Story IMAM ALI (A.S.) AND THE CANDLE:
Responsibility in Islam
A candle burnt by his side, as he sat down meticulously recording all
the revenue and the expenses of the treasury.
Just then Talha and Zubair appeared.
They aspired to some positions of authority in Imam Ali’s (A.S.) rule
and had come to strike a deal. If Imam Ali (A.S.) gave them a place of
distinction, they would in turn pledge their full support. Imam Ali (A.S.)
knew of this.
Just as they sat down, Imam Ali (A.S.) puts out the candle and lit
another one.
Talha and Zubair exchanged a glance of surprise and then one of
them said:
“O Ali, we have come on some important business. But why did you
extinguish the first candle?”
Imam Ali (A.S.) replied: “That was a candle bought of Treasury funds.
As long as I worked for the Treasury, I used it. Now you have come for
some personal work, so I use the candle bought of my personal fund.”
Talha and Zubair left him without saying another word.

ma Al-Masumah (S.A.), “Whoever performs the Ziyarah of ‘Fatima Ma-
sumah’ in Qum is like the person who has performed my Ziyarah.”
•Dhul-Qida is the first of three sacred months mentioned in the Holy
Qur’an. In this month, supplications made for fulfillment of crucial and
very necessary needs are heard and accepted.
•Did you know that Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) had some important
sayings regarding knowledge and some of them are “To acquire knowl-
edge is binding upon all Muslims, whether male or female.” And “The
ink of the scholar is more holy than the blood of the martyr.”
•Islam is an Arabic word meaning submission to God. As a religion Islam
calls for complete acceptance of and submission to the teachings and
guidance of God. The word has connotations of peace and wholeness.
It has the same root as “salam” - peace
•Did you know that both the Battles of El-Jamal and the Battle of Siffeen
took place in the 36th year of Hijra, just a few months separated from
each other and just a few months after the inauguration of Ali (AS) as
the Khalifa of Rasulullah (SA)? Now what does that indicate and point
to?!

She was Masumah (the Immaculate)
Sayeda Fatima bint Musa al-Kadhim (A.S.) was most pious, noble and
reverend lady. Like her holy grandmother Sayeda Fatima Zahra (S.A.) she
was always busy in performing Salat (prayers) and kept fast most of the
days. She was greatly respected and revered by her holy father Imam
Musa al-Kadhim (A.S.) and her elder brother Imam Ridha (A.S.). She be-
comes famous as Masumah (the Immaculate) during her lifetime. Imam
Ridha (A.S.) has said about Sayeda Fatima Masumah (S.A.) “Whoever
performs the Ziyarah of ‘Fatima Masumah’ in Qum is like the person who
has performed my Ziyarah”.
Karimat Ahlul Bayt (A.S.)
Sayeda Fatima Al-Masumah (S.A.) is also considered as Karimat Ah-
lul Bayt (A.S.) because she was very kind and gracious. Thousands of
miracles have been recorded at the holy grave of her and she fulfills the
rightful wishes of the believers and she miraculously heals incurable pa-
tients. Imam Jafar Sadiq (A.S.) has quoted “By the intercession of Fatima
Al-Masumah (S.A.) all my Shias will enter the paradise”.
Demise of Sayeda Masumah (S.A.)
In the year 200 A.H. a year after the forced migration of Imam Ridha
(A.S.) from Medina to Marw in Khurasan by the reigning Abbasid ca-
liph Mamun, Sayeda Masumah accompanied by her brothers left Medina
for Khurasan to meet her elder brother Imam Ridha (A.S.). When they
reached Saveh in central Iran they were attacked by the Abbasid army
and many of his brothers were mercilessly martyred. A lady servant on
the orders of the Abbasid commander poisoned Sayeda Masumah (S.A.)
during her stay in Saveh.
Sayeda Masumah (S.A.) became severely ill and in this condition she
migrated to Qum where the Shias of the city warmly welcomed her. The
effect of poisoning increased during her short stay in Qum and she at-
tained martyrdom on 10th of Rabi al-Thani 201 A.H. Sayeda Masumah
(S.A.) had great longing to meet her brother Imam Ridha (A.S.) but due
to her sudden death she could not meet him. Imam Ridha (A.S.) was
deeply grieved when he came to know about the demise of her beloved
sister Sayeda Fatima Masumah (S.A.).
