THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
Leadership is a essential element that determines organization’s success and
effectiveness over all firms. The examination of literature of Organization's culture
and leadership researchers found that culture and leadership are individually linked
to the organization performance. They also insisted that leadership develops the
organization culture, whereas organization culture has an effect on developing of
organization’s leadership that shows the close integration between both leadership
and organization's culture.
There are 2 forms of leaders, Transactional leaders and Transformational leaders,
Transactional leaders follow the organization culture and follow the prevailing
procedures, processes and rules, but the transformational leaders begin by
understating the current culture and then try to reorganize their new vision, values,
norms and shared assumption to form a new culture. There are 3 main roles for
transformational leaders, 1) to acknowledge the requirement to revitalization, 2)
build new vision, 3)regulating change, few other researchers came up with 4
characteristics for transformational leaders they call it the four I’s, 1) Idealized
Influence, 2) Inspirational motivation, 3) Individualized consideration
4) intellectual stimulation.
Mapping those qualities and characteristics to Satya Nadella compared to x-CEO
of Microsoft Steve Ballmer, Ballmer leadership style was more into fierce and
aggressive competitiveness, that break innovation and creativity, for instance the
“employee stack ranking” that encourage backstabbing every other’s rather than
focusing on performing and innovate. On the other hand, Nadella came and
introduced himself as a normal an ordinary person, higher focus on people
learning, cooperative, creativity, stimulate intellectuality, and goal oriented rather
than aggressiveness and competitive culture that used to dominate during
Ballmer’s days, indeed Satya had fulfilled the 4 characteristics (4i’s).

Opening letter to staff – there'll ne'er be another probability

A CEO’s letter to staff is extremely powerful communication tool. In one

instrument, the chief operating officer will accomplish some or all of the
following:
a. offer the vision from the corporate cockpit to each worker and make business
awareness.
b. B.List out the challenges facing the corporate and also the CEO’s prioritization
c. gift a thought of offensive the challenges, in order that together all staff
apprehend wherever to focus their efforts (rallying the troops)
d. Declare the vision for consequent few years, and also the CEO’s arrange on a
way to execute thereon vision
e. gift a glimpse to staff on the CEO’s inner temperament
f. Showcase their leadership vogue

A CEO’s 1st letter becomes even additional necessary. the primary letter offers a
tabula rasa to the chief operating officer to sketch out plans, get the folks behind
the corporate and shine the spotlight on the foremost necessary company
initiatives.

Satya’s gap letter to Microsoft staff

Satya Nadella sent out his 1st letter to regarding a hundred twenty five thousand
Microsoft staff on Feb four, as presently as he took over as chief operating officer.
From a careful analysis of the letter, candidly I found it fell manner short from the
angle of increasing the powerful “CEO’s 1st letter to employees”.

My conclusion is predicated on the subsequent observations:

a. A tenth of the letter contained nebulous statements (such as “we ar headed for
bigger places”.
b. One statement was confusing. If the take care of Nokia wasn't complete, why
state it? Was it supposed for competition to require note? Or was it a sign of
Microsoft’s intrude on devices and mobility? Why mention the name “Nokia”
c. I might have expected to ascertain a number of challenges listed, and also the
CEO’s prioritization of the challenges. The letter might even have enclosed a
path on accomplishing those goals, with a timeline.
d. Four statements indicate however Satya can work with others to attain some
goals (unspecified). there's NO indication within the letter on what Satya can
do, direct, supervise, fix, guarantee or otherwise manage on his own. As a CEO,
Satya ought to have used this “first letter” to FIRMLY state HIS approach.
e. From here on, all successes can come in Satya’s account, even as all failures
will be fastened on Satya.
There was no clear, focused, “call to action”, investment the workers together.

f. regarding hr of the letter contained innocuous statements. in a very letter like

this one, these statements spend precious realty and facilitate in losing reader
attention. Statements like “everyone has to do our greatest work”, “many firms
be after to alter the world”, etc. might are eliminated.

Additionally, a minimum of doubly Satya says “like everybody else” and goes on
to state an element in common with the workers. This shows that he has no airs
regarding him and doesn't take into account himself “above” others that
employment for the corporate. whereas this is often fine, the workers conjointly
wish to grasp what makes Satya totally different from others. This letter is that the
place to showcase the distinction. The distinction is that the reason why Satya and
not anyone else, has been appointed the chief operating officer.

g. the massive modification for the corporate with Satya’s appointment could be a
forceful modification in chief operating officer temperament. From a self-
driven, profit-focused, authoritarian temperament of Steve Ballmer, the workers
would currently be diode by a peaceful, steady, “participative/collaborative”
leadership-styled Satya Nadella. i assumed this could have highlighted
somewhere, even though to let the workers apprehend that they have not adapt.

The effective elements of Satya’s letter

Satya’s letter loudly proclaims the cooperative, participative and non-disruptive
sort of leadership that his temperament brings.

About twenty sixth of the letter contains emotional statements. Such statements
convey a sense of trust, responsibility, and sincerity and show the writer’s worth
system. The genuineness that's on show tells Pine Tree State that nobody else
wrote the letter for Satya.

Such a pacesetter “pulls” folks in conjunction with him.

About twelve-tone system of the letter contained new info on Satya’s personal
make-up. This shows he's quite open and not keep of claiming that he's still within
the quest of learning.

There is a regard to some high-value activities as a part of One Microsoft strategy.

maybe this is often one thing that's well-known at intervals the corporate and this
was well-highlighted.

In conclusion
The biggest question that the letter doesn't address is however Satya plans to
require Microsoft back to the highest. whereas Steve or the Board might have
spoken or written regarding this, the CEO’s 1st LETTER would are the best place
for Satya to squarely lay out the present scenario, his plans and what the workers
should do to assist accomplish those plans.

From a leadership perspective, clear vision of the goal, solid understanding of the
team task to be achieved and clarity of team member roles ar needed to be
effective.

As a leadership communication tool, this letter might are simpler.

DISCUSSION
There are five aspects that made him an excellent leader and an extraordinary
person too.

1. An Avid Reader
One of the noted quotes of Harry S. Truman, former US president is, “Not all
readers are leaders but all leaders are readers.” One of the enormous qualities of a
leader is his/her habit of learning. And an individual learns either from his
experiences or through others. Reading books can make you someone a better
leader as Nadella’s huge success as a visionary leader is a prime example. Satya
Nadella is an avid reader and his office looks like a small bookshop consisting of
dozens of books.
In his own words, “I read a few pages here and a few pages there. There are a few
books, of course, that you read end-to-end. But without books, I can’t live.” Just
after becoming the CEO of Microsoft, Nadella asked company’s top executives to
read Marshall Rosenberg’s book Nonviolent Communication that was based on
emphatic collaboration.

2. Look Beyond the Horizon

Satya Nadella was the pinnacle of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise cluster. He
had a vision and belief that cloud computing was reaching to be a giant issue
within the future. That’s why Microsoft endowed billions in fitting information
centers round the world to support its cloud-ready merchandise.
Another nice step was remodeling Microsoft’s original computer code business
from permanent licenses to, wherever revenue is generated just the once, to
subscriptions, wherever revenue is revenant. While Microsoft’s game console X-
Box was a giant issue before Nadella came aboard, he created certain that it
continues to rival Nintendo and Sony PlayStation and remained a rival instead
of bowing all the way down to those giants within the business.

3. Making the Right Moves at the Right Time

Microsoft’s LinkedIn acquisition is the largest in Microsoft’s history and a great

buy so the least. Industry pundits termed it as a masterstroke from Nadella as
LinkedIn is now the world’s largest professional networking service. Many other
companies like Google were also thinking about making the acquisition or merger
but Microsoft clinched the deal in front of their eyes. Microsoft benefited greatly
from the merger as its shares rose in the start of 2017 and showed considerable
gains in cloud computing and other areas of focus too as it absorbed the LinkedIn
once the acquisition was finalized on December 8, 2016.

4. Make Every Second Count

Nadella is deeply protecting of his time and as he is aware of the worth of it fine.
The half-hour he spends on a treadmill is that the solely time he's alone however he
uses it too fruitfully puzzling over what to try and do next.

Rest of the day he's all busy with all types of engagement. It will embody meeting
with some government official, making ready a oratory, at an academic event with
youngsters or meeting with Microsoft’s executives at the Redmond, American state
headquarters of Microsoft. Controlling a corporation that includes a presence in
192 countries round the world is not any mean accomplishment. He makes long
journeys to comprehensive destinations simply to assess what the wants of his
customers as he terms vital. His visit to a thuslar-powered web restaurant in
African country was a testament to the current reality as went there to grasp the
however his customers use school so he will serve them higher within the future.
He termed that journey price visiting and not a waste of your time.

5. Nurturing a Strong Conpany Culture

In his book, Hit Refresh, Nadella has dedicated an entire chapter concerning the
culture he transmitted from man. Steve Ballmer, the person he replaced because
the chief executive officer of Microsoft in February 2014 and mould it consistent
with his preferences. He modified the rigid culture to a growth attitude in 3 distinct
ways that.

He created certain there's a curiosity issue among all the staff to satisfy customer’s
demands. Secondly, Nadella infused a culture of seeking diversity and inclusion in
order that workers still improve and become receptive learning concerning own
biases and dynamic their behaviors.
CONCLUSION
The leadership vogue you adopt in several things will influence each however well
your cluster accomplishes its goals and the way well it maintains itself. Your
leadership vogue during a given scenario consists of your behavior patterns as you
contend with the cluster. These patterns emerge as you succeed or fail in braving
cluster events. Eventually, most people develop a dominant vogue for all cluster
things. Through expertise, cluster members expect-even predict-certain behavior
patterns from US. Our vogue is that the one that they understand US to show once
we lead. it's not what we have a tendency to believe our vogue to be that's
necessary, however what our followers believe it to be. They react in step with
their construct of our vogue.

Leadership Studies the main target of leadership studies has shifted significantly
over the last century. Early studies tried to see inherent traits of leaders that set
them with the exception of the overall public. These tries resulted in lists of
"essential" leadership traits. However, the "essential" traits varied significantly
from list to list and there have been exceptions to any or all the essential traits.. As
cluster conditions modified, varied cluster members assumed positions of
leadership. The success of the cluster in accomplishing its goals and maintaining
itself became the responsibility of the cluster rather than one leader. Still, in several
teams a delegated leader is predicted to steer beneath a range of things. For these
leaders to be best, they have to switch leadership designs because the scenario
demands. many theories of leadership vogue were planned throughout the Nineteen
Seventies to assist leaders match vogue to scenario. The theories is roughly
classified into 3 categories: autocratic vs. democratic leadership, task vs.
maintenance leadership, and leadership role typologies.
