220kV SUBSTATION SHORNUR OPERATING MANUAL

8. HISTORY OF SUBSTATION
Shornur substation was commissioned as 66KV substation in 1969 and
subsequently upgraded to 110KV in 1971 as per records available with us. The
substation compound is spread over 15.72 Acres of land in Eruppayil desom of
shornur-1 village. The area comes under Shornur municipality in Palakkad
district. Situated on north side of Palakkad- ponnani state highway nearly half
kilometer from unlawfully towards Palakkad. The land where Electrical
division, TMR division and electrical section are situated as under the custody
of 220KV substation sub division Shornur. The layout of total area is exhibited
in control room.

This substation was upgraded to 220KV in 2003 with two 220KV feeders
from 400KV substation Madakkathara and 220KV substation Areacode (both
feeder can use for import/ export), 2 nos. 100MVA 3phase 220/110KV
transformers normally connected in parallel provides 110KV supply to 110KV
'A' bus and 'B' bus. Normally both A and B bus are in coupled condition.
Two direct 110KV feeders from 400KV substation Madakkathara and
220KV substation Malaparamb can either used for import or export. All 110KV
feeders except 1SHTR can fed from either A or B bus. 1SHTR (Traction) feeder

one section of 220KV bus and 220KV SHAR feeder and 100MVA#2
transformer are on other section of 220KV bus. Referring single line diagram, it
can be seen that there are provision for the following feeding arrangements.
I) Output of both 100MVA transformers can be fed to either A or B bus
on 110KV side.
II) and both buses are of double MOOSE. The upper cross buses of
feeders are of hard drawn COPPER. On 110KV A bus an additional
Sectionaliser is provided to minimize interruption to 110KV SHTR
feeder which can only be fed from A bus. 110KV bus coupler bay is
constructed to facilitate coupling of both A & B buses with minimum
interruption time. The operating instructions given here are general
guide lines and feeding arrangements should be confirmed before each
major operation and prior concurrence of L D Kalamassery be
obtained. Also intimation should be given to station engineer
(Assistant Executive Engineer) about major operations.
9.2 DC SYSTEM
The DC system of 220KV substation Shornur consists of 2 separate sets

5. Battery chargers.
6. Air compressors.
7. Communication section loads.
8. Water pumps.
9. TR room loads.
9.5 110KV CAPACITOR BANK
We have a 25MVAR ABB make capacitor bank which has commissioned in
1995 as a part of CIDA project. Recently the circuit breaker has been replaced and
the bank is in good working condition. This bank is normally switched on to A or B
bus by changing their corresponding A or B bus isolators. The capacitor bank in
normal condition can be switched on when the bus voltage is in between 97% to
103%, with concurrence of sub LDC Trivandrum. An increase of 2KV is attained
when the capacitor bank is switched on. The bank is provided with under/ over
voltage , over current, earth fault, neutral shift

protections. It should be noted that when the capacitor bank is switched off,
then it can be reclosed only after a set time delay of 7 minutes and hence trials
should not be made before this 7 minutes as it may lead to mal operations and
confusions.
9.6 UNDER FREQUENCY RELAYS
Under frequency relay has been provided in 1SHKO,1SHEP,1SHKP and
1SHPP feeders. These relays are set to operate when the frequency goes below
48.8Hz. If this relay operates, the operator should contact LD immediately and
inform the matter and action according to their instructions.
9.7 SYNCHRONIZING TROLLEY

400KV Elappully PGCIL substation are taken into service.
9.8 FIRST AID
A first aid kit with artificial resuscitation kit is provided near the main
entrance of control room.
9.9 COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
1 Wave trap
Ensures that the Radio frequency carrier signals-either fed from
carrier equipments to HT line or that coming from the opposite station do not
enter power station equipments (Transformers, isolators, CBs etc.)The WT
consists of essentially a coil and being connected to main current circuit in HV
line, they are constructed to withstand short circuit currents.
2 Coupling capacitor
Serves as interlink element between high voltage line and low
voltage RF carrier equipments. It essentially offers very high impedance of
power frequency and allows RF carrier signals to pass through it to the LMU .If
CVT is provided instead of PT, it serves the purpose of coupling capacitor.
3 Line matching unit
The LMU consists essentially of an impedance transformer, the primary
and secondary winding of which are insulated from each other to withstand a
voltage of 10kV .It serves to match characteristic impedance of coaxial
cable(125 ohm ) to that of HV line(600 ohm)

11
220kV SUBSTATION SHORNUR OPERATING MANUAL

4 Drainage coil
Serves to ground 50Hz leakage current through CC to earth ,
thus preventing accumulation of charge on the LV side of capacitor, which
would result in setting of LA .The coil offers high impedance to the RF
signals . The protective devices serves to protect PLCC equipments &
personnel from danger through leakage of HV ie, short circuits or flash over
occurring on the coupling capacitor .Earth switch is kept open for normal
operating conditions and closed if any work to be done on the
communication equipment. It is to be ensured that the drainage coil is
properly earthed.
5 Coaxial Cable
Serves as an interconnecting cable between the LMU & PLCC set.
9.10 EARTHING
The terminology, grounding or earth means connecting the non-current
carrying parts of an equipment to the general mass of the earth to ensure that in
the event of fault, the parts in question cannot have higher potential than the
grounding grid.
The objective of connecting the non-electrical materials to earth can be
summarized as:-
To provide safety for operating personnel working in or near the station
by reducing step and touch potential occurring under normal or fault conditions
within safe limits.
To provide a low impedance to the ground of such capability so as to
handle the fault current as permitted by the over current protection system for
the duration of fault current without getting fire and without creating explosive
hazard to building or contents within the building. To aid circuit relaying for
clearing ground fault.
Mat earthing is used in 220Kv substation Shornur. The substation grounding
system comprises of a grid (earth mat) formed by a horizontal conductors. In
addition to such a grid below ground level, earthing spikes (electrodes) are
driven into the ground and are connected electrically to the earth grid,
equipment bodies, structures, neutrals etc. are connected to the station earthing
system by earthing strips
10. PROCEDURE FOR TAKING ALTERNATE AC SUPPLY
When LT supply from station auxiliary transformer is not available due to
any reason LT supply can be availed from
1. LT LINE PASSING NEAR THE COLONY
Procedure is:
1. Switch off 11KV station auxiliary feeder.

12

ON OLTC OUT OF STEP

Please put 'OLTC OPERATION SELECTOR' in the independent position
for all the three transformers and check whether remote independent operation
is possible. If not, go to transformer yard and local electrical operation may be
tried, if failed do mechanical tap changing by handle operation. And put all the
three transformers on the same tap position. If local electrical tap changing is
also not possible, check LT supply fuses to OLTC motor. For all other
conditions inform Concerned Engineer. Always leave a minimum of l0Sec.
Before next application of tap raise or lower signal to ‘TAP CHANGING IN
PROGRESS LAMP’ off. This is applicable for all tap changer operations.

ON LOW OIL LEVEL ALARM

Visually inspect oil level in the conservator and inform to concerned
Engineer and act as per his direction.
ON COOLING FAN TRIP
Check for LT supply to motor, if fuses are blown out, replace them and
reset.
4 11KV INCOMMER TRIPS:

Reset the alarms and note down the indications and time of tripping. If
the incomer trips in REF protection, 110 KV breaker of the corresponding
transformer also should have tripped and in that case the transformer should not
be test charged. Inform the matter to the station engineer. In other cases (E/F &
O/C) follow the instructions below:
Check whether any feeder has also tripped simultaneously. If so, isolate this
feeder & test charge the incomer. The isolated feeder can be declared faulty.
If no 11KV feeder has been tripped simultaneously with the incomer, switch off
all 11KV feeders except station services feeder & test charge the incomer. If
OK, the 11KV feeders can be test charged one by one. If the incomer trips when
any of the 11KV feeders are being test charged, it can be assumed that the
breaker/relay of this feeder failed to clear a fault. Isolate this feeder and test
charge the incomer again.
NOTE: In any case of incomer tripping if both incomers are coupled, it is better
to open the coupler before test charging in order to avoid the simultaneous
tripping of both incomers.

12.7 PROTECTION SIGNALLING OVER COMMUNICATION
This system is for transmitting an instantaneous trip signal from one
station to another station without time delay, thereby the successful reclosing of
the feeder is ensured.
Usual settings of the distance relay implies that the 1 st zone
instantaneous tripping is set for the 80% of the line from one end and for the 2 nd
zone, the tripping is set for the remaining 20% of the line plus 40% of the next
line with a time delay of 300-450 mSec. The 3 rd zone is set beyond that with
more time delay. The same thing applies for the distance relay in the other end
also. There fore the 1st zone instantaneous tripping is applicable for the middle
60% of the line from two ends. Usually reclosing facility is provided for 1 st
zone instantaneous tripping. For the 1st 20% of the line and 80-100% of the line
from one end, the tripping sequence is different at two ends, and then the
reclosing of the line will not be successful for a 1 st zone tripping and the line
may go into a lockout condition. A fault in the 1 st part of the line will be cleared
instantaneously by the distance relay in the 1 st station, where as the same fault
will be cleared by the distance relay in the 2nd station only after 300-

450mSec.There fore the fault current will be feeding for this much time from
the other end.
This difficulty is overcome by transmitting protection signal through
the PLCC system (Protection coupler/ (PC)) with proper interconnection with
the distance relay at both ends of the feeder.
The protection coupler senses the fault and analyses the condition
of starter relay and finally sent a valid trip to other end instantaneously, the
output of the PC will be an audio frequency signal. At the receiving end, the
protection coupler receives this AF signal through the communication network,
analyse the fault and monitor the condition of the starter relay and then give a
valid trip signal to the distance relay/master trip relay. All these signal
transmission process takes only 20-25msec of time. Tripping take place at the
both ends simultaneously. The reclosing of the feeder for the condition will be
successful.
LT Distribution system
For availing LT supply to the substation, 1nos.11kV/415V 250kVA
aux. transformers are installed near the control room. This transformer is
charged from station auxiliary feeders of the control room using 3core,
300sq.mm, Al, 11kV, XLPE cable.
12.8 2SHAR & 2SHMD CHECK SYNCHRONISING PROCEDURE
1. Check synchronisation in 2SHAR & 2SHMD feeders are put in service
through main II distance relays SEL 311C2 of the above feeders.
2. Now onwards the CLOSING shall be done only after selecting
either SYNC CHECK or BYEPASS option in the above relays.
3. If the feeder is to be check synchronised, push button PB3_SYN CHK is
to be pushed. Then LED 3 "SYN CHK ACTIVATED" will start flashing
for 5 minutes. During this 5 minutes period, if LED 4 "READY TO
SYNC" lights, the operator can close the TNC and the feeder will CLOSE
& SYNCHRONISED. An indication lamp "SYNC READY" is wired in
the control panel which is equivalent to LED 4. If LED 4 does not light,
the close pulse will not be sent to the breaker.
4. If the feeder is to be charged without sync check, push button
PB5_BYPASS is to be pushed. Then LED 5 BYPASS ACTIVATED will
start flashing for 5 minutes. During this 5 minute period, the operator can
close the CB without any check.
