Beowulf Extension Activities

ART

Choose 1 of the battles that Beowulf fought and create a comic strip showing what
happened. It should look like something from the Sunday Comics. Make sure you cover
the important elements/events within the battle. Add dialogue in bubbles. Make sure
your illustrations match the dialogue or event. You do not have to draw; you could use
clip art or cut pictures from magazines. Make sure you use color. Your Comic Strip
should be in final copy form.

Literature

Create a Character Booklet for either Beowulf or Grendel. It should be a portfolio of

items that show your knowledge of who this character is. It should include the following:
a written character description – both physical and internal qualities should be included; a
picture of some sort that represents how you view this character; a poem you feel
represents this character – written by you or someone else with a written explanation of
why you think it represents this character; song lyrics for a song you feel represents this
character, along with an explanation of why you chose this song; a letter written by the
character to someone else that would show his inner thoughts and feelings; a resume for
this character (see us for possible computer programs to help you). It should be a booklet
with separate pages for each element and a cover page with your name, hour, class and
date.

Social Studies

Create a set of maps for the story of Beowulf. You should have a map for the Scyldings
(Hrothgar’s group, the Danes) which includes the Herot and the swamp where Grendel
and his mother live. You should have a map for Geatland, showing where both the Geats
and the dragon live. You should also have a map that encompasses the entire area (think
about the map at the beginning of your activity packet). Altogether, you need at least 3
maps. You can hand draw them or look for some help from the computer. All maps
should be colorful and labeled correctly with all relevant and significant information.
