Alyssa Francis: Inside

the Life of A Senior

during her last

highschool with

Francis is involved in this year’s
musical “Rock of Ages” as a protester. She
also was in the past two previous musicals,
“Music Man” and “Beauty and the Beast”
as a lead dancer.
She participates in musical
because of her love for dancing and
spending time with friends. Outside of
school, Francis enjoys hiking and
swimming.
After graduation, Francis is
planning on attending York College for
Secondary Education. Her inspiration for
becoming a teacher comes from her past
Chemistry teacher, his attitude about
teaching and style made her look into the
career of being a teacher.
Francis wishes to teach social
studies focusing on American History
because she does best with that subject
currently in high school. Her dream grade
to teach is seniors.
Overall, with many goals and
accomplishments, Alyssa Francis takes on
a personal duty to cheer people up.
“I love to make people laugh,”
she said, continuing that whenever she
sees someone who looks sad, she tries her
best to make them laugh and cheer them
up.
Four Sides Respond To Shooting
The Parkland shooting sparked several reactions at Red Lion
High School including an outdoor protest, indoor memorial, an
NRA counter-protest, and those who remained still

14 at Red Lion Senior High School.
13 students participated in the
outdoor protest with the knowledge
they would receive a 3-hour Saturday
detention for their actions.
Around 150 students went to
a memorial at the Fitzkee Center,
which was non-political and
dedicated to the 17 victims of the
Parkland shooting.

Stop Using Mental Illnesses
As Adjectives

The use of mental
disorders as adjectives in
today’s society is
disheartening as people look
to draw attention to themselves and
disregard who they are hurting in the
process.
Walking down the halls, I can
hear students call out to their friend's
complaints of “anxiety” for an upcoming
test or “depression” after a particularly bad
day.
It infuriates me that people use
terms like “anxiety,” “depression” and
“O.C.D.” so casually.
These terms are diseases, diseases
that people deal with and face.
According to Life Science, about
1 in 5 teens in the United States have a
severe mental illness. That is only 20% of
the teenage population.
Yet so many more students claim
these mental illnesses, not thinking about the
harmful impact of their words and what they
are saying.
These are dangerous waters that
people are crossing as they not only claim to
“be” a disease but also the overabundance in
today’s society to self-diagnose.
People do not get a bad headache
and say ‘my cancer is acting up’ when they
do not have cancer, so why do people do it
with mental illnesses?
According to Dr. Srini Phillary in
his 2010 Psychology Today article The
Dangers of Self-Diagnosis, “When you
self-diagnose, you are essentially assuming
that you know the subtleties that diagnosis
constitutes.”
The ability and the want to have a
label and put attention on oneself has taken
over people’s thoughts of common sense.
Do not self-diagnose. It is not fair to
the real people suffering under the weight
of the disease that was just used so lightly to
describe the stress of the test or the
heartbreak of a breakup.
That is not real anxiety, and that is
not real depression.
Other than anxiety and depression
the most common mental illness misused as
an adjective is O.C.D., and the way people
misuse it heartbreaking.
People do not get a bad headache and say ‘my
cancer is acting up’ when they do not have
cancer, so why do people do it with mental
illnesses?
No mental illness is positive, and no
mental illness is cute, yet O.C.D. has been
portrayed that way in the public eye by
people who do not have the disorder.
People with O.C.D. do not just want
things to be perfect and neat; it is
compulsory and repetitive. It is so much
more than organizing your school supplies
and have neat notes; it is washing your
hands until they are raw and bleed because
you can not stop.
O.C.D. is a form of anxiety, and it
is a disease.
It is not cute and not something to
be used lightly.
Mental illnesses can no longer
lowered to the used as adjectives. It
belittles the pain, and the suffering of
people with mental disorders go through to
give justification and attention to those
who know nothing about what they are
saying.
