ENGINEERING MECHANICS II ASSIGNMENT #8

Design of Members Under Direct Stresses

Designing for Shear Stress

#1 A circular punch is used to punch a 25.0 mm circular diameter hole in a sheet of SAE 1020 hot rolled steel
having a thickness of 6.5 mm. Compute the force required to punch out the slug.

#4-21 Figure P4-21 shows an anvil for an impact hammer held in a fixture by a circular pin. If the force is to be
500 lb, specify a suitable diameter for the steel pin as it is to be made from AISI 1040 WQT 900.
Ans: Dmin = 0.206 in

#4-26 Compute the force required to punch out a slug having the shape shown in Figure P4-26 from a sheet of
SAE 1040 cold drawn steel having a thickness of 1.6mm.

#4 A section of pipe is supported by a saddlelike structure, which, in turn, is supported by two 0.75 inch
diameter pins similar to the one as illustrated in P4-31. If the load is 42000 lbs, and is equally carried by
the pins, determine the factor of safety N of the pins if the left pin accidently used SAE 1080 annealed steel,
while the right pin used SAE 1080 OQT 700 steel as was called for in the original plans. What will be the
result?

Designing for Bearing Stress

#5 In the diagram below, the post is AISI 4140 OQT 1300 steel, 160mm x 160mm, the plate is 1040 hot rolled
steel, 240mm x 240mm, the top of the 2000psi rated concrete footing is 450mm x 450mm and the bottom
of the footing is 800mm x 800mm. The soil is soft rock. Determine the bearing stresses at each section,
and if the design is safe, when the bearing load F is 850 KN.
(2)

#6 The round hanger rod, as shown below, is supported by a floor plank. If the static load in the rod is 12000
lbs, determine:
a) if the washer is acceptable in bearing if it is SAE 1020 annealed steel, and,
b) if the No. 1 Douglas fir floor plank below it is acceptable in bearing.
c) if the A36 bolt is acceptable in tension.
Assume the hex head of the bolt has s=1.5in sides (thus h = (√3)s)
(3)

#7 One end of a structural steel beam is supported on a bearing plate having a radius of 200mm. If the beam
and bearing plate are both made from A36 structural steel, what is the maximum allowable load that could
be applied to the beam according to the AISC codes?
