12 The lows and the highs
Activity
Pairwork. Information gap.

Focus
Speaking.

Preparation
Photocopy one worksheet for each pair of students. Cut the
worksheet along the dotted line.

Procedure
• You may want to pre-teach Paralympics (if the word
hasn’t come up in lesson discussion of the Olympics).
Paralympics means Parallel Olympics – an Olympic
competition held after the main Olympics when disabled
competitors can take part. Competitions have been held
since 1960 in Rome.
• Divide the class into A/B pairs. Hand out worksheet A to
the A students and worksheet B to the B students. Ask
students not to show each other their pictures. Point out
that student A has the beginning of a story about Helena
and should tell the story to B who should make notes
about each part. When A has told the story of pictures 1-4,
student B takes over and tells the next part – and so on.
Remind students to use past tenses.

Variations
Students can draw pictures in the blank boxes rather than
making notes.
Students could write the whole story for homework.
