1. INTRODUCTION
The present Technical Note focuses on the hydraulic dimensioning of
the Channel drainages.
In fact an articulated drainage system has been introduced all along the
structure in order to intercept and evacuate the possible rainfall water
on surface and any seepage discharge in depth.
In Chapter 2 a description of the components is exposed, illustrating
the adopted solutions and the release points.
The hydrological evaluation of the discharges to be evacuated is carried
out in Chapter 3 and is followed by the relative hydraulic calculations in
Chapter 4.

2. DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM

In the present Chapter a description of the Channel drainage system is
exposed.
It consists of a surface and an underground network.

2.1 Surface drainage

The rainfall water is intercepted by the lateral slopes and is considered
to flow on the lateral benches of the Channel.
The pertinence areas are represented for the left side by the slope
between the service road and the Channel and for the right side by the
slope between the upstream draining trench and the Channel (Fig.1).

Figure 1. Pertinence areas of the surface network

The lateral benches will be adequately covered with grass, in order to

work as ditches due to the longitudinal slope of 0.7‰ , the same of the
Channel.

2.2 Underground drainage

The underground drainage system of the Headrace Channel is
composed by two microslot pipes with staggered slots Ø 300 and Ø 400
mm located beside the reinforced concrete slab, respectively on the left
and on the right , as shown in the following Figure 2.
The longitudinal slope of the pipes is the same of the Channel (0.7‰).

Figure 2. Location of the drainage pipes

The staggered slots are disposed in the upper part of the pipes in order
to intercept the underground water and to allow the flowing of the water
in uniform flow conditions.
The drainage pipes are enveloped by an adequate draining material
(gravel) and by a geotextile whit a filter function, as schematically
exposed in the following Figure 3.

2.3 Drainages releases

Along the channel seven release points have been displaced, as
illustrated in the following Figure 4.

In every release point the water flowing in the left and right deep
drainage pipes and the water flowing on the lateral benches of the
Channel converge in an accessible manhole, see Figure 5.

Figure 5. Drainages release plan view

The final evacuation is operated by one Ø1200 mm pipe.
In particular the surface water is intercepted by a dedicated collecting
device and released in the downstream pipe for the final evacuation (see
Figure 6).

3. HYDROLOGY
In the present Chapter the evaluation of the discharges intercepted by
the drainage system of the Channel is developed.
The hydrologic basic data are exposed in the document "HPP2-DD-A-3-
00-R0_Hydrological Report".
For the calculation of the discharges the rational method has been
utilized.
The rational formula estimates the peak rate of runoff at a specific
location in a watershed as a function of the drainage area, runoff
coefficient, and mean rainfall intensity for a duration equal to the time
of concentration.
The rational formula is:
C ⋅i ⋅ A
Q=
3.6
where:
o Q is the peak discharge in m3/s;
o c is the rational method runoff coefficient, equal to 0.7;
o i is the rainfall intensity in mm/h, equal to 80 mm/h;
o A is the drainage area in km2.

In the present case the area A to be drained is constituted by the

distance between two release points and the width of the lateral slopes.
The section with the greater contribution is located between the release
points 1 and 2, pk 0+660 ÷ 1+460.
Considering the right side of the Channel, the assumed average lateral
slope width is of 15 m for a length of 800 m.
For the left side the lateral slope width is 7 m for a length of 800 m.
Taking into account the above mentioned data, the maximum
calculated discharge is 88 l/s for the left side and 190 l/s for the right
side.

4. HYDRAULIC CALCULATIONS
In the present Chapter the hydraulic calculations for the drainage
system of the Channel are exposed.

4.1 Surface drainage

As anticipated, the surface drainage is represented by the lateral
benches that work as ditches for the evacuation of the water.
The benches present a minimum width of about 1.40 m on the left and
right side.
The Chézy equation has been considered for the calculations:
2 1
Q = ks ⋅ A ⋅ R 3 ⋅ i 2
where:
o Q is the discharge, equal to 88 l/s for the left side and 190 l/s for
the right side;
o ks is the Strickler roughness coefficient of bench, considered 33.3
m1/3/s;
o R is the hydraulic radius;
o i is the longitudinal slope, considered 0.7‰.;
o A is the wet area.

Considering the exposed values, the discharges of 88 l/s and 190 l/s
flow on the lateral benches with a water height of 0.23 m (left side) and
0.35 m (right side).

As exposed in Figure 6, the water is intercepted by a dedicated

collecting device and released in the downstream pipes with diameters
Ø 300 mm (left side) and Ø 400 mm (right side) for the final evacuation.
The discharges of 88 l/s and 190 l/s flow in the collector pipes with a
filling percentage of about 70%.

4.2 Underground drainage

During the Channel excavations no evidence of significant deep
seepages has been registered.
Therefore for the dimensioning of the Channel underground drainage a
tentative percentage of 20% of the rainfall contribution, corresponding
to 17.4 l/s on the left side and 37.3 l/s on the right side, has been
considered.
As exposed in the Chapter 2, the underground drainage system of the
Headrace Channel is composed by two microslot pipes with staggered
slots Ø 300 and Ø 400 mm located beside the reinforced concrete slab
respectively on the left and on the right.
The longitudinal slope of the pipes is the same as the Channel and is
equal to 0.7‰.
Also in this case, the Chézy equation has been considered for the
calculations:
2 1
Q = ks ⋅ A ⋅ R 3 ⋅ i 2
where:
o Q is the discharge ;
o ks is the Strickler roughness coefficient of the pipe, considered 80
m1/3/s;
o R is the hydraulic radius ;
o i is the longitudinal slope, considered 0.7‰;
o A is the wet area.
The discharges related to the 70% of filling (under the staggered slots)
in uniform conditions result 22.3 l/s for the left side drainage pipe and
of 47.9 l/s for the right side.
These values widely satisfy the over exposed dimensioning criteria.
