STONG SOPHOMORE CLASS TO LEAD STORM

After not winning the NEAC Championship for the first time in five years last sea-
son, Keuka’s strong sophomore class will look to get the Storm back atop the NEAC
in 2008-09.

Seven second-year players return to help Keuka improve on its 14-10 overall record
and 13-3 NEAC mark. Keuka was ousted in overtime in the semifinals of last season’s
NEAC Tournament after finishing second in the regular season.

Coach Dave Sweet will rely on his surplus of talented guards to help replace the loss
of high-scoring forwards Pam Gardner and Abby Brewer. Leading the returnees is
sophomore point guard Courtney Lincoln, who dished off 74 assists while also finish-
ing third on the team in scoring at 6.9 points a game. The 5-6 guard also grabbed 71
boards, collected 46 steals, and shot 40 percent from the floor, including 42 percent
from behind the arc (11-for-26).

Also returning to the backcourt will be junior Melissa Thurston and sophomore
Nicki Zahn. The duo combined to start 24 games while finishing fifth and sixth in
scoring, respectively. Thurston netted 5.9 points a game while leading the Storm with
49 steals. Zahn averaged 5.4 points to go with 60 rebounds.

Fellow sophomore guards Brittany Schrock and Jessica Fink return after gaining
valuable experience last season. Schrock led the Storm in 3-point shooting with 23
while scoring 4.2 points a game. Fink came on strong in the second half and was sec-
ond on the team in 3-pointers with 12.

In the frontcourt will be senior Angela Viggiani

and sophomores Heather Fish, Nadia
Madmoune, and Mindy Buck. Viggiani pulled
down 69 rebounds (3 a game). Fish averaged 2.4
boards and 3 points a contest. Madmoune pulled
down rebounds in bunches with 40 (3.1 a game)
in just 13 contests. Buck dished off 10 assists
while scoring 13 points.

New to the team this year will be guards Elena

Augustus, Alecia Steeves, Morgan Engelbert,
and Deanna Nortier. Helping out in the front-
court will be Courtney Manhard and Joycelynn
Crapp.

Coaching Profiles
Head Coach Dave Sweet
Dave Sweet begins his ninth season as the head coach of the women’s basketball team and
has an overall record of 116-77.

Last season Sweet guided the Storm to a 14-10 overall record (13-3 NEAC) while finishing in
Dave Sweet second place in the conference.

In 2006-07, Sweet led Keuka to an 18-8 overall mark while winning a fourth straight North
Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament championship. Sweet, named NEAC Coach
of the Year, also led the Storm to its first-ever NCAA Tournament.

He has held the director of athletics position since joining the Keuka staff in 1984 and
coached the men’s basketball squad from 1985-2000, compiling a 203-168 record. Prior to the
advent of the 2000-01 academic year, he was named women’s hoop coach and volleyball
coach. Sweet held the women’s volleyball head coach position from 2000 to 2005, leading the
Storm to a 100-69 mark.

Sweet, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Cleary College (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and a mas-
ter’s degree from Eastern Michigan, was a decorated high school athlete. A letterwinner in
nine sports, he was an all-league football, basketball and track performer and was team
MVP in all three sports his senior year. He was also named to the all-state football squad.
Sweet started his coaching career in the Michigan high schools ranks, leading both Monroe
Jefferson High School and Napoleon High School. He later served as an assistant basketball
coach at Eastern Michigan University.

Assistant Coach Katie Marcella

Katie Marcella begins her first season as an assistant women’s basketball coach here at
Keuka.

She was a four-year starter and two-time captain for Brockport while being named to the
All-SUNYAC second team as a junior and first team as senior. She amassed 987 points and
would have reached the 1,000 point milestone if not for a torn ACL. She finished her career
third all-time in steals and 3-pointers, sixth all-time in rebounding, and seventh in 3-point
percentage. Marcella was also named to the JPMorgan Chase All-Tournament first team
her senior year.

She was named her school’s Female Athlete of the Year. Marcella, who earned a degree in
Katie Marcella
physical education from SUNY Brockport in 2007, is pursuing a master’s degree in athletic
administration from Brockport.

Assistant Coach Ken Owen

Ken Owen begins his third season as an assistant coach on the women’s basketball team.
Owen serves as assistant coach for both men’s and women’s tennis at Keuka. In the fall of
2007, he helped guide the women’s team to the NEAC regular season championship, the
young program’s first.

Owen was head coach of Keuka’s softball team from 2004-05 and helped recruit some of the
players that led to the program’s back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007 and
2008. He holds an associate’s degree in accounting from Alfred State College and a bache-
Ken Owen lor’s degree in accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
