DIFFERENT OF POWER ANALYSIS BETWEEN

COMPUTATION AND TWO WATT – METER METHOD

LAMERA, YRRAL VON G.

ENGR. DANLOR ALORSABES

INTRODUCTION

Most of our equipments or machines today has voltage supply and current which is it can show
or it can give us the power for the equipment or device. Power has many basic formula like P =
V * I ;P = I^2 * R ; P = V^2 / R. But on Three phase we have different type of formula for our
power. It depends if this ‘’wye connected” or “delta connected” on supply or load. In ths three
phase, power analysis can be compute or can be analyze by using computation or two – watt
meter method. Power analysis using computations is like computing the loads to get the total
current in the line which is I = V/R . and after that we will use the formula of P = V * I..
The two-wattmeter method uses two voltage measurements referenced to the same phase (line)
and the two currents flowing into that phase. The assumption is that the three-phase system is
balanced, i.e., the summation of all voltages = 0 V and the summation of all currents = 0 A. This
is true if there is no leakage current from neutral to ground.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

There’s so many ways to compute and analyze of the circuit to get the power. But Two -
watt meter method is one of the easiest method to get the power for three phase system by
connecting to a common point. Instead of getting all the current and total resistances to get the
power in each line. This Two – watt meter requires to have a common point so you can get the
W1 which the power of one loop and W2 for the second loop.
Two Wattmeter Method can be employed to measure the power in a 3 phase, three wire
star or delta connected the balanced or unbalanced load. In Two wattmeter method the current
coils of the wattmeter are connected with any two lines, say R and Y and the potential coil of
each wattmeter is joined on the same line
The power measured by the Two Wattmeter at any instant is the instantaneous power
absorbed by the three loads connected in three phases. In fact, this power is the average power
drawn by the load since the Wattmeter reads the average power because of the inertia of their
moving system.
OBJECTIVE/S

- To know what is the formulas of power in three phase system whether its “wye” or
“delta” connected
- To know what is Two – watt meter method
- Differentiate between Power computation/ formula and Two – watt meter method

SCHEMATIC DRAWING

FACTS & FORMULAE

Three-Phase Wattmeter is used for measuring the power of the three-phase circuit. In three-phase
Wattmeter, the two separate Wattmeter are mounted together in the single unit. Their moving
coils are placed on the same spindle.
Two Wattmeter Method of Power Measurement. Two Wattmeter Method can be employed to
measure the power in a 3 phase, three wire star or delta connected the balanced or unbalanced
load.
Two watt meter Method is easiest to use because it has the advantage of getting total three phase
power faster than using the basic formulas. But, Two watt meter only measures total power
unlike the computation that can compute all the power in the circuit. And, Two watt meter
method has the disadvantage for 4 wire systems because we cannot use this method for this one
because the signs of W1 and W2 must be identified and noted down correctly otherwise it may
lead to the wrong result.

“ Two – watt meter method “

SUMMARY

We know how to analyze the power by using basic formula and two watt meter by knowing all
the formula and rules and steps of those two methods.
We differentiate the two by knowing that Two – watt meter method is easier to use when
computing the total power for three phase. But, we cannot use this method in four wire system
and it only measure total power unlike basic computation or formula can solved all the power in
the system wheter it is three wire or four wire system.
