Hotel Paris: The New Training Program
Question 1: Based on what you read in this chapter, what do you suggest Lisa and her team
do first with respect to training? Why?
Answer:
Regarding the training, Lisa and her team should do the ‘Training Need Analysis’ at first.
The first step of any training is ‘Training Need Analysis’. Through this analysis, they can
identify the specific job performance skills needed, assess the prospective trainee’s skills and
develop specific, measurable knowledge and performance based on any deficiencies.
Without ‘Training Need Analysis’, no training should be allowed. That’s why; this should be
the first step of Lisa and her team.
Question 2: Have Lisa and the CFO sufficiently investigated whether training is really called
for? Why? What would you suggest?
Answer:
Lisa and CFO have understood that, their company has been providing less training and
spending less for training of the employees than other companies. But, they haven’t fully
done the analysis whether the training is really required.
Because, they don’t have sufficient information about the new employees’ or current
employees’ training need, specific job performance skills need, prospective trainee’s skills
etc.
Firstly, Lisa and her team should execute the ‘Task analysis’ to identify the kind of training
need for new employees.
Secondly, they should perform more complex one ‘Performance analysis ’ for verifying that
there is a performance deficiency of current employees and determining if the employer
should correct such deficiency through training. That means, whether the problem is ‘Can’t
do/ Won’t do’.
Question 3: Based on what you read in this chapter, and what you may access via the Web,
develop a detailed training program for one of these hotel positions: security guard,
housekeeper, or door person.
Answer:
1. Develop the objectives of the training: To train the new security guard to develop
them within required time.
2. Preparing detailed job description of the security guard: A detailed job
description is the heart of any training program. Daily and periodic tasks of a security
guard’s job should be included here. For example:
- Performs security patrols
- Protects property from theft, embezzlement, sabotage, fire and accidents
- Investigates and writes reports on accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety
and fire hazards and other security related situations
3. Developing an abbreviated task analysis record form: A task analysis record form
needs to be developed for a security guard which will generally contains four
columns:
- First Column: list tasks means what is to be performed
- Second Column: list performance standards mean quality, quantity, accuracy etc.
- Third Column: list trainable skills means the things employee must know or to do to
perform the task
- Fourth Column: list aptitudes
4. Preparing a job instruction sheet: A job instruction sheet will include each step of a
security guard needs to perform as well as key points and time duration for each step.
For an effective training program of a security guard, the above listed materials are minimal
required.
