1. What are the reasons for planning?


1.1 for Personal Planning
1.2 for Professional Planning

 Progress - If you are planning to succeed, the plan will include your progress as
well as the best pathway to achieve the goal.
 Decision Making - Whenever you plan, you know what you want to achieve in a
given time frame. At the same time, you are clear what the future holds for you and
what is the goal.
 Achieving Desired Results - Planning is important, because through progress,
an integrated approach, flexibility, and all the other points mentioned above,
planning ultimately helps you reach a desired, and viable objective.

2. Why is Planning important for Management?

 It increases efficiency - planning makes optimum utilization of all available


resources. It helps to reduce wastage of valuable resources and avoids their
duplication.
 Reduces risks - there are many risks involved in any organization or institutions
wherein planning helps to forecast these kinds of Risk. It also helps to take the
necessary precautions to avoid these risks and prepare for future uncertainties in
advance.
 Facilitates proper coordination - Often, the plans of all departments of an
organization/Institutions are well coordinated with each other.
 Keeps good control - With control, the actual performance of an employee is
compared with the plans, and deviations (if any) are found out and corrected. It is
impossible to achieve such a control without right planning. Therefore, planning
becomes necessary to keep a good control.
 Helps to achieve objectives - Every organization has certain objectives or targets.
It keeps working hard to fulfill these goals. Planning helps an organization to
achieve these aims, but with some ease and promptness.
 Motivates personnel - A good plan provides various financial and non-financial
incentives to both managers and employees. These incentives motivate them to
work hard and achieve the objectives of the organization.
 Helps in decision-making - A manager makes many different plans. Then the
manager selects or chooses the best of all available strategies. Making a selection
or choosing something means to take a decision. So, decision-making is facilitated
by planning.

3. What is Planning as a function of Management?


Planning is the process of setting performance objectives and determining what
should be done to accomplish them. A plan is a set of intended actions for
accomplishing important objectives. Planning sets the stage for the other
management functions like organizing, leading, and controlling. And Good planning
improves performance by better focus and flexibility, coordination, control and time
management.
There are steps undertaken in the Planning Process:
The steps in the planning process are 1. define your objectives, 2. determine
where you stand vis-à-vis objectives, 3. develop your premises regarding future
conditions, 4. identify and choose among alternative ways of accomplishing objectives,
and 5. implement action plans and evaluate results.
