BIOGRAPHY OF ANTHONY OLIVER

SOCIAL ENTREPRENUER, CVIC

Anthony Oliver is a Real State Developer and Founder of Community
Venture Investment Corporation (CVIC), a for-profit company that
specializes in the acquisition, development, and management of multi-
family housing in low-to-moderate-income communities based in Chicago.
Founded in 2002, CVIC (a licensed General Contractor) seeks to put
people first and improve human potential using a profitable “earned-
income” social investment business model as its formula for building better
communities.

In 2006, CVIC successfully completed the Lawndale Restoration project

within budget ($10.3M). The company purchased and restored 109 units
consisting of buildings located in the North Lawndale area. As a result, it
was the recipient of the prestigious “Good Neighbors Award in 2009”.
Currently, CVIC’s portfolio has successfully evolved from a smaller
residential to a predominantly larger multi-unit affordable rental property
model with units located on the west and south sides of Chicago.

To build on his passion deepening the impact in the community, Oliver

acquired Alexander Movers (AM) in 2010- a residential and commercial
Anthony’ Oliver’s mantra:
moving business that has served the community since 1971. AM has a “Grow People as We Grow”
strong reputation for hiring; which supports his positive brand recognition.
Under Oliver’s leadership, AM has successfully implemented a strategy
that drives strengthening its infrastructure for sustainability and growth.

“Meeting the most pressing needs in our communities requires sustainable employment and housing, putting people first
and offering employment opportunity at the deepest levels which includes the hardest to employ clearly addresses a
fundamental human and community need- the economic will inevitable life the social tide ”said Oliver .

Prior to CVIC and Alexander Movers, Oliver built and nurtured the growth of Street Wise Inc. (1992-2005).
Street Wise Inc. was founded (in 1992) to provide economic solutions to homelessness. His tenure included
Circulation Director, Executive Director, Chief Executive Officer/Publisher and finally Board Member, where
he Chaired the Building Committee which was responsible for the sale of the Street Wise office building that
was located on Michigan Ave (at 1331), in Chicago’s South Loop area. It was purchased in 1996, for approx.
225K, with income earned from the sale of Street Wise newspaper (100%) and renovated after a
successfully capital campaign (700K) supported by Chicago’s philanthropic community-at the orgin of the
historic South Loop renovation. In 2005, the property sold for over $2M, leaving a significant reserve to
propel StreetWise’s growth into the future. Oliver transitioned into the private industry with a vision to build
the next generation of Social Enterprises from the bottom up!

When a social entity put its social purpose first but has an “earned income” funding base and for-profit social business
model” it will enjoy the real flexibility to address the full complexities of its social niche”-the earned income producer Must
represent a minimal of 75% (or over) of a social entity’s budget. This is my definition of a Social Enterprise –said Oliver

Oliver’s passion to carve a niche market serving the hardest to employ in Chicago and beyond (using an
earned income model) attracted the attention of many philanthropic and academic institutions. In 1998,
Oliver was awarded a 3-year Senior Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurs, a “Denali Fellow” (which is a
collaboration between Harvard and Northwestern Universities) where he earned the rare distinction of
“Denali Social Entrepreneur” in 2001. In September 2017, Street Wise celebrated its 25th year (serving over
12,000 men and women) and Oliver was formally titled its “Founding Executive Director”!

Today, using a return on cash social business model and 100% of earned income, Oliver successfully addresses the
issues of housing and jobs in low to moderate income areas in Chicago. “We can now concentrate on philanthropy and
the private investor market to seed social enterprise ideas that focuses on lifting people at the bottom of our communities,
bottoms up!” said Oliver. In 1997, Oliver founded the National Street Newspaper Assoc, which still stands today!
