GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
BE - SEMESTER–VII (NEW) - EXAMINATION – SUMMER 2018
Subject Code:2171303 Date:01/05/2018
Subject Name:Industrial Water Pollution & Control
Time:02.30 PM to 05.00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

Q.1 (a) Explain the consequences when untreated or partially treated wastewater is 03
discharged into rivers?
(b) Differentiate between effluent standards and stream standards. 04
(c) Suggest the measures to reduce the strength of the wastewater. 07

Q.2 (a) Explain off-line equalization. 03

(b) Enlist the sources of ‘Oil Pollution’. 04
(c) Explain the basic objectives of setting up a CETP? Describe limitations of CETPs. 07
OR

(c) “Land as an ultimate point of disposal”- explain the points to be considered. 07

Q.3 (a) Draw a neat sketch of “DO sag curve”. And define “DO Sag curve” and “DO 03
deficit”
(b) State the objectives of proportioning of industrial waste? 04
(c) Write down the manufacturing process, sources and treatment of wastewater for 07
Fertilizer industry.
OR
Q.3 (a) List down the primary benefits of pollution control. 03
(b) Differentiate between “criteria” and “standards”. 04
(c) Name seven major methods of neutralization. Explain in detail caustic soda 07
treatment.
Q.4 (a) Explain the term “Population Equivalent”. 03
(b) What are the consequences when the limits for following parameters are exceeded: 04
(i) BOD (ii) Oil & grease
(c) What is Volume Reduction? Enlist the different techniques of Volume Reduction 07
& Explain any one in detail.

strong industrial waste.
(b) Write a note on ‘Waste management hierarchy’. 04
(c) Given an option to select any environmental sink, which one will you select for 07
discharge of effluents? Why?
1
Q.5 (a) Explain disposal into oceans. 03
(b) Explain the phenomena of Lake stratification and overturn. 04
(c) A phosphorous balance is to be prepared for a lake showing signs of eutrophication. 07
The outflow from the lake is controlled so that there is approximately same level in
the lake. The annual rainfall is 0.5 m and evaporation from the lake is 0.7 m. Runoff
to the lake is 0.125 m/year from a watershed area of 2300 km sq. The phosphorous
content of the rain water is 0.01 mg/l. A total of 3.8 m3/s of water is withdrawn from
the lake for water supply and 70% of it is returned to the lake with an additional
amount of phosphorous of 2.2 mg/l. Phosphorous lost through sediment is first order
process with a constant k’ of 0.003 day-1. The phosphorous content of the lake was
measured as 0.09 mg/l. If the surface area and average depth of the lake are 130 km
sq and 15 m respectively, Estimate the phosphorous loading due to runoff. By how
much should the wastewater loading be reduced to get phosphorus concentration of
lake of 0.03 mg/l.
OR
Q.5 (a) How evaporation is useful for treatment of strong industrial waste? 03
(b) Classify lakes based on productivity and biological zones. 04
(c) Derive the equation for steady state concentration of pollution in a lake. 07
