Electrical Engineering

Qualifying Examination Petition Form

Students who were originally admitted to the M.S. (only) and Engineer’s degree programs may
petition the EE Graduate Admissions Committee for a change of status to the Ph.D. program after
successfully petitioning to take the Qualifying Exam.
Eligibility/Requirements
 The student must have maintained a grade-point average of at least 3.50 in graduate-level,
Engineering courses at Stanford for at least two quarters of full-time study (excluding the
summer).
 The petition must be accompanied by a letter of support from a faculty advisor who is a
Member of the Academic Council at Stanford, who agrees to supervise the student's Ph.D.
research and provides evidence of financial support.

STEP 1 (Due October 15, 2010)

1. Complete this form and turn it in to Packard 173 with the following materials:
2. A current (unofficial) Stanford transcript
3. A one-page statement of purpose
4. A letter of support from a faculty member who is a Member of the Academic Council at
Stanford (non-EE faculty are OK). The letter should be sent directly to the EE Admissions
Office via email (admissions@ee.stanford.edu). The letter should clearly state the faculty’s
willingness to supervise and provide financial support for the student’s Ph.D. research.
STEP 2 (As soon as possible after the petition in Step 1 has been approved)
Apply to take the Qualifying Exam via the online application form found here:

STEP 3 (Due December 14, 2010)
1. Submit the “Graduate Program Authorization Petition” form via Axess.
2. Submit two (2) additional general letters of recommendation. The letters should be sent
directly to the EE Admissions Office via e-mail (admissions@ee.stanford.edu).

Please note: The university assesses a fee of $125 for adding a new degree program. The fee will
be added to the student's account at the time the form is received by the Registrar's Office. GRE
scores from the M.S. application may be used to satisfy the Ph.D. application.

Timeline: From the MSO to Taking the Qualifying Exam
September 20 – October 15, 2010
Petitions to take the qualifying exam (in January 2011) will be accepted. The last day to submit a
petition and all supporting materials is October 15, 2010 at 5:00PM.

Early November
Students will be informed of the petition decision. Apply for the Quals Exam via the online
application form as soon as your Quals Petition has been approved.

December 14, 2010


Deadline to submit the Graduate Authorization Petition form and all supporting documents listed in
Step 2.

Early January 2010


Ask your recommenders to review your application in the online application evaluation system. If
your recommenders are not EE faculty members, please have them e-mail
admissions@ee.stanford.edu with a request to review your application.

January 10-14, 2010


Take the Qualifying Exam. Quals results will be sent to you via e-mail, along with important
information pertaining to your results.
