 Definition of personal computer

• A personal computer is a general-purpose, cost-effective computer that is designed to be

used by a single end-user. Every PC is dependent on microprocessor technology, which
allows PC makers to set the entire Central Processing Unit (CPU) on a single chip.
• Businesses make use of PCs to perform tasks like accounting, desktop publishing and word
processing as well as to run database and spreadsheets. At home, PCs are mainly used for
multimedia entertainment, playing PC games, accessing the Internet, etc. Even though PCs
are intended to use as single-user systems, it is normal to connect them together to create a
network, such as a Local Area Network (LAN).

• Personal computer have the unique strength available in many software. In fact, the user is
friendliness in this software package.

Component of personal computer

➢ Motherboard
▪ The core of other hardware such as CPU, VGA and others that will be installed on
the motherboard.

➢ Mouse
▪ Mouse is a hardware that is useful for doing an activities on a computer quickly.
➢ Monitor
▪ The monitor is a screen that is useful for displaying an image or display on a computer

➢ Keyboard
▪ The keyboard is a computer hardware that is useful for writing text on a computer.

➢ Central Processing Unit (CPU)

▪ The main unit inside the computer is the CPU. This unit is responsible for all event inside
the computer. It control all internal and external devices, perform “ Arithmetic and

• Function of a PC has a microprocessor for processing data, a keyboard for entering data, a
monitor for displaying data and a storage device for storing data. PC performs many
function such as: Accepting data – Accept Data input from the user through various input
device like the keyboard, mouse, scanner, digital camera and microphone.
 Advantage of personal computer

• Speed of work. More work can be done at a faster rate.

• Communicate globally quickly.
• Accuracy. Programs can make sure work is more accurate then if done manually.
• Connection to internet. Ability to research, ask questions
• Date stored. Data can be saved and manipulated and retrieved in vast amounts and at a very
rate rate.
• Natural resources saved. By using computers it vastly reduces our use of paper.
• Reduces work load. Information can be accessed by more then one person with the need for
work to be duplicated.
