H. Drobner (The Fathers of the Church: A Comprehensive Introduction, trans. S. Schatzmann, updated by W.
Harmless and H. Drobner [Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 2007] , pp. 187-89) makes a strong case for placing
the end of the the “fourth-century” period of church history at the year 430, and we have followed his
suggestion, with a few exceptions. For the interested reader, Coleman-Norton lists 174 more laws and letters
up to the year 534.
