The Patriot Post

The January Edition

Happy New Year! The first semester of the school year was a wonderful time spent
with your children and we are looking forward to an even better 2nd semester! We hope that
your family had a fun and relaxing winter break and are ready to succeed in 2019.
Our Patriot Post this month contains lots of important information. A survey link is
posted on the website and our Facebook page about Home/School communication. We
want to make sure that we are using the most effective ways to communicate with our
LHES families. There is also information about the School Messenger app where you can
sign up to receive notifications about inclement weather school closures.
If you are able, we would love for you to support our Basketball players and
Cheerleaders as they complete their season. As always, if you have any questions or

School Messenger App Reminder

It is the time of year when we begin to have inclement weather. Parents will be notified
through SchoolMessenger of closings or delayed start times. There is no need to "sign-up"
for the service. Another option to receive this information is through the SchoolMessenger
application on your Cell Phone. On SchoolMessenger, you have the ability to view your
contact information and also add phone numbers to call, include in texting (data charges may
occur from your individual cellular phone carrier), and additional email addresses. You may
have up to 5 total for each of these: phone, text, and email. To access or sign-up for your
SchoolMessenger Management account, go to the district website
(http://www.hcboe.net). On the left hand menu of the page, choose the School Closings &
Notifications/SchoolMessenger menu item to sign up for the App.

News From the Nurse

Parents as we enter this flu season please be sure to consider getting the flu vaccine for
your family. If your child does becomes sick, they cannot return to school until they are
fever free without Tylenol for 24 hours! Please stress good hand washing practices! This is
the number 1 way to prevent the spread of illness! Let's All do our part to have a happy and
healthy Winter season!

News from the Office

Parents, please make sure that you send either a medical note or parent note when your
child is absent. Remember, parents are permitted to use five (5) parent notes, per term,
and January will begin a new term. Please contact Ms. Lathim if you have any questions
about attendance. Thank you!

If your contact information has changed, please update the office with your current
phone numbers and address.

Pre-Kindergarten
In December, We enjoyed a field trip to the Fossil and Hands on Museum. Thank you to the
parents that attended. We completed our unit on animals and in January we will begin our unit
"Imagine It, Make It".
Kindergarten
Welcome Back!! We have an exciting month planned in January! We will be celebrating our
100th day of school and learning about the season of Winter! We have planned a field trip to
The Muse and will be sending home information in early January. In Math we have been
working on our teen numbers and will begin subtraction in January. If you have not sent in
your child’s extra set of winter clothes in case of an accident, please send these in as soon as
possible. To help increase your child’s academic success, please continue to read with your
child each night. At this point your child should know at least 70 sight words and numbers 0-
20. Please continue to study sight words and numbers at home.

First Grade
Happy New Year!! We cannot believe it is already 2019! Our first grade year is flying by! We
are so excited for the upcoming themes we will be focusing on this month. We will be learning
about marshes and swamps as we finish up our unit on plants. We will be learning about Martin
Luther King Jr. and how he helped make our world a better place! We will also be digging
deeper into presidents! We will be reading books such as Grace for President and Duck for
President to further our practice with identifying characters, setting, and events within a text.
In math, we will be continuing subtraction with 20 and then moving on to place value. We are
amazed at the progress your child is making! Please continue to read every night and study
spelling words. We love seeing your child be a successful learner!

Second Grade
In math, please continue to work with your child on addition and subtraction. In ELA, please
continue to read with your child every night. The hard work at home and school is showing off!

Third Grade
LHES 3rd Grade Remind Update Texts Now Available :) We will be sending important
information throughout the school year by text on a service called Remind. We will not be able
to see your phone number so signing up is confidential. This is an excellent way to stay
informed and not miss any notes home. Signing up is as simple as sending a text. Dial 81010
Type @pennala1 Reading: As we approach the second semester, it is important for our
students to know the TN Ready Test is right around the corner. We are working hard in class
to learn and prepare, but it is important students are preparing at home. There are some
different things you can do as a family. First off, read together. Take turns reading. Change
your voice for fun as you read different parts of a text. Second, talk with each other. Talk
about the weather, favorite things to do, dreams, hobbies, sports, etc. Have conversations with
each other and encourage your child to talk with complete sentences. Finally, be an example to
you child that learning is an ongoing, lifelong process. Encourage them to always try to learn
something new. We are excited to see what this next semester brings us!

Fourth Grade
This month we will be working on the following skills in English Language Arts: Comparing and
Contrasting characters and stories, grammar, vocabulary, and visualization. In Science, we will
be learning about erosion, weathering, and deposition. We also will be learning about natural
disasters and how they affect our Earth. In Social Studies, we are learning about the
American Revolution through a novel study of Johnny Tremain. In Math, we are learning
fractions. Therefore, it is necessary for your student to know their multiplication facts. Thanks
for all you do!
Fifth Grade
We can't believe we are half-way through the school year. We have really enjoyed having
your child this year. Since the beginning of the year, students have had the option to correct
failing grades on tests. We feel to prepare them for end-of-year testing, we would like
students to give their best effort the first time. They don't get second chances on the TN
Ready State Assessment. Please make sure your child is reading their passage each night and
taking notes on it. They may use these passages in the classroom. Also, Ms. Brooks is taking a
grade on the multiplication tests. Please continue to practice multiplication and division facts
with your child.
EL Update
This month in ELL, students will be preparing for the ACCESS test they will take in Spring
2019. This annual test shows how much English our students have acquired since last taking
the test. We will use our listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to show off how much
social, instructional, and academic vocabulary we have learned! Please continue to have your
child work on their language skills at home.

Miss Troutman & Ms. Potter’s Classes

Ms. Potter and Miss Troutman's classes enjoyed studying Christmas Around the World
throughout the month of December. They learned about holiday traditions in the countries of
Mexico, Germany, Australia, and the Untied States. After Winter Break Ms. Potter's class will
be studying winter weather, followed by arctic animals, then extinction and dinosaurs.

School Counseling/Guidance
Congratulations to our Top 10 Great Handshake Challenge winners! The Top 10 are: Lucy
Aguilar, Zion McCarthy, Abigail Mangold, Trevor Gibson, Yaily Gomez, Diego Gallardo, Kailyn
Thompson, Michael Spradlin, Emerson Galvan, and Kimberly Ortiz. We also had 3 alternates
who are: Josephine Taylor, Jalyn Brotherton, and Abril Arriaga. We are proud of all our 5th
grade students for competing in the Great Handshake Challenge. The Top 10 will now
compete at Central Office on March 19th for a chance to be the winner of the entire county. I
will be working with those Top 10 Students throughout January-March to help them prepare.
During the month of January in guidance, we will be working on goal setting and how to set a
SMART goal. Students will be setting their own goal based on school. It would be a great
opportunity for students to also set a goal at home with their families as well.
Special Areas
Music
4th & 5th Please continue to encourage your child to practice their recorders. Five minutes
can make a big difference when learning a song. I’ve been very pleased with how much
progress all the students are making and the initiative many students are exhibiting in taking
ownership of their learning. Great job! I have recently ordered a few ukuleles for our school!
Over the next few weeks, when we aren’t working on recorder, we will be learning about
fretted string instruments. We will learn basic chords and strum along with a few songs. It
should be a fun time in music class!

2nd & 3rd Rhythm is an integral part of reading and performing music. During the month of
December, 2nd and 3rd grade classes will be focusing on duration. We will be learning about
note and rest values and how we decode them in written music. Math, especially fractions, will
be incorporated throughout these lessons.

K & 1st Our littlest students will be learning about the instruments of the orchestra. We will
focus on the four instrument families: woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings. By the end
of the month, students should be able to classify instruments into these families by how they
are played, what they look like, and how they sound as well as recognize the most common
orchestra instruments.
PE
All 5th graders will have an opportunity to try out for the Jump Rope Team. Practice will be
during school hours and they perform on February 22nd for the entire school. 12 kids will
represent LHES on the team. All students will start preparing for the 1 mile run/fun run in the
spring. We will working on increasing endurance and muscular strength. We will host our
Run/Fun Run on March 22nd.
Library
It is hard to believe the first semester has already passed us by! Starting this month students
will be checking-out "Power Books". Students will be given a range of colors to choose from
based on their individual reading skills. Our goal is to see those skills grow, and the colors
change over the year. Please take time each day to read to or with your child. Reading aloud
gives students the confidence they need to grow as readers. Also, beginning this month
students are going to be asked to become more responsible for their library materials.
Following our PRIDE expectations, students will be expected to return books on time. If a
book is two or more weeks late students will be given a notification to move a magnet for not
being prepared. My goal is to help increase student responsibility. I always tell the students
that the safest place for their book(s) is in their backpack. If they follow that reminder, their
book will always be with them at home and school. I am looking forward to a great second
semester!
