Materials for Student task Card (1-2 per group)

Participants Cooperative Cards (1 set per group)
Red, green, blue, yellow, orange, and purple colored pencils or markers
Large graph paper and/or chart paper for the group graph

Goal/s Mathematical Goals

● Make connections between graphs, tables, and equations by
identifying slope and y-intercept in each representation
● Recognize that two non-parallel lines have a point of intersection
and that point is a solution for the equations of both lines

Social Justice Goals

● Recognize that the current minimum wage does not allow an
individual to afford the fair market price of a moderate 2 bedroom
rental unit, assuming that housing should require about 30% of
income

Notes During small group work and/or during whole class discussion, make sure
to ask students what the slope (questions 1-2 get at this) and y-intercepts
(question 3 would help connect to this idea) represent in this context
What’s a Fair Housing Wage?
Today your group will figure out the hourly wage necessary for a family in Des Moines to
afford housing. You will look at real data about hourly wages (the amount of money you make
per hour) and the cost for renting each month. Your goal is to use mathematics to decide
whether or not you think six families in Des Moines are paid fair wages.

Your Task - As a team, do the following:

Figure out how many hours each family needs to work to pay rent for the type of
apartment you think is best for the family.

Guidelines:
● Draw a graph & write an equation for each family’s monthly earnings over time
● Use a different color pencil/marker for each family
● Use this data to about fair housing rental prices for monthly rent:

● Each member of the team will select a family - Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, or Orange.
DO NOT SHOW your card to your team. You may only communicate the information
on the card.

Use your team’s graph and work to answer the following questions:

1. Who needs to work the fewest hours each month to afford a 1 bedroom apartment?
How did you determine this answer?

2. Who needs to work the most hours each month to afford a 1 bedroom apartment? How
did you determine your answer?
3. The Purple line and the Orange line intersect at a point. What is the significance of this
point? Explain what this coordinate means in relation to the task about housing prices.

4. Financial advisors recommend that you only use 30% of your monthly income to pay for
rent. If you take 30% of each family’s income, will they be able to afford the houses
they need? If not, what kind of housing can the family afford with only 30% of their
income?

5. According to the Des Moines Register, a family in Des Moines needs to make $16.83
per hour to afford a moderate 2 bedroom home. Does this match what you found? If
not, what is the hourly wage necessary in Des Moines for a family to afford a 2
bedroom home?

On your own, complete the following:

● Based on the information you and your peers collected, does the cost of living seem
“fair” for the average family living in Des Moines? Write a letter to the local paper
describing your stance on the fairness of the housing market. Make sure to include data
to justify your stance.
