots more than 28 then whenever a planet
transits that house the native will experience the benefic results governed to that house and
will be in proportion to the extent of the number of benefic dots. If the case is reverse i.e. if
the benefic dots are less than 28 then during the transit of any planet through that house the
native will experience the bad results governed by that house. Similarly if more number of
planets is transiting the house then the native will experience the good or bad results in direct
proportion to the amount of excess or less benefic dots.

In the houses which contain more number of benefic dots, and if at the same time more
number of planets are transiting those houses then any work commenced during that time will
be successful. Whenever Sun passes through the house containing more number of benefic
dots; in that month and in the same way determine the day by the passage of Moon if
important works are commenced on that day it is certain that the works commenced shall be
successful without any hindrance and shall give good results.

Take the zodiacal sign in which there are maximum number of benefic dots; if one
commences work during the rise of that zodiacal sign (rapt conjunction) one gets complete
success. As the houses/zodiacal signs containing maximum number of benefic dots are good
for certain work in the same way the houses/zodiacal signs containing minimum number of
benefic dots are good for other work. For example, if the native wants to go for the
examinations of certain disease or say if the native wants to borrow or lend money then if
such act is done during the time those houses/zodiacal signs which contain minimum number
of benefic dots are rising it will prove beneficial. Since such work gets destroyed in a short
time. It means that the disease will get cured, money landed is returned or one is able to
return the money if borrowed.

The above points are very important in a man’s daily life.

Starting from the ascendant till the house which has Saturn (both inclusive) add up the total
number of benefic dots. Multiply this total by 7 and divide the result by 27. Note the
remainder as well as the number obtained by the division. Count from Ashwini nakshatra to
the nakshatra which coincides with the remainder. Whenever malefic planets are passing
through that nakshatra the native gets major illness. If the native has malefic planets in the
5th house and the 9th house then such a native will have severe problems due to illness.
Similar is also the case at the age as per the division number.

Just as above, one should calculate starting from the house in which Saturn is placed till the
ascendant.

Happiness and Wealth

Do the same calculations for Moon and other benefic planets such as Jupiter, Venus and
Mercury. Whenever benefic planets passes through the nakshatra obtained from the
remainder or at the age indicated by the result of the division the native will get son, money
and happiness.

Successful Years

Prepare Samudaya Ashtakvarga. Note the houses which have more number of benefic dots.
Also note the houses with less number. of benefic dots. Consider ascendant as the 1st year,
2nd house as the 2nd year in the same way the 12th house is the 12th year. Once again
consider the ascendant as the 13th year. Now the houses which have more number of benefic
dots will give good results as per their years, and the houses which have less number of
benefic dots will give bad results. Ascendant thus, will indicate 25th year, 37th year, 49th
year etc. Such method is known as determining “successful years”.

In this we have considered Samudaya Ashtakvarga and the easy way of giving predictions
without much difficulty. Thus we can give immediate general prediction without much effort.

how to read this table, let us go to the column titled “Merc” in Table . This shows

benefic houses for Sun to occupy, with respect to Mercury. The 1st and

2nd houses have 0 and the 3rd house has 1. So the first 2 houses from Mercury are

malefic for Sun and the 3rd house is benefic for Sun. Table 20-Table 26 give the
benefic and malefic houses of Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and
lagna (respectively).

Readers without a computer program should memorize these tables. To the modern
reader who is overly dependent on computers, memorizing these tables may seem
like a daunting task. As our dependency on technology increases, several skills of
our brain are left either unused or undeveloped and those skills slowly vanish.
Computing Ashtakavargha by hand is not as difficult as it may seem to be. In fact,
even today, some people in India compute all the Ashtakavargha tables by hand in a
matter of a few minutes.

Example: Let us say Venus is in Ge. Find the rasis in which Jupiter is benefic with
respect to Venus.

To find the rasis in which Jupiter is benefic, we should look at Jupiter’s ashtakavarga
.To find the rasis in which Jupiter is benefic with respect to Venus, we should look at

the column of Venus. Only the 2nd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th and 11th houses have a 1
(rekha – benefic point) against them. Venus is in Ge and finding these houses with
respect to Venus, we get Cn, Li, Sc, Aq, Pi and Ar. So Jupiter is benefic with respect to
Venus in these rasis.

2.24. Bhinna Ashtakavarga


In this book, we will denote ashtakavarga with AV. We prepare what is known as
“Bhinna Ashtakavarga” for each planet. It is denoted with BAV. Bhinna means
“separate”. When preparing the BAV of a planet, we count the number of references
from which the planet is benefic in each rasi and put that count in that rasi. For each
planet, we prepare a different BAV. Sometimes we may simply use the word
“ashtakavarga” (AV) to represent a BAV.

The count in each rasi is between 0 to 8. It is called the number of rekhas (benefic
points) in that rasi. If a planet is in a sign with a count of 5, 6, 7 or 8, it means that
the planet is benefic in that rasi with respect to more references. So the planet is
favorable. If a planet is in a sign with a count of 3, 2, 1 or 0, it means that the planet is
malefic in that rasi with respect to more references. So the planet is unfavorable. If the

count is 4, the planet is neutral. We can use this analysis in natal charts and also transit
charts.

Example : After finding the rasis in which Mercury is benefic with respect to
various references, let us count the references with respect to which Mercury is benefic
in each rasi. From the answer to Exercise 18, we see that Mercury is benefic in Ar
with respect to Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and lagna. In other words,
Mercury is benefic in Ar with respect to 7 references. So we write 7 in Ar. We see that
Mercury is benefic in Ta with respect to Sun, Mercury, Venus and Saturn. In other
words, Mercury is benefic in Ta with respect to 4 references. So we write 4 in Ta. We
find the count of references for each rasi and prepare a chart. This is called Mercury’s
BAV or simply Mercury’s AV.

In Ar and Ge, we have 7 rekhas. So Mercury is benefic in those rasis with respect to
7 references out of 8. In Aq, we have 6 rekhas. So these three rasis are particularly
favorable for Mercury. In Vi and Cp, we have 3 rekhas and that is the lowest. So
Mercury is particularly unfavorable in Vi and Cp. We can use this information to
interpret how favorable Mercury is in the natal chart or in a transit chart. Here
Mercury is in Ge in the natal chart and Ge has 7 rekhas in Mercury’s AV. That
means that Mercury is a very favorable planet. Being the lagna lord and being in a
quadrant from lagna in own sign (i.e. Bhadra yoga) makes him even stronger.
Because of this, Mercury is extremely favorable in this chart. No wonder Sri P.V.
Narasimha Rao is a brilliant scholar, well versed in many languages. He is an excellent
writer and he won a prestigious literary award for a literary work in a language that is
not his mother tongue.

Chart

2.25 Divisional Charts


There is a misconception that ashtakavarga is applicable only to rasi charts. Parasara
does not say it. Parasara lists the divisional charts in which different areas of life are
seen, at the very beginning of BPHS. So all the analysis in the rest of his classic
applies to all the divisional charts, unless Parasara explicitly mentions rasi chart. For
example, Parasara says that D-12 shows matters related to father. So any principles
based on ashtakavarga and sodhya pindas that let us predict matters related to father
must use D-12. This is a logical deduction and Parasara does not have to mention it
explicitly each time.

If we can judge the benefic positions of various planets with respect to 8 references in
rasi chart, there is no reason why we should not do it in all the divisional charts. In fact,
this becomes invaluable when we interpret transits in rasi chart with respect to the natal
positions in divisional charts and transits in divisional charts with respect to the natal
positions in rasi chart.

Ashtakavarga of divisional charts is prepared in the same manner as that of rasi


chart. The benefic houses for each planet with respect to the 8 references are the same.
We can apply the same rules and find the BAVs of all planets. In fact, we can find
SAV of a divisional chart too.

Example : Let us consider the rasi chart and D-10 of India’s Prime Minister Sri
A.B. Vajpayee (see Chart 3 for birthdata).

In rasi chart, the 11th house has the maximum number of rekhas (38) showing

excellent gains. The 3rd house of communication has 34 rekhas. With the significator

of communication Mercury and the artistic Moon in the 3rd house, he is an excellent
communicator, great orator and poet. Though Sri Vajpayee’s career wasn’t a bed of
roses – he struggled in the opposition parties for most of his career – he finally became
India’s Prime Minister and one must agree that he had a very successful career. He is

known as a man of great character. With lagna and the 10th house in the SAV of rasi
chart containing only 26 and 28 rekhas – which is just average – why did he have
such a successful career? The answer lies in the SAV of D-10. Lagna in D-10 is Sc and
it contains 35 rekhas – maximum in D-10’s SAV. Arudha lagna also contains more

than 30 rekhas. These factors explain his success and good name. The 3rd house in D-
10 also has more than 30 rekhas – like in the rasi chart – and that increases the chance
of being an excellent communicator in public life. Though D-10 is powerful with lagna

and arudha lagna containing more than 30 rekhas, one may notice that the 8th house
in D-10 (Ge) has 33 rekhas in D-10’s SAV. This explains the struggle in Vajpayee’s
career.

Chart

2.26 Prastaara Ashtakavarga

Using the Bhinna Ashtakavarga (BAV) of a planet, we can find out the rasis in
which it is benefic with respect to more references and the rasis in which it is malefic
with respect to more references. To interpret transits, this is sometimes not enough. For
example, if we know that a planet is benefic in Ta with respect to 5 references, that
may not be enough. We may need to know exactly what those 5 references are. If we
are looking for Jupiter’s transit that brings marriage, for example, we may want Jupiter

to be benefic in his transit rasi with respect to certain planets (Venus or DK or 7th
lord in navamsa, for example). In such situations, we need to know exactly which
references a planet is benefic from.

For this purpose, we prepare “Prastaara Astakavarga”. It will be denoted with PAV.
Prastaara means “spread-out”. PAV is a spreadsheet that shows the exact references
from which a planet is benefic in a rasi. We prepare one PAV for each planet. Different
people may represent PAV differently. Some people may cast a chart and write the list
of benefic references in each rasi.

The basic purpose of a planet’s PAV is to show the references with respect to which
the planet is benefic in each rasi.

NOTE: From PAV, we can construct BAV easily. We may note that the sum of all the
entries in each column – rasi – in a PAV gives the number of rekhas in that rasi in
BAV. This is shown in the last row.

2.27 Sodhya Pindas


We discussed the computation of BAV before. By applying some reductions on the
values in BAV, we get “Sodhita Ashtakavarga” (SoAV). Using it, we find Sodhya
Pindas of different planets. These pindas are very important in predicting key events
and we will talk about them again in the part “Transit Analysis”.

2.27.1 Trikona Sodhana (Trinal Reduction)


Consider the BAV of a planet. Look at different sets of mutual trines separately (e.g.
First set: Ar, Le and Sg, Second set: Ta, Vi and Cp) and apply the following rules on
each set:

(1) If atleast one rasi has zero, no reduction is necessary.


(2) If the three rasis have the same value, make them all zero.
(3) Take the lowest value out of the three. Subtract it from all the values.

Example : As an example, let us take Mercury’s BAV given in Chart. Let us takes
fiery trines. Ar, Le and Sg have 7, 4 and 4 rekhas. Rules (1) and (2) don’t apply and we
go to (3). The lowest value is 4. Subtracting it from the three values, we write
3, 0 and 0 in Ar, Le and Sg respectively. Let us take the watery trines now. Cn, Sc
and Pi have 4 rekhas each. Rule (2) applies and we write zero in all the three rasis.
Readers may carry out the reduction for the remaining two sets of trines and verify that
we get the following table after Trikona Sodhana:

2.27.2 Ekaadhipatya Sodhana (Co-owned Reduction)


After we carry out Trikona Sodhana, we carry out another reduction on the pairs of
signs that are owned by the same planet. Ar and Sc are owned by Mars; Ta and Li
are owned by Venus; Ge and Vi are owned by Mercury; Sg and Pi are owned by
Jupiter; and, Cp and Aq are owned by Saturn. We apply a reduction on these pairs of
rasis separately, using the following rules:

(1) If atleast one of the rasis has a zero in it, no reduction is necessary and stop here. (2)
If both the rasis are occupied by a planet (or planets), again no reduction is
necessary and stop here.

(3) If one rasi is occupied by a planet (or planets) and the other is empty, then do the
following:

(a) If the empty rasi has a lower value, replace the value with a zero.

(b) If the empty rasi has a higher value, replace the value with the value in the
other rasi.

(4) If both the rasis are empty, then do the following:

(a) If both the rasis have the same value, replace both with zero.

(b) If they have different values, replace the higher value with the lower value.

Example : Let us continue with Example . Let us take Ar and Sc. Sc has zero in it and
(1) applies. So there is no reduction. In fact, (1) applies to all pairs and so all the
values remain unchanged after Ekaadhipatya reduction.

Example: Let us consider some other hypothetical examples to understand all the rules
correctly.

(a) Let us say Ta and Li have 4 and 2 rekhas after Trikona reduction. Let us say Ta is
occupied by Mars and Li by Jupiter and Saturn. In this case, rule (2) applies and we
do not alter the values.

(b) Let us say Ta and Li have 4 and 2 rekhas after Trikona reduction. Let us say Ta is
occupied by Mars and Li is empty. In this case, rule (3a) applies and we write
zero in Li, as Li is empty and it has a lower value than Ta.

(c) Let us say Ta and Li have 4 and 2 rekhas after Trikona reduction. Let us say Ta is
empty and Li is occupied by Jupiter and Saturn. In this case, rule (3b) applies and
we write 2 in Ta, as Ta is empty and it has a higher value than Li.

(d) Let us say Ta and Li have 4 and 2 rekhas after Trikona reduction. Let us say Ta
and Li are empty. In this case, rule (4b) applies and we replace the higher value 4
with the lower value 2. So we write 2 in Ta.

(e) Let us say Ta and Li have 2 and 2 rekhas after Trikona reduction. Let us say Ta
and Li are empty. In this case, rule (4a) applies and we write zero in Ta and Li.

2.27.3 Sodhya Pindas


After carrying out Trikona sodhana and then Ekaadhipatya sodhana on the BAV of a
planet, we get the “Sodhita Ashtakavarga” of that planet. We denote Sodhita
Ashtakavarga with SoAV. From it, we find “Sodhya Pinda” of each planet. This will
be used in transit analysis.

For each rasi, we multiply the number in that rasi in SoAV with the multiplier of that
rasi .We find such a product for all the 12 rasis. We find the sum of the products of
all the 12 rasis and the sum is called rasi pinda.

For each planet, we multiply the number in the rasi containing that planet with the
multiplier of that planet .We find such a product for all the 7 planets. We find the sum
of the products of all the 7 planets and the sum is called graha pinda.

By adding rasi pinda and graha pinda, we get “Sodhya Pinda” of the planet whose
SoAV we are working with.

Example: Let us continue with Mercury’s SoAV

Rasi Pinda: Product for Ar is 3 x 7 = 21. Product for Ta is 1 x 10 = 10. Product for
Ge is 3 x 8 = 24. Product for Aq is 2 x 11 = 22. Product for other rasis is zero,
because they contain zero and we get zero by multiplying zero with any number. The
sum of all the products is 21 + 10 + 24 + 22 = 77. So rasi pinda is 77.

Graha Pinda: Sun, Mars and Mercury are in Ge, which has 3 rekhas in SoAV. Product
of Sun is 3 x 5 = 15. Product of Mars is 3 x 8 = 24. Product of Mercury is 3 x
5 = 15. Venus is in Ar, which has 3. Product of Venus is 3 x 7 = 21. Other planets are in
rasis with zero in them. So the product is zero for them. The sum of all the
products is 15 + 24 + 15 + 21 = 75. So graha pinda is 75.

We get sodhya pinda of Mercury by adding rasi pinda and graha pinda. We get 77 +
75 = 152. So Mercury’s sodhya pinda in this chart is 152.

2.28 Controversies

With some authors using the term bindu (dot) to denote a benefic house and the term
rekha (line) to denote a malefic house – which is the opposite of what we learnt in
this chapter – readers may be confused when reading other books. So they should keep
in mind that there are different conventions in vogue. We are following Parasara’s
conventions in this book.

The above is merely a problem of different naming conventions. It is not a serious


issue at all. It is just a matter of getting used to different nomenclature. But there is
another issue, which is far more serious. There are a few inconsistencies between the
lists of benefic houses of Moon and Venus as given by Maharshi Parasara and the great
astrologer Varahamihira, who is relatively modern, as he belongs to 600 AD. These
inconsistencies may have arisen due to corruption of texts in time.

To define a planet’s ashtakavarga, Parasara first gives the count of references from
which the planet is malefic in the 1st house and then he lists the references. He does the
same thing for all houses. So we can crosscheck. As if this isn’t enough, the Sage then
lists the references from which the planet is benefic. He does it in all the houses again.
Just as “checksum” values are transmitted in today’s digital communication schemes to
provide resilience to transmission errors, the Sage, who normally uses words sparingly,
takes plenty of care to ensure that his teachings on ashtakavarga remain difficult to
corrupt. To corrupt one house value in Parasara’s account of ashtakavarga, one has to
consciously re-write the verses in three different places in a consistent fashion. With
the direct approach adopted by other authors, one can change the table just by
changing one word. For example, changing “sukha” (comfort – 4th) to “suta” (son –
5th) changes one value without affecting the meter used in the verses. With Parasara’s
indirect approach, consistent changes in multiple places are required for a single value
change. So Parasara’s indirect approach is superior in corruption resistance. We will
follow Parasara in this book.
Just for the information of the reader, the places of conflict will be mentioned below:

(1) Moon’s ashtakavarga: As per Parasara, Moon is benefic in the 9th from Moon and
malefic in the 9th from Mars. As per Varahamihira, Moon is malefic in the 9th

from Moon and benefic in the 9th from Mars.
(2) Moon’s ashtakavarga: As per Parasara, Moon is benefic in the 2nd from Jupiter
and malefic in the 12th from Jupiter. As per Varahamihira, Moon is malefic in the
2nd from Jupiter and benefic in the 12th from Jupiter.

(3) Venus’s ashtakavarga: As per Parasara, Venus is benefic in the 4th from Mars and
malefic in the 5th from Mars. As per Varahamihira, Venus is malefic in the 4th
from Mars and benefic in the 5th from Mars.

The definitions and calculations given in this chapter strictly follow Parasara for the
reasons already mentioned. However, readers are welcome to experiment and draw
their own conclusions. Until authentic and conclusive researches are conducted into the
use of sodhya pindas in the timing of events, we cannot conclusively resolve the above
controversy.
Apart from this, there is another needless controversy related to ashtakavarga. Some
people prepare “bhava chakra” or “chalit chakra” using Sripathi’s (or Porphyry’s)
house devision method and use that chart to cast ashtakavarga. If Saturn is at 3º in Vi
and lagna is at 27º in Le, they are very close and these people argue that Saturn is in
the 1st house from lagna and not in the 2nd house. These people make a bhava chakra
accordingly and use it in ashtakavarga. However, if lagna is at 15º in Le, Saturn is at
3º in Vi and Jupiter is at 27º in Le, they may take Saturn to be in the 2nd house from
Jupiter. They compute a bhava chakra with multi-sign houses only with respect to
lagna and not with respect to all the references used in ashtakavarga. So their
approach is neither here nor there.

3.1 Ashtaka varga Analysis

To study the principles of Ashtakavargha and find the interpretations for the same by
applying to various charts

25 Points in Ashtakavargha table indicates the average required strength of the particular
house. Points less than 25 would indicate the level of weakness of the particular house. More
the lesser values below 25 would indicate the deficient deliverance of the qualities of the
particular house.

Points higher than 25 would indicate the level of strengthening of the particular house. More
the higher values above 25 would indicate the higher level of deliverance of the particular
house

3.2 Marriage

This chapter makes an attempt to assess the Ashtakavargha points in 7th house and their
effect on marriage.

If the 7th house gets less value from 25, then the results could be predicted thus:

1. Delayed love/marriage proposals.


2. Weakening of Partnerships (love/life/sex/work/business).
3. Weak Partners.
4. Divorce
5. Widowhood

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS/


RECOMMENDATIONS

4.1 Summary

The study tried to evaluate various natal charts and it was found that people having
less than 24 points did not have a smooth marriage life or had a late marriage or didn’t have
marriage at all. The results of various parameters are as follows.

4.1.1 No Marriage

As per Ashtakavargha system it is found that people less than 25 points are not found to have
good married life. For this purpose 4 horoscopes of spiritual leaders were taken and it was
found that they all had less than 24 points. Hence this principle stands good.

4.1.2 Divorce

As per Ashtakavargha system it is found that people less than 25 points are not found to have
good married life. For this purpose 10 horoscopes of various people who were divorced was
taken from sastra study material and it was found significantly, all most all the horoscopes
had less than 25 points, except one horoscope. It was found that they all had less than 24
points rather than 25. Hence this principle stands good
4.1.3 Marriage Delay

For this purpose 3 horoscopes of various people who were not yet married after 30 years of
completion was taken for study s and it was found significantly, all most all the horoscopes
had less than 25 points, except one horoscope. It was found that they all had less than 24
points rather than 25. Hence this principle stands good
4.1.4 Happy Marriage Life

As per Ashtakavargha system it is found that people less than 25 points are not found to have
good married life. For this purpose 10 horoscopes of various people who have happy
marriage life were taken from sastra study material and it was found significantly, all most all

the horoscopes had more than 25 points, except one horoscope. It was found that they all had
less more than 25 points. Hence this principle stands good

4.2 Suggestions

The following suggestions were made based on analysis of the various horoscope

1. To use Ashtaka Varga system of prediction more frequently along with analysis of
traditional system of seeing the rasi chart

2. Analysis of Ashtakavargha system to various bhava charts and similar results to rasi
chart has been obtained successfully.

3. The Ashtakavargha system can be successfully applied to transit charts along with
judging transit results conventionally which will increase the result being better.

4.3 Use of Software Tools

For the purpose of generation of charts and Ashtakavargha calculation, Horoscope


explore version 3.5 was used.

4.4 Conclusions

Ashtakavargha system is undoubtedly one of better system of predictions in astrology. Its use
has been applied not only to natal chart but also to transit charts and various bhava charts. In
the present analysis of marriage bhava it was found significantly correct with most of charts
except one or two deviations.

If Ashtakavargha system is further research and coupled properly with conventional system
of astrology the significantly highly accurate results can be obtained.
