ADJ 1.01 STARTING UP GENERATORS, BRUSHES 12-27-63 CONSTRUCTION DEPARTMENT @ HAUGHTON ELEVATOR COMPANY @ DIVISION OF TOLEDO SCALE CORPORATION © TOLEDO, OMIO c) ie) ") BRUSH STAGCER Brushes should be staggered so as to wear the commutator evenly, and not to wear it in grooves. Manufacturers recommend that the brush holders on one adjacent pair of studs be adjusted so that the brushes "track", C—I [—] “and That the brush holdérs on-vhe second set of studs be adjusted so that the brushes on this pair_ride on the space between the brushes on the, first pair as shown in-Pigare’h. 7 BRUSH szaT If brushes have not been fitted to conform with the radius of the commtator they should be sanded in with sandpaper. The sandpaper should be cut in strips and inserted between brush and commutator with the sand side next to the brush. Care must be used to hold the sand paper to.conform to the radius of the commtator ao that the entire brush face will be fit to the commutator and not have the corners of the brush sanded off. Put extra pressure on the brush when pulling the sand paper in the direction of armature rotation. Lift the brush off the sand paper when pulling the paper in the direction against armature rotation. Use #0 sandpaper to fit the brushes roughly, then finish with #2/0 or #3/0 sand paper. Use only a good grade of sand paper. In no case should emery paper or emery cloth be used. Brush fits should be further improved by the use of a small amount of Brush Seater applied to the commutator while driven by the motor. This is necessary because the sand-paper fits the brush to a radius slightly Larger than the commutator. The brush springs do not exert sufficient pressure for fast working of the brush seater so it is suggested that additional pressure be applied manually to each brush so as to hasten action. After the Brush Seater has done its work, it should be blown off to expedite polishing of the commutator. After fitting is completed it will be some time before the commitator and brushes take a polish and acquire a "fit", This ultimate fit is necessary on generators for satisfactory operation. It will be necessary for a generator to run for several hours (or even a full day) in order to obtain a sufficiently well polished fit. Once the commutator takes a polish, brush seater or stone should not be used again. BRUSH PRESSURE The lige of brushes depends to @ considerable degree upon the brush pressure which is maintained. Too light a pressure will reduce the life of the brush even more than too heavy @ pressure. Usually it will not be necessary to measure brush pressure as adjustment provided is usually within reasonable limits. How- ever, it ie well to change the adjustment as brushes wear, For your information brush pressure should be from 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 pounds per square inch of brush area. Page 2 ADIL. OL 9225-64 BRUSH TYPE General Electric Generators. should have B-253 Brushes. This is a G.E. brush, Brushes 5/8 inch thick or thicker should be split. Imperial Generators should have a National Carbon N1 grade brush. Brushes 5/8 inch thick or thicker should be split. STARTING, UP GENERATORS, CONNECTIONS Berra NERATOR PIELD CONNECTIONS FOR REGULATOR CONTROL | 12-27-63 CONSTRUCTION DEPARTUENT @ HAUGHTON ELEVATOR COMPANY @ DIVISION OF TOLEDO SCALE CORPORATION @ TOLEDO, OHO When re-connecting the fields of a variable-voltage generator for use in the regulator bridge circuit, the obvious method is to break the connection between the second and third poles and bring out these two leads, However, this has the serious disadvantage that, if one of the field sections should become disconnected, the generator armature would be subject to damag- ing magnetic stresses from the remaining poles. For this reason, it {s necessary that the fields be connected according to the diagrams below, which results in adjacent poles being connected into opposite sides of the regulator bridge. New connections are indicated by heavy ‘lines, Schematic arrangement of fields before re-connection. A I Schematic arrangement of fields after re-connection. Bg nae EZ
