Impulse and Momentum Worksheet #1

Honors Physics / IB Physics Year 1 Spring 2013

Do all of your work on a fresh sheet of paper outside of your spiral. Show each step of the process! Don't forget to include units and to consider significant
figures. Note: Any vector quantity given as an answer must have a magnitude and a direction.
1. A car that weighs 1790.0 N is heading eastward at 25.0 m/sec.
a) What is the mass of the car? b) What is the momentum of the car?
2. A force of 6.0 N towards the east acts on a 3.0 kg body (initially at rest) for 10.0 seconds.
a) What is the impulse exerted on the body? b) What is the change in momentum of the body? c) What is the final velocity of the body?
3. What is the momentum of a 17.0 gram sparrow flying with a speed of 14.0 m/sec towards the north?
4. A mosquito is heading toward the city with a speed of 0.00012 m/sec in the great movie thriller "The Bug That Bit Bombay". If the total momentum of the
insect is 250,000 kg m/sec, what is the mass of this flying terror?
5. A freight car of mass 250,000 kg was traveling towards the west at 2.0 m/sec when it collided with a similar freight car which was at rest. Upon impact, the two
cars locked together and headed towards the west.
a) What was the initial momentum of the1st car? b) What was the initial momentum of the 2nd car?
c) What was psystem total immediately before impact? d) What was psystem total immediately after impact? e) What was the final velocity of the train?
6. A plastic ball (m = 200.0 gram) is moving at a speed of 30.0 cm/sec towards the south. This plastic ball overtakes and then collides with a wooden ball (m =
100.0 gram) which is also moving towards the south at a speed of 10.0 cm/sec. After the collision, the velocity of the wooden ball is 26.0 cm/sec towards the
south. What is the final velocity of the plastic ball?
7. A 1000.0 kg cannon fires a 10.0 kg cannonball. When the cannon is fired, the cannonball goes forward at 935 m/sec.
a) What is psystem total just before the explosion? b) What is psystem total just after the explosion? c) What is the final velocity of the cannon?
8. A 0.0600 kg tennis ball (initially at rest) is hit with a tennis racket. The time of contact between the two is 0.025 sec. If the ball leaves the racket with a speed
of 65.0 m/sec, what was the force of the racket on the ball?
9. A bullet with a 50.0 gram mass strikes a stationary wooden block (m = 0.75 kg) and becomes embedded in the block. The block with the bullet in it then flies
off at 10.0 m/sec in the same direction as the bullet was initially moving. What was the initial speed of the bullet?
10. A 555-kg car has a head-on collision with a truck. Initially, the truck was moving west at 15.00 m/sec and the car was moving east at 22.0 m/sec. If the two
vehicles were at rest immediately after the collision, what was the mass of the truck?
11. A student (who is late for Physics class) bumps into the principal in the hallway. The student (who has a mass of 58 kg) was moving at 5.0 m/sec towards the
science area before the collision and at 1.33 m/sec away from the science area after the collision. If the principal has a mass of 75 kg and was initially at rest,
what was his final velocity?
