Mental Disorders:

Causes and Effects

Kirsten Glanville
Did you know that approximately one in five adults
struggle with these problems every year? Do you think
you know some in your life who suffers with this? Did
you know that one of the effects of mental disorders
can be as dramatic as talking your own, or even
another person’s life?

What you feel today
adds up to life

Without help or support of any kind, people

often look toward more dangerous or
harmful options.

Our Genetics (DNA)
“This study demonstrates the
influence of stress on the
developing fetus and how
stress can “turn on” gene
settings which can lead to
anxiety. This particular study
by Hansen suggests that the
environment can change the
DNA and leave someone
with a genetic predisposition
for an anxiety disorder later
in life, ” (Gronley, "Genetic
Mental Illnesses")

pathways or
circuits in the
brain can lead to
problems with
how the brain

information and
may result in
abnormal mood,
thinking,
perception, or
behavior.”
(Goldberg, "The
Brain and Mental
Illness")
“If a person puts his or her hand near something hot, the sense of touch
tells the brain about the heat, and the brain sends a message to the
muscles of the arm to move the hand away.” (Goldberg) 6
The Environment
“Mental illness is largely caused by social crises such as unemployment,
childhood abuse, and abandonment …” (Knapton, "Mental Illness Mostly
Caused by Life Events Not Genetics, Argue Psychologists")

My SLE hours were spent obtaining
information about how mental disorders
affect people’s daily life and the causes of
those disorders.
My SLE
HOW?

● Interviews with people involved in this

area of expertise.

● Research on area organizations that

focus on this issue

● Participation in/out of school on field

trips to learn more about this issue from
professionals. Talking to other schools’
student
● I helped within my SLE by participating in a new group that is in creation now called
G-Matter. ‘G-Matter’ stands for Garinger Matter which means that the lives of
students’ and teachers’ at Garinger matter, all lives do.

● Researching this project is that to see a change, you have to change yourself for my
takeaway.
