Bombers Defeat Clippers…
On Friday, January 11th, the Senior Bombers trav-
elled to Cartwright to take on the Clippers. The first pe-
riod saw Minnedosa earn two goals – the first shot by
Kelly Stinson assisted by Matt Saler and Wes Lewis with
the second shot by Ryan Heino assisted by Wes Lewis and
Matt Saler. The Clippers also got a goal in the first period.
Neither team scored during the second period with the
Bombers getting the final and winning goal in the third. It
was scored by Clay Bergeson assisted by Brad Lewis and
Shane Jury.
On Main Street…
Some changes are coming to Main Street in the next
little while. The restaurant in Minnedosa Inn is sched-
uled to re-open next month much to the excitement of
the morning coffee crowd and former customers. It will
be known as Drucilla’s Diner and operated by Tracy Reid
Alexander. The Lover’s Pizza location, between SUBWAY
and Kim’s Quality Foods, which has sat empty for quite
some time will also re-open, this time as Boho Soul Mar-
ket offering health and wellness products and fermented
food items and will be operated by Magen Swift. It is al-
ways exciting to welcome new businesses to the commu-
nity and we wish both great success!
Chamber looks at hiring…
At last week’s Chamber of Commerce meeting, a mo-
tion was passed to establish a sub-committee to explore
further the possibility of hiring a dedicated Chamber staff
person. This question was put forth to the Chamber’s 125
members in an online survey late last year. While only 25
online surveys were completed and returned, 18 of those
were in favour of hiring a staff person.

Fields August 2nd to 4th. The first artists announcement
for this year’s festival is scheduled in early February.

What Will the Year Bring?

T hree weeks into a new year has me wonder-
ing what 2019 will have in store for Minnedosa.
What news stories and happenings will the oldest
weekly newspaper in the Canadian West get to share
with our faithful readers over the next 12 months?
A couple stories I am personally looking for-
ward to recording in our pages are the possibilities of
much-needed and long-overdue work to Main Street
and the proposed Minnedosa Regional Events Cen-
tre – new arena project. Some time ago, we reported
provincial funding had been approved to work on
a cost-sharing agreement to repave Minnedosa’s
bumpy, old, worn-out Main Street. Hopefully, we
will see this project move forward this year. There
have also been strong indications that some gov-
ernment funding should be announced for the new
arena and if and when this announcement is made,
the many years of sweat, tears and headaches of the
volunteer planning committee can hopefully come
to fruition with a ground-breaking ceremony to sig-
nal the start of construction on the new multi-use,
year-round recreation facility.
There is also the proposed new maintenance
shop for the Rolling River School Division. Might
there be some further developments with this proj-
ect in 2019? Whenever that project is completed and
the new arena completed, we are then left with the
questions of what will become of the old Armoury
building where the school divisions maintenance
shop currently is housed and what will become of
the old arena?
This year should see the completion of a couple
multi-unit housing complexes currently under con-
struction. Those residents who are planning to call
these new units home will have an exciting move
ahead of them. They may also have a former home to
put on the real estate market which, when sold, will
hopefully welcome some new residents to our com-

munity. While on the topic of housing, we cannot
forget about all that land the Town purchased some
years back for a new residential subdivision south of
9th Avenue S.W. Will 2019 be the year that a devel-
oper will be found to move this exciting opportunity
forward, enlarging Minnedosa in not only size but its
tax base?
Tourism remains a big draw for our community
year-round. A brand-new community branding is
expected to be revealed shortly and some new, ex-
citing ideas related to tourism are being discussed
around various committee tables. We will also see
the return of a number of annual, popular festivals
and attractions and wish them all growth this year.
Our lake remains a critical topic of importance.
What developments might we see in the months
ahead to address concerns such as lake levels, silt
build-up and weed problems? Hopefully, there are
some good news stories and positive steps taken to
secure the future health of our main tourist attrac-
tion! Also, could the Minnedosa Beach sign finally
return to the spillway? It is sure missed by many, in-
cluding yours truly.
On the business front, we know of at least two
new businesses scheduled to open in Minnedosa
soon, what others might come forward this year?
Might a few of the vacant commercial buildings be
filled? A number of our local businesses are cur-
rently listed for sale – will they see new ownership
in 2019? On the other hand, sadly, we may also ex-
perience the closure of some local businesses due to
retirements, lack of customer support or other un-
foreseen circumstances.
There are so many possibilities for the days,
weeks and months ahead it’s hard to predict what
will take place in Minnedosa’s 136th year. However,
as things happen, both good and bad, we will be
here to record those happenings in the pages of the
local community newspaper, Ye Olde Tribune!

1939 – There were 85 children born in Minnedosa in
1938. There were also 27 deaths and 27 marriages.
1949 – The Jaycees sponsored a variety show to raise
money for the lake pier.
1959 – Craig Stewart has taken over ownership of Wil-
ton Motors. Wm. Wilton has transferred his interests to
Brandon. The local business will now be known as Stew-
art Motors.
1969 – Mrs. Hazel Vellam, a petite dynamic housewife
and mother of two starts the year as Minnedosa’s first
lady town councillor.
1979 – Keith Timmons and Gary Carter have sold
Minnedosa Sights and Sounds, to John and Marlene Fehr
of Neepawa. The business is expected to continue featur-
ing a full line of Radio Shack products, tapes and records.
1999 – The Chamber of Commerce executive for this
year includes John Mendrikis as President, Barb Cook
as Vice President and Callie Mashtoler as Secretary-Trea-
surer. The Chamber currently has 86 business members.

Hall.
The guest speaker for
the evening was Dale Tim-
merman. Timmerman

Section of Manitoba Sus-
tainable Development.
This section administers
and manages the Conser-
vation Districts Program
as defined by The Conser-
vation Districts Act, and
coordinates and supports
Integrated Watershed
Management Planning as
outlined in The Water Pro-
tection Act (2006).

Roy Greer, who was instru-

over the years, Roy was
awarded the CD Builder
Award. Recipients of this
award have provided out-
standing leadership and
contribution, promotion
and achievement within a
specific conservation dis-
trict.
Roy’s passion for the
district continued even
after his passing, through
memorial donations to the
district.

Amongst the many pro-
grams, the Kerr Lake proj-
ect was begun in the last
year.
Paiten said that “Proj-
ect implementation for
water quality monitoring
at Kerr Lake commenced
this year with 10 sampling
days from April to October.
Samples were collected
from the lake itself and
from the inflows to the lake
as well as the outflows”.
Harapiak went on to say “A
complete analysis will be
conducted once all the re-
sults are received.”
The CD sealed 15 large
and small diametre aban-
doned wells, and the dis-
trict continues to rent out
the solar offsite watering
system to livestock pro-
ducers. After 18 seasons of
operation the zero till drill
has been retired, and the
program will be unavail-
able until further notice.
Ms. Harapiak went on
to report that 2800 trees
had been planted in 11
shelterbelts protected with
18,000 feet of mulch. An
additional 2350 trees were
purchased by 20 landown-
ers to plant on their own.
After the program
report, Colleen and Ray
Frey (board chair) made
presentations of Service
Awards to Gary Stewart
(five years) of Oakview,
Ewan Common and Kaye
Wolstenholme both of
Oakview who both re-
ceived 10-year pins.
The meeting wrapped
up after sub-district and
board elections, and com-
mittee members selected.

Municipality of Harrison Park

2019 Grant Applications
The Council of the Municipality of Harrison Park wishes to advise
that grant applications are now being accepted from non-profit
organizations who wish to be considered for grant funding in the 2019
fiscal year. Grants will not be provided to religious organizations.
All grant requests for amounts over $1,000 must be accompanied by
current financial statements.
Applications must be completed and submitted to the Municipal Office by
4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2019. Organizations may be requested to
provide a current financial statement.
Applications will be reviewed by the Council of the Municipality of Harrison

2019 Financial Plan.

Travelling Art Gallery Visits Library

her favorite subject to work
with using watercolour
and pencil. Margo told
the Art Council she is still

ary 19th. The Travelling
Gallery will visit 19 com-
munities in Southwestern
Manitoba over the next
year. Following its stint in
Minnedosa, the Gallery
Neepawa, then on to Car-
berry, Killlarney, Boissev-
ain and finally coming to
a close in May with the last
stop being in Brandon.
The Arts West Council
is an organization of vol-
unteers who are interested
in the development of the
visual arts in the Westman
Region. Membership is
made up of individual art-
ists from across the region.
Two local residents
who were chosen by the
jurors to have their art
featured in the show.
Minnedosa resident,
Stephanie Bretecher,
was selected with a piece
called, “Everything the
Light Touches”. Stephanie
uses acrylic, pencil and
charcoal to specialize in
equine and wildlife art. The
wolf is one of her favourite
working on perfecting her
watercolour. Congratula-
tions to these ladies on
their amazing works of art!

visited the Library to view
the art on display, you still
have one last opportunity

New Doctor Welcomed at Primary Care Centre

Nolan grew up in Jus-
tice on the family farm,
approximately 35 kilome-
tres south of Minnedosa
and attended school in
Forrest. Graduating from
high school in 2002, No-
lan spent four years at
Brandon University re-
ceiving his honors degree
in chemistry with a minor
in biology. From there, he
was accepted into the Uni-
versity of Manitoba Medi-
cal School. At this time,
Nolan signed a return of
service agreement with the
Town of Deloraine where
he guaranteed he would
work for four years and in
return was assisted with
the University of Manito-
ba in 2010, Nolan and his
partner, Adriana, headed
out to the Rural Alberta
South Program, which is
part of the University of
Calgary, to complete his
residency. After two years
of working in various ar-
eas of southern Alberta
including; Medicine Hat,
Crowsnest Pass, Olds and
Calgary, Nolan returned to
Brandon in 2012 complet-
ing his last month of resi-
dency.
In July 2012, Nolan of-
ficially started his practice
in Deloraine. Working pri-
marily in the primary care
clinic, emergency, long-
term care and chemother-
apy unit, Nolan spent six
years serving the south-
west residents, often times
being the lone doctor of
