Vicente Tatay Tomás (1896-1980)

(=period 1 of Vicente Tatay Tomás-: 1950-1973)

Vicente Tatay Tomás was son of Vicente Tatay Alabau and was
married to Vicenta Adalid García. (She is related to Manuel
Adalid of Guitarras Esteve).
Vicente was apprentice of his father and started working in his
fathers workshop. (During 1921, Vicente worked a while for
Telesforo Julve)

He subsequently worked at:

“Vicente Tatay é Hijos”, together with his father Tatay Alabau and his 7 brothers.
Later on he, together with José Tatay Tomás lead the company “Hijos de Vicente Tatay”
untill in 1950 he left his brothers to go solo at the address Calle Peiro y Valero.
In 1958 he moved to Carrera Malilla 64 > 88, where he established the well known
company Vicente Tatay Tomás SA. (VITATO).
By anual output, his company became
one of the biggest in Spain.
He served other luthiers in Spain with his
instruments and was a regular supplier
to his brother Andrés Vicente Tatay
(alias Vincent Tatay) in New York.

Many valencian luthiers apprenticed and worked at Vicente Tatay

Tomas in the Carrera Malilla factory.
A few well known started their own carreer as guitar constructor:

In 1957 Manuel Adalid left to work solo and later joined

Francisco Esteve in Alboraya.
In 1961 José Molina left to work solo in Valencia.
In 1963 Rafael Molina left for Francisco Esteve, but soon after
founded MERVI in Valencia.
In 1963 Prudencio Sáez left to work solo in Torrent.

1973: Vicente’s son, José Tatay Adalid, his daughter Vicenta Tatay Adalid and his son in law
Fernando Granell Hoyo took over his business. The company’s name was not changed and
therefore from 1973 and on the name Vicente Tatay Tomás is used as both trade and company
name.
The business is dissolved in 1999 (While Vicenta already died 1997).
From 1998 Vicente’s grandson, Enrique Tatay López, continues the mark Vicente Tatay Tomás.

The identity swap of 1920.
Vicente was the oldest child in the Tatay
Tomás family. He had a younger brother:
Andrés.
In 1920 Andrés emigrated to the USA and used
the passport of his brother Vicente. Once inside
the States, Andrés had to continue using
Vicente’s identity for obvious reasons. For us
outsiders this sometimes can cause
confusions.

Vicente did not date his guitars (except for special guitars).
The inclination of the guitar gives a clue if it is an instrument from the Vicente-period.
His son Jose changed the inclination of the guitar on the label:
