Chapter I

In tro d uc t i o n

Ra t io n al e

According to Bichard et al. (2004) the social infrastructures particularly public toilets

should be sustainable, healthy, and inclusive. Thus, public toilet should met the following

considerations in order to design a functional and useful structure.

1. The public toilet should be sustainable as it can be easily subjected for cleaning and

monitored for maintenance for it should within the perimeter of the plaza.

2. It should poses health and safety problems specifically for women, children, the

elderly, and the disabled. Public toilet need to be clean, secured and free from vandalism in order

to be used confidently by the public; if it is not well maintained it will be used less frequently or

avoided entirely.

3. It should be inclusive and accessible to the public. It becomes a tool for figuring out

just how a society functions—what its values are, how it separates from one another, and the

kinds of trade-offs that come to be made. Architectural design and urban planning issues of

public toilets should be done through interdisciplinary discussions about and observations of

gender, age, and ability.

O BJ ECT IVES

The main goal of this project proposal entitled “AN ECO- FRIENDLY PUBLIC

TOILET AT SAN MIGUEL PUBLIC PLAZA” is to design a public toilet which is

sustainable, healthy and accessible to the general public.

Specifically, this project proposal aims to;

 Design a modern and functionalist aesthetic public toilet that is unconventional that

would able to attract tourists and people of the community

 Provide opportunities to everyone and bring different groups of people together,

contributing to social integration and the desirability of a place

 Create a public toilet to boost the confidence of visitors, tourists and etc. to move around

the city and spend more time in the place

Data and Information Gathering

In order to proceed in the design process the following information should be gathered.

INFORMATIONS

I. SITE DATA

a) Local Climate

b) Prevailing Winds

c) Orientation (Solar)

d) Vegetation

e) Neighboring Structure

f) Site History

g) Liabilities and Opportunities

II. CLIENTS’ DATA

a) Cultural Beliefs

b) Preference

c) Personality Traits

III. BUILDING TYPOLOGY

a) Type of Structure

b) Historical Precedents
I. SITE DATA

a.) Local Climate

The type of climate that the Municipality of San Miguel experiences is tropical climate.

Whereas, it has only two seasons; the wet and dry season but during summer or dry season it
