PROBLEM SET 1: PHYSICS I
Newton’s Laws of Motion
1. Find the weight on Earth of a body whose mass is (a) 3 kg, (b) 200 g, (c) 50 slug.
2. An object with a mass of 5 kg is to be given an upward acceleration of 0.30 m/s2 by a rope pulling straight upward
on it. What must be the tension in the rope?
3. A 140N horizontal force is needed to pull a 60.0kg box across the horizontal floor at constant speed. What is the
coefficient of friction between the floor and box?
4. A body slides down a rough plane inclined to the horizontal at 30◦. If 70% of the initial potential energy is
dissipated during the descent, find the coefficient of sliding friction.
5. A constant force acts on a 5.0 kg object and reduces its velocity from 7.0m/s to 3.0m/s in a time of 3 seconds.
Find the force.
6. A 400 g block with an initial speed of 80 cm/s slides along a horizontal tabletop against a friction force of 0.70N.
(a) How far will it slide before stopping? (b) What is the coefficient of friction between the block and the
tabletop?
7. A 70 kg box is slid along the floor by a 400N force. The coefficient of friction between the box and the floor is
0.50 when the box is sliding. Find the acceleration of the box.
8. A 20kg box sits on an incline 30degrees with the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between box and
incline is 0.30. Find the acceleration of the box down the incline.
9. A cord passing over and easily turned pulley (one that is both massless and frictionless) has a 7.0 kg mass hanging
from one end and a 9.0 kg mass hanging from the other. This arrangement is called Atwood’s Machine. Find the
acceleration of the masses and the tension in the cord.

10. Compute the mass of the Earth, assuming to be sphere of radius 6370km.
11. What is the acceleration at a point 20,000 km above the earth’s surface?
12. A body weighs 700N on the surface of the earth. How much will it weigh at an altitude of 10,000m?

Work-Energy Theorem
13. Assume that an object is being pulled along the ground by a 75 N force directed 28° above the horizontal. How
much work does the force do in pulling the object in 5m?
14. If eating a burger enables a person to perform 60 KJ of work. How high should a 60 kg person can climb after
eating a burger?
15. An advertisement claims that a certain 1200 kg car can accelerate from rest to a speed of 25 m/s in a time of 8.0 s.
What average power in (a) Watts (b) horsepower (c) (ft-lb)/s must the motor produce to cause this acceleration?
Ignore friction losses.
16. A 20 kg object strikes the unstretched spring attached to a vertical wall having a spring constant of 30KN/m. Find
the maximum deflection of the spring when the velocity of the object before it strikes the spring is 80m/s.
17. A 1500 kg car is to accelerate from rest to a speed of 20 m/s in a time of 15 sec as it climbs a 15° hill. Assuming
uniform acceleration, what minimum horsepower is needed to accelerate the car in this way?
18. A 0.50 kg block slides across a tabletop with an initial velocity of 20 cm/s and comes to rest in a distance of
70cm. Find the average friction force that retarded its motion.
19. A projectile is shot upward from the earth with a speed of 20m/s. How high is it when its speed is 8 m/s? Ignore
air friction.
20. The constant forces F1= i +2j+ 3k N and F2= 4i-5j-2k N act together on a particle during a displacement from
position r2 = 7k cm to position r1= 20i + 15j cm. Determine the total work done on the particle.
Law of Conservation of Momentum
21. An 8.0 g bullet is fired horizontally into a 9.0 kg cube of wood, which is at rest and sticks in it. The cube is free to
move and has a speed of 40 cm/s after impact. Find the initial velocity of a bullet and type of collision.
22. A 16g mass is moving in the +x direction at 30cm/s while a 4g mass is moving in the –x direction at 50cm/s. They
collide head on and stick together. Find their velocity after the collision and type of collision.
23. The nucleus of an atom has a mass of 3.80 x 10-25 kg and is at rest. The nucleus is radioactive and suddenly ejects
a particle mass of mass 6.6 x 10-27 kg and speed 1.5 x 1027 m/s. Find the recoil speed of the nucleus that is left
behind.
24. A 15g bullet is fired horizontally into a 3 kg block of wood suspended by a long cord. The bullet sticks in the
block. Compute the speed of the bullet if the impact causes the block to swing 10cm above its initial level.
25. A ball is dropped from a height h onto a fixed horizontal plane. If the coefficient of restitution is e, calculate the
total distance travelled before the ball comes to rest.
