Processing of Composite materials 06-89-590-31 Fall 2018

Processing of Composite Materials- 06-89-590-31

Fall 2018
This course on processing of composite materials will teach the student to understand and use the
state of the art analytical tools to design the manufacturing process of composite structures. The
focus of this course will be on the process design for a specific application. In this course, students
will learn how process design is intimately linked to structural design.
Course Content
Composite processing overview. Resin materials. Reinforcements. Overview of mechanics and
polymer composites characterization. Lay-up. Filament winding. Pultrusion. Liquid composite
molding. Thermoplastic composites. Resin properties: cure kinetics and rheology, voids,
consolidation, residual stress. Polymer nanocomposites.

Course Outcome
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
• Describe the characteristics and the manufacturing principles of a composite structures
• Define the important physical phenomena observed during composites processing
• Explain the interactions between the phenomena during composite processing
• Evaluate processing costs and select the best manufacturing method for a application
• Set and optimize process parameters
Assessments
Quiz (2) 30%
Homework 15%
Project (1) 15%
Final (1) 40%

The quiz tests will be closed book and will consist of comprehension questions and short problems.

The project will be done individually based on a couple of recently published papers and will
consist of a final report and/or one oral presentation.
