(Esta es una información nueva.)
El pasado simple se utiliza cuando se da mayor información: Martin se estrelló con su
coche del año pasado.
(Esta es información vieja.)

El presente perfecto se utiliza cuando el tiempo no es específico: Yo he visto esa
película ya.
(No sabemos cuando.)
El pasado simple se utiliza cuando el tiempo es claro: yo vi esa película el jueves.
(Sabemos exactamente cuándo.)

El presente perfecto se utiliza con y desde entonces, cuando las acciones no han
terminado aún: he vivido en Victoria desde hace cinco años.
(Sigo viviendo en Victoria.)
El pasado simple se utiliza con y desde entonces, cuando las acciones ya han
terminado: yo vivía en Victoria desde hace cinco años

perfect and past simple.

The present perfect is used when the time is not over: I saw three movies
this week.
(This week is not over yet.)
The simple past is used when the time is over: I saw three movies last
week.
(Last week is over.)

The present perfect is often used when giving recent news: Martin has
crashed his new car.
(This is a new information.)
The simple past is used when there is more information: Martin crashed his
car last year.
(This is old information.)

The present perfect is used when the time is not specific: I've seen that
movie already.
(Do not know when.)
The simple past is used when the weather is clear: I saw this film on
Thursday.
(We know exactly when.)

over: I have lived in Victoria for five years.
(I still live in Victoria.)
The simple past is used and since then, when the actions have already
done: I lived in Victoria for five years
