Planning: 2nd block

Introduction: Welcome to Wellness! I am excited to have you and look forward to


discovering healthy choices and lifestyle changes that you can implement in your daily
routine. This class is designed to explore the role and importance of health, wellness and
physical activity in the lives of our students. This program will explore all three aspects of
health (social, emotional, and physical). I look forward to working with the students at
Holloway and want each of my students to leave the program with an appreciation of
wellness and learn to honor that appreciation by being active for a lifetime!

Course Outline: The units we will study will be in line with these standards:

Standard 1: The student will demonstrate the ability to implement decision making and
goal setting skills to promote his/her personal health and wellness, thereby enhancing
quality of life for himself/herself and those around him/her.

Standard 2: The student will understand the importance of personal hygiene practices as
related to healthy living.

Standard 3: The student will understand the role of body systems as related to healthy
living.

Standard 4: The student will understand the relationship of physical activity and rest to
healthy living
Standard 5: The student will understand the relationship of nutrition to healthy living.

Standard 6: The student will understand the contributions of family relationships to


healthy living.

Standard 7: The student will understand the stages of human growth and development.

Standard 8: The student will understand the importance of positive self-concept and
interpersonal relationships for healthy living.

Standard 9: The student will understand attitudes and behaviors for preventing and
controlling disease.
Standard 10: The student will understand attitudes and behaviors for preventing injuries
and deaths from injury.

Standard 11: The student will understand appropriate care for injuries and sudden illness.

Standard 12: The student will understand the appropriate action to take when personal
safety is threatened.

Standard 13: The student will understand appropriate and inappropriate uses of chemical
substances and the effects of substance use and abuse.

Standard 14: The student will recognize environmental practices, products and resources
that affect personal and community health and promotes healthy living.

Classroom Rules:
1. ALL CELL PHONES WILL BE PLACED IN THE POCKET AS YOU PICK UP
YOUR FOLDER (no ear buds or cell phones)
A. 1st Offense: If you do not place your phone in that pocket and you are
caught with one you will be asked to put it on my desk and a parent
will be called.
B. 2nd Offense: You will be sent to an administrator
2. Positive language only
3. Respect yourself, me, and your classmates
4. Come to class prepared ( pencil and paper)
5. No Food or drinks in the classroom
6. Sit up straight (No laying your head down at any time).
Assignments: Each unit will be made up of the following types of assignments:
1. Activity- In each unit you will be required to complete at least one, if not
several, activities to help you see the connection between the book and the
real world. These activities are designed to be challenging, however all these
require is participation and effort! This is key to succeeding in this class.
2. Homework/Project- You WILL have classwork AT LEAST 3 times a week. It
will be rare to have actual take home homework but it may be assigned
occasionally. Majority of work will be done during class time. Makeup work
is only taken if students have been absent, in that case, they are granted 5
days to make the work up.
3. Bell work- Bell work MUST be completed each day. This is for a grade. Bell
work will be graded every Friday. Students who are absent should make up
the bell work missed as well.
4. Test-Almost every Friday, a test will be given over the chapter, sections, or
topics learned for the week. Test will be made up of chapter questions,
section review questions, matching, and short answer questions.
5. Materials:
1. Binder/folder with paper inside
2. Pencil
3. Paper

Grading: Grading Scale is earned by points earned divided by total points available.
The mid-term and final exam count 15%.

A (93-100) Students who receive an A complete all homework assignments, completes Bell
work when it is due, makes a B or higher on each test and quiz, and makes an A or a B on
the final. This student also has high attendance, participates in all activities and has a deep
understanding of the material.

B (85-92) Students who receive a B complete all homework assignments, completes Bell
work when it is due, makes a C or higher on each test and quiz and makes an A or a B on the
final. This student also has fairly high attendance, participates actively in all activities, and
works hard to understand the material.

C (78-84) Students who receive a C complete little homework, completes some of the bell
work, performs mediocre on tests and quizzes, and makes a B or C on the final. This student
typically has poor attendance, sometimes participates in activities, has little to offer in
group discussions and understands the basics of the material.

D (70-77) Students who receive a D completes few of the homework assignments, does not
complete bell work, performs poorly on tests and quizzes, and performs poorly on the final.
This student typically has poor attendance, does not participate in activities, and does not
have an understanding of the material.

F (Below 69) Students who receive an F shows little effort in the class. They do not
complete daily assignments, homework, or bell work. This student does not have an
understanding of the material.

Procedures:
1. Beginning: You must be SITTING in a seat by the time the bell rings. Pick up
your bell work as you enter the room and complete your bell work on your
own SILENTLY. Get all materials you need before class starts (pencil, paper,
folder, etc.).
2. End: You will not pack up until I dismiss you. You need to make sure you
have your homework assignment/or classwork turned in to your folder
before you leave. Clean up your area before you leave the classroom. PLEASE
throw away all trash (or recycle) on your way out.
3. Bathroom: Do not ask to use the restroom the first and last 10 minutes of
class. Only ask to use the restroom if it is an emergency. THERE IS NO
REASON TO GO TO THE VENDING MACHING DURING CLASS. Do that after
class.
Policies:
1. Absences: If you are absent, get your notes from a fellow student. You can
pick up missed assignments from the folder from your class period.
2. Attendance: Attendance in this class is IMPORTANT. Follow the attendance
policy in the student handbook.
3. Cell Phone Use: Cell phone use is ONLY allowed when the teacher clearly
communicates you may use your device. It will only be used for academic
purposes. Your phone must be placed in the slot assigned to you. You will not
be allowed to have your phone on your desk. If you are using your phone
during class and I have not said you can do so
i. 1st Offense: If you do not place your phone in that pocket and you
are caught with one you will be asked to put it on my desk and a
parent will be called.
ii. 2nd Offense: You will be sent to an administrator
