“Accepting of Autism” by Scott Lentine (MB)

Scott Lentine is reflecting on how people treat him differently

because of his autism. He uses symbolism, “others keeps me
feeling blue” (II, III) to explain that sometimes critics of his make him
sad. This relates the color blue to depression and negativity.
Lentine also uses repetition “”I want to make new friends and
create a new start
I like to develop new relationships with an open heart” (IV,
I-II). This helps him keep his main points in his readers’ minds.
Finally, Lentine ends his poem with optimism, “So people can
understand a true autistic man” (IV, IV). Even though he doesn’t
fit in, Scott Lentine uses a positive outlook for his tone in his poem.

“Major and Minor” by Nescenda Blake (MB)
Nescenda Blake explains how she is different from others because of her
autism. She uses rhetorical questions, “Self-involved? Maybe.
Self-conscious? Definitely.” (XVIII). This helps her address her audience in
a more direct way. Blake also, “”You hear melodious music.” (VI) uses
imagery to paint a picture of her situation for her readers. Finally, Nescenda,
uses repetition “Everything is major.” (XXVII) by repeating major and minor to
drive her point home. Blake’s tone is somewhat pessimistic, but truthful and
serious.

“Homeless” by Kay Kay
(Slide- SB)
Kay is explaining to us how tough life is and how
extremely hard it is to live being homeless. First,
Kay says, “I’m tired, hungry, and very depressed.”
She is using first person point of view and
describing how people feel when they are
homeless (li. 13). Next, she says, “It’s hard to
crack a smile and my heart is so full of sorrow.”
She is using figurative language here and
metaphors. She does this to deepen the meaning
and help the reader understand (li. 5-6). Lastly,
Kay says, “I want to see your gleaming face.”
Here she is using metaphors and descriptive
language so the readers are able to create a
picture in their heads (li. 20). All in all, Kay uses
figurative language but it is used to help the
readers understand more how homelessness
affects people.
“The Homeless” by
Patricia Grantham (Slide-
SB)
Grantham talks about the everyday struggle of the
homeless and what they have to go through. First,
she says, “Pushing a cart so ladened with all of their
earthy goods.” Here she is using very descriptive
words and metaphors to help us understand that the
homeless have all of their belongings in a single cart
(li. 3). Next, she says, “God watched over them the
same as He does for the birds.” This is a simile
saying that God is still watching over the homeless as
he watches the birds everyday, the homeless are not
forgotten (li.8). Lastly, she says, “Lets not look on the
outside but on the inside that is full of grace.” This is
showing that people look at homeless people and
judge but you can misunderstand by just looking at
someone (li. 16). All in all, the homeless struggle and
Grantham put it in words to help us understand.
“Make It Green” by Avani Desai (AP)
Avani Desai showed her concern about the Mother Earth’s
situation by making a short poem that specifically saying that we
all should unite. Avani wrote the quote “With Global Warming,
it's in danger, Let's save it by becoming a strong ranger…” to
show that being strong together will save our Earth (li. 5-6). Next,
Avani says “Trees are precious, preserve them, Water is a
treasure, reserve it…” to describe that every plant is important to
us and is precious that people should know how to replace a tree if
they cut one (li. 11-12). Finally, Avani added symbolism in her
poem “Grow more trees, make Mother Earth green...” for Earth to
come back to being green, means clean and healthy, everyone
should be cautious to what is happening to the environment (li.
13). Her set of tone is positive because she believes unity is the
answer to solve the calamity.
“God Made Nature” by chandra thiagarajan (AP)
In this poem, Chandra Thiagarajan showed that we are created to take care
of nature but people did not take a good care of it and it’s showing that we
are not necessary for nature. Chandra wrote, “Nature can survive without
man.Man cannot survive without nature.” to describe that nature does not
even need us because we do not even take care of them that they can
survive on their own without our help (li. 2-3). Avani added, “He
contaminates the Earth. He spoils the Water. He pollutes the Air and
Space. He has made a hole in the ozone layer” to describe how people
slowly destroying the Earth and people only cause problems to earth such
as the given problems in the poem (li. 5-8). Finally, Chandra added “Let
him beware and not meddle with nature. Nature can survive without man.
Man cannot survive without nature!” to tell that everyone should be aware
to what was happening to the environment because if we let our own
hands destroy the Earth it will just show that mankind took advantage to
Nature (li. 10-12). The tone of the poem was angry because the author
want people to take care of the environment and be aware that we are just
damaging the Earth and polluting it. This poem used Free Verse and does
not contain many literary device.
¨Discrimination¨ by David Taylor (EB)
In this poem, David Taylor describes how racism and
discrimination makes the worst come out of people and
shows who they truly are. “Fighting wars because of
God?” (Line 11)Racism and discrimination cause so
many problems including wars just because people have
different beliefs and some can't accept the fact that
people do. “But we have legislation to banish
discrimination. 'Equal opportunity' is the current phrase;
our incantation.” (Line 13-16) Yet we have rules and
laws set forth to make it go away and create this idea of
equality for all even though that is not happening and
discrimination is still in people's everyday lives. The
rules and laws need to be even more enforced so that
people can really begin to see how discrimination and
racism are terrible things. “Discrimination would be good
if it were used for what it does; revealing what unites
ALL of us.” (Line 27-29) Deep inside we are all united
because in one way or another we are all the same and
unified as one.
¨Discrimination¨ by Adelaide Rhead (EB)
In this poem, Adelaide Rhead explains his beliefs on
discrimination. “Why do you think you're better if your
culture is not the same? Yes, maybe you seem different
but deep inside all are the same.” (Line 1-4) He
describes how people think they are better than others
because of their beliefs even though in some way or
another we are all so similar. People think they are
better if they have a certain skin color, or if they have a
certain sexuality, religion, etc, but really we are very
similar. If one is Christian and one is Jew, all come from
God, we are the same.” (Line 11-12)In this person's
point of view we are all the same because we all come
should get to know people before we judge them because then we from God.
can get to We
see who they truly are and see what it is like
to be in their shoes. “When you give them a chance for you to like them, then they can give you that too If one learns to
understand and respect all point of view, then peace on Earth must surely come. It's up to you. And you. And you….”
(Line 17-20) If we all start to respect one another and just accept people for who they are, then there is a chance that life
would be more peaceful and their wouldn't be as much hatred in the world, but it's up to us and we have to be the ones to
start accepting others for who they are, it won't just happen on it's own.
“People” By: Gorillaz (JB)

This song shows how the many types of

people think that what they stand for is the
right way and the only way. They stick to
their beliefs no matter how far fetched they
might seem. They won’t accept those who
question and think otherwise. They push
away the idea of new possibilities. Only
time can show these types of people the
truth.
“Everyday People” By Sly & the Family Stone
(JB)
This song represents inequality caused by
stereotypes. The rich won’t help the poor,
the fat are ridiculed for trying to become
skinny, people with racial differences
castaway each other, and so on. This
treatment of others assumably won’t stop,
until they realize how much pain is caused
by these acts. Somethings can be taken
personal to countless people.
